I love how every serious musician makes fun of Green Day.

I know EXACTLY what you mean, man. I'd love just to have a conversation with Steven just to listen to his ideas. He's analytical in the most interesting way possible. All of his projects are brilliant!

I really wish people in this generation would be more explorative rather than just being concealed in there homes with their video games or bullshit television. Thank goodness I found Porcupine tree. None of their music ever gets old. It's incredible! PT FTW!

I agree with you pastryhat. Bands nowadays like greenday, fall out boy, etc. are just mere shadow in comparison to the beatles, pink floyd, the rolling stones, etc.

@ajd626 I forgot I made this comment. No, I don't want punk bands to return. Punk led to a decrease in experimentation that led to reducing rock music to the level of artifice and image. I was commenting on the hypocrisy of artists who call themselves "punk", yet have deviated from their predecessors. I'd still argue that a lot of it is watered down, and I'd argue that experimental music is also "direct and from the gut". Also, I don't think experimental music was ever mainstream, per se.

zeppelin8 Ehh not sure what exactly you mean by punk there. Because I can pull out some legendary and game changing and influential bands who were partially punk like The Velvet Underground. Then there's the Post-Punk/Gothic Rock pioneers Joy Division. Many great art rock and avant-punk bands like Television, The Stooges. You know punk doesn't only mean the typical Sex Pistols.

Thanks, harmony. I find also that Porcupine Tree is more rebellious than the hardcore bands, because PT explores unchartered territory. Whereas bands from the 60's/70's rebelled against the socially conservative conditions of their isolated suburban upbringings and promoted free love and creativity, PT rebels against the apathy/superficiality that has consumed our generation. Either way, this type of rebellion will lead to our generation's musical/cultural Renaissance :)

Steven Wilson dissing artists since forever lmao. What a class act haha.

@zeppelin8 Yeah I do agree with you with regard to the bands who are like a watered down version of punk. I never noticed it til I watched this programme about Indie rock. In the beginning, it was genuinely revolutionary but then it became so popular that many imitative bands sprang up which sounded the same but lacked that genuine sense of rebellion.

Sorry, luv! Correction: I know EXACTLY what you mean, girl.*** And yes, we do share an equilibrium of the minds :) Here's to Porcupine Tree!

@zeppelin8 I take issue with one thing you said. You seem to want punkish bands to return but, remember, it was punk that 'killed' the experimental rock music of the seventies which Steven Wilson is so fond of. Like it or not, there is a huge audience out there who like simple pop music, not because it's dumbed down but because it is direct and from the gut. If experimental music became mainstream again, it would no doubt become overblown again like in the mid-to-late seventies.

so, as i get it, we are in harmony in our ideas and thoughts about Steven. Just one thing - I'm not a MAN (male), actually I'm a girl. :)))))))))))))))

Steven Wilson makes some good points but his arguments are only relevant to the mainstream genres of music- pop, rock, and hip hop- in my opinion (it may be true that our generation will never reclaim those genres). I think many focus on these genres but make overarching statements about how modern music sucks (not accusing Wilson of this) have to open their mind to the newer genres. Boards of Canada, Bon Iver, Bonobo, Massive Attack, Olafur Arnalds, Sigur Ros, Sufjan Stevens are a few examples.

absolutely agree, particularly as for "hardcore idiots"... well said.

I disagree with JohnyVirgil. Today's mainstream music is extremely watered down. It's a damn trend. The only bands I find worth listening to are in the underground: Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Meshuggah, ambient, drone, Radiohead (not underground, but good), Mastodon. Where are the punks that are burning flags and promoting anarchist values? All I see are the "hardcore" idiots with the hair combed over one eye and the tight pants. Nothing inspiring r thought provoking. Just iPod candy.
