Lowest bird shot (next to dust) compared to one of the highest buckshot... Not a fair comparison. That stuff Is called snake or rat shot for a reason. No one should defend their home with ratshot. Why not FF birdshot or Magnum birshot compared to #4 or #1 buck? There is birdshot that stays together that'll punch a fist sized hole through you with the force of a slug at 5-8 yards. 00buck has proven to over penetrate so some people in certain situations would prefer something less powerful; And that something would be more than adequate to get the job done. I wouldn't even recommend the most powerful birdshot if you live in close quarters because it will over penetrate as well. Especially with some choke. There is a happy medium for everyone but the fact remains the same: there is birdshot that is absolutely perfect for home defense, more perfect than buck depending on your situation.

People always tend to say "bird shot" like it's all the same thing. But there's so many different loads and shot sizes that are classified as bird shot. It's not only about the shot size but also about the shot weight and the powder load. I have these Rottweil crow loads 34 grams of 2.9mm shot, and they kick like hell. I've only ever shot at steel plates with those, but by how these rounds absolutely smash heavy plates at 10-15 meters, I wouldn't want to be hit with them even at 20 meters. And these crow loads aren't even the strongest bird shot out there.

@@maximilianmustermann5763 exactly, Not all birdshot is the same. High brass heavy field loads are more than enough for home defense especially when you get into the steel shot, F and FF. Even #6 shot with a 1 3/8ths load and high brass is going to poke a hole possibly all the way through you, especially with a little bit of choke. I won't use buckshot or the heaviest birdshot shell for home defense where I live now, I can injure or fatally wound my neighbors.

Somebody who.understands ballistics....I have a question! When they say over-penetration, they mean a bullet that continues through the body into something or someone else potentially? Theyre looking for something that goes in, does damage and stays in?

Yes. It over-penetrates whatever you are shooting at. Hunters usually want some overpenetration because it will result in a better blood trail, so if the animal runs away they're easier to find. But of course they can (or should!) always look for a good backstop before shooting. But the police or someone just defending themselves obviously don't want over penetration because other people might be hit with the stray bullet. The nightmare scenario would be a bullet over penetrates an intruder, goes through a wall and hits your kid in the next room.

Yup, you got it. Ideal result is the bullet penetrates deep enough to hit vital organs but doesn’t exit the target. You want it to transfer all the energy possible into the target. This is the idea behind most defensive rounds (e.g. hollow points). You should always be aware of what’s beyond your target in a self defense shooting situation - you’re responsible for every round you send - but in real life there could be unpredictable circumstances or you may not have that luxury. So reducing the risk of hurting innocent people by not having over penetration is definitely a good thing to keep in mind when selecting your gun and ammo.

Yes, that’s exactly what they mean by over penetration but for self-defense you don’t want over penetration because you are responsible for that bullet if you hit somebody else. For hunting or for target shooting doesn’t really matter

The 9mm caliber is the most popular self defense pistol round, right? I'd like to see comparisons between both different guns and different 9mm rounds. For a given round, how does it perform in a Glock 17 vs 19 vs 26, Walther PDP vs PPK, Ruger, Springfield, S&W, etc. for ball target rounds, JHP rounds, P+, P++, etc. This would be a good and interesting evaluation. Then do the same thing with a sweater and winter jacket in front of the gel. Please.

The only worthwhile thing to test is different ammo brand/bullets and different barrel lengths. The brand of the pistol doesn’t make a difference unless they have a radically different rifling profile.

There are already tons of videos doing that. Just search 9mm (specific bullet your looking for or just hollow point) ballistics gel. The best two are the 124gr speer gold dot and federal HST in the P+ variety. Both have been tested extensively by both gov and civ, are used by police and feds, and have a great real world track record in shootings.

Let me break it down for a few people because he hasn't said it yet as I'm watching this video the government uses FMJ because of the Geneva convention when you get shot with a full metal jacket your survival ratio is a lot higher....that's why it's against the law for the military to use soft points are hollow point ammunitions.. there's so much the stuff that this guy is missing for example if you get in a firefight with someone wearing armor a hollow-point is pretty much an effective.. but if you're in an everyday situation trying to protect yourself from a crazy person a hollow-point will stop them quicker as long as they're not wearing body armor

Might just be because I'm fat, but I can confirm birdshot is worthless against somebody. I was accidently shot and it stung but it didn't even leave welts. I think somebody else got hit by the ricochet off me but I'm not sure

I think it depends on the kind of bird shot. There's some rather strong hunting loads that I definitely wouldn't want to be hit with. It's not only about shot size, they can also differ a lot in shot weight and powder load.

I mention it because across the various other guntube channels, back when I started getting into firearms, there's quite a bit of everything everywhere. This series simplifies a lot of those things and covers things like basic firearm function, safety, the myths/truths, basic maintenance and stuff like that. They basically cover everything everyone needs to know in one 5 episode series which is pretty nice without having to sift through hours upon hours of videos, especially when some channels have a difference in opinion when it comes firearms in general.
