My favorite thing about Rose, is that you see her character development in reverse. Like she starts off as a selfish child who plays with people for fun, but then she sees the ramifications of her actions and the empire she's a part of, and decides to change. But becuase of the way we see this, it makes her look sooo much worse lol

Right! And watching this video, when Steven emphasized his ability to change, it reminded me that that's what Rose did too. She did change and grow and improve herself over time. It's just that, well, even at the end of her life she was still ... not great 😬

Yeah... it's interesting, because Rose started as being a very adored character. She was the amazing leader of the Crystal Gems who was kind and compassive and wanting nothing more but to leave on Earth with all of its life, fighting only to protect it. But then we get to know her past and all of her sins, to know how she used to be a spoiled brat that would do anything to get a colony of her own and got disappointed once she got it. Just like that, Rose became target of so much hate... all because of the things she did in the past and no longer defined her. It's interesting how a good development can make a hated character to get so much love, but when the reverse happens, a character that once was loved ends up getting hate.

One of the hardest things for me to remember when looking at the story of rose is that we learn it in reverse. She was a victim of abuse, she then became an abuser and had to unlearn all the toxic things about the way home world was. But she did grow and get better, it's just hard to see when we find out the bad stuff after the good.

I'm going to stand up for Rose here a little bit, by the time she had grown enough to realise what she had done to Spinnel was wrong, it was too late to go back for her. It's also why she never was able to return Pearl's feelings, she could never escape her past as Pink Daimond, and the artificial bond that was between them because of that. In the end, she could never make up for the things she did, the best she could do is invest her hope in her child. She is definately not without sin, but the complexity of the characters here is what makes Steven Universe so special.

Technically... she could still go back to get Spinel and fix her mistake. Don't forget that Rose could fix the galaxy warp pads to get to the garden. However... to bring Spinel back would mean to reveal her secret... Rose did say she didn't want to doubt herself about her decision, being why she faked her shattering and never looked back. If she brought Spinel (even if she convinced her as Rose Quartz), she would be the constant reminder of her life as Pink Diamond, the time when she was the spoiled brat that would make temper tamtrums whenever she didn't have her way. Not to mention that Spinel was written based on a doll that Rebecca herself had left on one place and then forgot about it.

@@rafaelmatos5851 Yeah, the fact that we have to resort to fan-theories that you have go through to try and justify Rose's abandonment of Spinel says it all really. The logic of the situation isn't as important as the emotion of it, which is devastating and very real. Rebecca Sugar has an amazing talent for evoking melancholic nostalgia. See also 'Remember you' from Adventure Time.

It makes me happy to see how much the both of you appreciate Steven Universe and Rebecca Sugar. You get that SU truly is a special show and that Rebecca is such a talented creator. I still find myself in disbelief sometimes that a show as good and as meaningful as SU exists. And I will always be grateful for that. In case you haven't seen it yet, I'd highly recommend checking out the Movie documentary. It's a ton of fun and gives us a peek behind the curtain of how SU was made. Seeing the cast and crew in action is a real treat and it's always nice to hear from Rebecca.

I think this often times goes unsaid or understood, but Blue was THE sharterer. She was the one who shattered the most gems and was known for it. The intro of the movie confirms this with her lines, and in the original show, Garnet mentions specifically that SHE is a shatterer. I can't explain enough how much I love her character design, character character, and character voice, especially. Ger voice is so amazingly beautiful. Out of all the Diamonds she grew the most, in my opinion, seeing as she no longer shatters for basically no reason and saw the error of her ways pretty much instantly. Her only issue at the end episodes of the original series was how she saw lower status gems and other life as beneath her. She accepted Steven for who he was. Even after he, a Diamond, fused with a lower life form, Connie the Human, she understood with a bit of explination. She was even mocking Garnet a few times, but she accepted them because Pink was back and cared about Garnet. She could have easily shattered them both on the spot due to their history, but she didn't. I think Blue grew the most as a Diamond, and I love her for it. Diamond favoritism is controversial in this community. Each Diamond has their fan base. You can find a version of the song Let Us Adore You that is only Blue Dianond and it is amazing.

Garnet didn't come back originally because both Sapphire and Ruby both lost their memories and were reset. Just because they each fused does not mean each recovered her memories respectively. That is probably obvious since you've now seen it, but I figured a comment wouldn't hurt. Her and Sapphire fused without memory, so naturally, Garnet had no memory either. It took more than that to fix them. Maybe if things worked out so the original pairing, Ruby saving Sapphire, worked out it might have recovered some memories and maybe all in the process, but since the opposite happened it makes sense it took more to remember.

You may have other shows lined up after Steven Universe / Future, but I'd recommend Hilda. To me it has Gravity Falls and Steven Universe elements to it; I feel you would both enjoy it, and we'd enjoy seeing you react to it.

you know, this movie was supposed to be way darker.....they were gonna have Spinel shattered by Steven (from what I heard) and apparently, it wasn't shown in the film but Spinel before she came to earth literally tried to shatter herself (again from what I heard)

As much as people are mad at Pink for leaving behind Spinel there can be a small argument for her perspective. For the gems everything is alive... Walls, combs, mirrors, etc... and they are very much often "things" to not be given a second thought and be "left behind". Though, I think she should've given Spinel to someone else or reset her.... not to lie and abandon her alone.

Good point about all the living 'things'! Also, like the Gals talked about: When you're in a toxic/manipulative situation or regime like Pink was, you don't see how bad it is (and what you're doing) because that's just the way it's always been for you. It was only after seeing the beauty of Earth (and other perspectives like Garnet) that Pink learned for herself the Diamonds were wrong. This led to falling in love with humans and eventually Greg, and the ultimate expression of her love: Steven. She still had flaws, tho, because that's realistic - forgetting Spinel? Pretty bad, but becoming Rose and fighting the war probably prevented her ever going back to the garden. The layers really speak to the quality of writing - that's why it's so good to re-watch and pick up on more things.
