I lived in Stevenage since 1990 all i know town square still the same i lived by the hyde shops

It was a great place to grow up in the 50s and 60s. I visited for the first time since 1966 in 2016. My... was I shocked. Where there had once been open grass space it was overgrown with brush, weeds and garbage. The Town Center that had been so clean and modern in the 60s was run-down and dirty. Too bad.

The same. I lived next to St. Nicholas church, and went to Alleynes. Fond memories, I took my wife and family to visit my childhood home and town. Mistake, it had changed so much. Fortunately, I was able to put it all out of my mind. Never will go back, let pleasant memories rest.

And the people who designed the town would likely be turning in their graves. Their vision of a prosperous town way into the 21st century is sadly misplaced. High rise flats being thrown up in our town center where all the independent shop keepers have disappeared thanks to some morons hiking rents up astronomically after the Development Corporation leases rant out - resulting in us now having a poor town center. Marks & Spencer , BHS , Littlewoods , CO-OP , Sainsbury's , C&A and dozens of other smaller retailers have gone. The council can't sell leases at the going rate so they are resorting to selling short term cheaper leases to charity shops and phone shops. The council gave planning permission for Park Place to be developed - I don't know how many apartments have been sold but I do know the majority of the shops are still empty two years after they were finished.I have lived here 55 years and I can't believe my eyes when I see what they are doing.

Stevenage used to be a wonderful place. Badly managed now where everything done seems half a job.

I agree, I lived there from 1962 - 2005, first it was allowed to get run down, then mass building of houses and apartments all over, but the shopping area really lacking. I hate the place now 😢

@@sue.Hoo123 really is a shame Sue. They are leaving sports fields unmanaged which will be used as an excuse to build housing estates. Unfortunately run by a council with no pride.

@@johnwaldock3449 it used to be so green when I was growing up, as kids we used to cycle to the swimming pool and all around, we played in woods and fields that have been built on now. I only visit to see my brother who still lives there, but it just seems full of houses/apartments too close together and full of fast food places, it’s a disaster for mental and physical health
