The tragedy of Rose Quartz is that she never understood how important she was to other people. She never thought Spinel would actually stay, she never realized how much control she had over Pearl, she never thought the Diamonds would grieve her enough to try and get revenge, she never thought the Crystal Gems would struggle without her. She ruined lives because she didn't think people cared, and then she died never knowing how much she was loved. She's such a fascinating character!

Yup. I think what people struggle with understanding Pink Diamond’s story is that her journey wasn’t about gaining forgiveness, it was about gaining redemption. It wasn’t until she met Greg that she finally realized what her major flaw was: that she failed to see others as being people. She saw humans as akin to cute pets, she saw other gems as inferior to her and thus she underestimated their feelings, she thought the Diamonds disliked her and wouldn’t care if she was gone. Greg helped her realize that she was acting like a jerk this whole time, so she not only changed for the better, she decided to commit one major, final act of true empathy and redemption: give birth to a being that, unlike her, had the power to grow. Redemption is not the same thing as forgiveness. Redemption is about reforming and doing the right thing, regardless of if people forgive you or not. And it’s clear by this comment section that there are plenty of people who don’t forgive Rose. But that’s okay. Pink Diamond still redeemed herself in the end.

49:10 one small detail I like here, is how Amethyst checks with Greg & Steven first if they’re ok with her shapeshifting into Rose. She suggests it, but doesn’t immediately do it without consent from Greg & Steven. Considering how she did just the opposite to Greg back in Season 1 (when she was trying to manipulate him and get a reaction out of him as Rose, and probably traumatized him and Steven a great deal), it shows how far Amethyst has come and how she’s grown since then.

i just realized part of the reason spinel may have stayed and waited so long was because pink diamond commanded her to . we know diamond orders are very powerful ; pink ordered pearl to never speak the truth of her shattering , fake identity as rose , pearl couldn’t physically tell anyone until steven (with the same gem) found out through her memories . throughout the show they showed pearl clasping her mouth shut with her hand every time she tried to tell steven or even allude to the truth , sometimes even trying to pry her hand off her mouth . so i think spinel physically couldn’t move even if she wanted too until she saw the broadcast message and her emotions were so powerful that they broke the diamond command

​​@@camux223Speaking as someone who has experience with a less tolerable family members I don't think it's a matter of Steven being unable to forgive them as much as honest to God fear, the diamonds did terrifying things to him and even if he's forgiven them by trying to be kind, cordial and believe in their growth he has an aversion to them. It's only natural you'd be averse to someone who hurt you even if you don't personally hate them.

Neat details you might like to know -The diamonds harmonies in Let Us Adore You are reminiscent of 50’s style trios, very ‘mr sandman’ esque, to represent them being from a bygone age -spinel being rubberhose animated and singing swing music is a similar thing, she’s ‘outdated’ -you know how garnet never asks questions? Cotton candy garnet speaks in nothing *but* questions! -fusions are supposed to be a representation of the relationship between their components and their feelings about each other, hence why garnet is such a baddie. Steg looks so epic because both Greg and Steven believe that each other is the coolest guy in the universe which I love a lot -re: spinel being left in the garden, I genuinely believe that pink was just not mature enough to realize the impact her orders have on gems under her. I don’t think she really thought spinel would just sit there the whole time. She did something really hurtful and damaging, yeah, like that was super fcked up but large swathes of the fandom insisting that this makes her a Fundamentally Bad Person are willfully misinterpreting things. Remember, all her character development is being shown in reverse. -True Kinda Love was written by Chance the Rapper! A bunch of the songs in this movie were written by guest artists. And bonus, when Garnet shifts through her forms while reforming, you can see Ruby and Sapphire holding hands and dancing together for a few frames between every one ^-^ -that one line in the finale song is the first and only time Lars ever sings lol

i remember when it first came out some people saying they didn't like how the song in the beginning gave "clues" for how to get the gems back later, but honestly that's how musicals work? especially musicals for children? you get introduced to things in the beginning that make sense and help the ending later. like the overture how it uses musical themes from the piece to give you a lil intro to what's gonna be in the musical! i dunno, i liked how it gave it kinda old school classic theater produced musical vibes!

59:58 one of the most gut wrenching parts of this movie is the connotation of Spinel’s form change. Note that in the flashbacks of the “Drift Away” song, Spinel’s in her more immature form, but that flashback wasn’t even THAT long ago. She only went up to the hologram when Steven gave his speech hours before, at the beginning of the movie. She’d been standing in that exact spot in the garden for the duration of the whole gem war, and all 5 seasons, for 6,000 years. Spinel changed forms THAT quick, presumably because the pain from Pink’s betrayal caused her to poof-“die”-of heartache on the spot. Some theorized she poofed at 1:00:05, depicted by her form dissipating in that memory. And I mean, it makes some sense, because people can experience heart attacks from betrayal, or being scared, or learning some horrid fate of a loved one. And how serendipitous is it that Spinel’s gem…is shaped like a heart…and only after the betrayal does it become inverted…betrayed by her treasured friend. So yeah, Spinel poofed from the gem equivalent of a heart attack, and her new physical form has permanent tear streaks because of how much grief that revelation put her through 😢

A thing about Pink Diamond is that she never thought how much she meant to people, she always thought people wouldn´t miss her because she felt worthless, given her abuse from the other diamonds. So please mind this before judging her, of course she did a lot of wrong things and she abused a lot of people but she was also abused herself, probably for milennia, and she wasn´t able to cure that trauma placed upon herself.

Call me heartless or whatever, but so what if she was abused herself? Like, yeah it's terrible that the other Diamonds abused her, but that doesn't mean that anything that Pink Diamond did was okay. She literally abandoned someone because she felt that she was being inconvenienced. She caused her own "friends" (were they even really her friends when she couldn't even be truthful to them?) mental anguish. She deliberately tricked her subjects into killing each other and she physically abused others when she didn't get what she wanted. She brought chaos into the world with the deftest of hands and even when she saw firsthand how she was hurting people, she didn’t stop. And you know why she didn't stop? Because she only cared about herself. The other Diamonds may have been fascists, but Pink was a hypocritical one. And you know what? After rewatching bits of the show, specifically parts that show Pink's past, it seems to me like the abuse Pink went through was really the other Diamonds disciplining her. Even though the other Diamonds might have spent thousands of years looking at Pink as being their lesser, younger sister who was never going to be properly equipped to manage her own colonies, they all loved her. Hell, they nuclear bombed an entire planet when they believed that she was shattered. Not to mention how offended Yellow was when she was accused by that lawyer gem of shattering her own sister. At least the other Diamonds are making attempts at being better. Pink did no such thing. She just hid and lied and then left everyone else, her "friends" and her own son, to deal with the fallout of her actions. Yes, her backstory is somewhat sympathetic, but that still doesn't and shouldn't justify her actions. If the other Diamonds can't be forgiven, then neither should Pink.

She abandoned Spinel, yes, but because she thought Spinel would get bored after like 5 minutes and leave. She didn't tell her friends the truth, because she felt it would ruin the message of what they were fighting for. I mean, can you imagine how much hope people would lose in the rebellion if they realized their leader was a Diamond? Also, other than Bismuth, I wouldn't call anything she did to the Crystal Gems "mental anguish". Her friends grieved her when she died. She didn't cause that, and it's also not a bad thing to have people grieve you. She also specifically didn't trick her subjects into killing each other, that's the whole point of her bubbling Bismuth was so that no one would have to die. And yes, she physically abused people 8000 years ago. And then she spent 8000 years working to be a better person. Do you know the characters of Peridot and Lapis? The ones that hurt people, and then worked to redeem themselves? Why is it ok when Peridot beats up Steven, or when Lapis destroys 70% of Earth and beats up the Crystal Gems, but not Rose? I'm not saying it's ok what she did, but I'm saying that's how redemption arcs work! And what was she supposed to "stop"? The war? Because she tried that. She tried to not genocide all organic life, she tried to make it no longer illegal to be queer or disabled in her society. She tried, and it didn't work, because she held no power. So yes, she continued a civil war. There was nothing else she could do. Also, reread what you wrote. You just really said that it's ok for her family to abuse her because it's discipline? It's ok for Blue Diamond to beat her up and for Yellow Diamond to lock her in a tower for years (if not centuries) at a time as she slowly starves without sunlight? Most of what she was being "disciplined" for was likely just being a child or being kind. Remember, Rose Quartz is canonically the only person who has ever said thank you to the Pebbles. Not even Pearl thought they mattered. But the Pebbles recognize her as a kind and loving person, and the only person who things they should be allowed to show their faces and be seen as people. Also, just because the Diamonds loved her, doesn't mean they didn't abuse her. Here's a fun fact, most abusers love their victims. As for " At least the other Diamonds are making attempts at being better. Pink did no such thing.", that's objectively untrue. She was an abusive bratty dictator, and the moment she realized how much she was hurting the people around her (particularly Pink Pearl/Volleyball), she tried to be better. She spent 2000 years trying to learn to be a kind and mature person. Then, the moment she was given a chance to escape the indoctrination of her family and actually interact with organic life, fusions, and off-colors, she spent the next 1000 years fighting a war that would benefit everyone except her, and doing her best to avoid casualties to the point that shattering in the war was unheard of. Then, she realized the only way to protect her friend was to metaphorically kill her privileged lifestyle, then she spent 5000 years happily roughing it with her best friends:a former slave, a queer relationship, a disabled person, and an organic lifeform that she fell in love with. And then she died in childbirth. Rose Quartz was a selfish, cowardly person. Bismuth, Spinel, Pearl, and Pink Pearl went through more pain than anyone ever should. But she spent 8000 years redeeming herself and trying to fight for the rights of marginalized communities. The tragedy of Rose is not a story of a horrible person that everyone loved. It's the story of someone who was loved and deified by everyone around them, who never realized how much she was loved. She never realized that her Pearls were hurting so much by staying by her side. She never realized Spinel cared enough about her not to get bored and leave. She never realized Bismuth cared enough about her and her message to cross so many moral boundaries for it. She never realized the other Diamonds loved her at all, much less enough to retaliate like that. She was a terrible person, and she had a redemption arc that we saw in reverse. She was bad, but everything you said was a bad faith argument. Sorry if I sounded at all rude or condescending in this. I didn't mean to, I'm just bad with getting my tone across online.

​@simonsonian8977 In my recent fyp, I've seen this review of someone tearing down Lily Orchard's SU movie review and one thing that stuck out to me was this. She described Pink's situation as, "When a heavily conservative family has an autistic/adhd child that they don't know what to do with other than baby her and get mad when she can't be normal." That fits so well with Rose and it kind of hurts cause media does display autistic people like that, someone to baby and get mad when they don't understand things. Like, Pink was so babied by the Diamonds, she thought scaring the Diamonds away from Earth would fix things. Pink was so babied, that when it was time for her colony, she overcompisated and thought, I don't need these childish friends or toys anymore, I'm grown enough to do my thing. It's like she was more of a teenager who thinks she's too cool and grown but she was still simply not experienced enough until she grew up more during the war.

Spinel actually knows Steven and rose aren’t the same, drift away actual confirms it when it says “survived by her son” and spinel only referring to him as Steven. that trauma from abandonment really takes over towards the end when she think Steven was just using her for the drill. Basically she knew Steven wasn’t pink and just wanted to take her anger out on those pink abandoned her for. She hates Steven after removing the drill because he went on a whole talk about finding a friend who treats you better, then essentially makes it sound like he only wanted her for the drill. Spinels trust issues really bubble up when she sees the rejuvenator and combines it with him saying they can all “forget about what happened”.

Love this show and how it tackles so many mental health issues. From codependent relationships to romantic entanglements encouraged for the wrong reasons. It can be argued that Spinnel, in this movie, is described as dealing with borderline personality disorder (BPD), and it's honestly a very, sadly, accurate depiction of it

Not a fan of the show past Season 2 - but as someone diagnosed with BPD myself, Spinel's one of my favorite examples of it in media. Three other favorite examples of mine are Shinji and Asuka from Evangelion (Shinji leaning more towards Quiet BPD, same as me, and Asuka leaning more towards Impulsive BPD), and Jinx from Arcane. Edit: Also, Sputnik brilliantly mentioned Pearl (at 1:04:19), who I forgot is another one of my favorite BPD-coded characters. She might actually be my favorite out of all of them.

Maybe not like a full on AI or anything, but theres some program or algorithm that analyzes the music and tries to isolate one specific part of it, in this case the vocals. You can hear scraps of the other audio if you strain your ear, although there are other isolations out there of other stuff that are of lower quality ergo less of a clean cut. Mainly trailer music, though that’s just because of sample bias on my end lol.

Depressing facts: Spinel's gem turning upside down is a metaphor of suicide, I think Rebecca said this (correct me if I'm wrong). Throughout season 1 to 5, Spinel was just standing there in the garden waiting for Pink. The reason Pink left Spinel was because she thought Spinel made her look "childish", Pink getting her first planet made her want to prove to the other diamonds that she's mature enough to run a colony so she cut out her "play toy" so that her image can be taken seriously.

An artist named Gallant wrote the concept/demo of the finale song for this movie, and it was rewritten to fit the theme of the ending of the movie. BUT they included Gallant's demo recording of the finale song on the deluxe edition of the OST and it makes me cry 😭 "--my life, unlike this story, isn't done" kills me every time.

When the movie came out, a lot of people criticized it for many reasons, and while I agree with the main issues (aka how badly the injector plot was handled--which was basically smth CN asked to raise the stakes or smth), I think it was overall pretty good. Not to mention that after SUF came out, it really put the movie into perspective, as the perfect transition between the main series and SUF. The movie really introduced Steven's issues (or rather they finally catching up to him). That scene when Steven is with Lion going after Spinel and goes "why do things have to change?" -- while he does have a realization in the climax (literally the song title, best song IMO), this is still quite a big deal later on that he is still struggling with (I don't think this is much of a spoiler, so should be ok?) [on a side note, every time I rewatch pool hoping I cry a little in agony at the conversation Steven and Dewie have at the end about change] Also hot take about Steven's 'new' powers. The thing about making other people float *may* be a Mr multiverse only thing, but that's open to debate. Still, the static floating and the geometric bubble are both things we first saw in 'Change your mind' from pink steven, and I find it really cool how regular Steven now has a better control over those things (while other powers we saw mayy still need some training.....................)
