This is helpful to know how to open this thing up. I live in an area with lots of poplars, so the unit gets clogged up pretty bad. I'll be making cleaning a yearly routine from here on out.

Steven it's always nice to see someone do the job like it was intended to be done. That XL1200 was the precursor to what you have today from Trane. It still comes down to the way it is installed no manufacturer can overcome that.

I never reach into a unit a pull the debris out of a unit. Good way to get Needle Stuck, from some Ah*l* Junkies, using it as a needle deposit. I made an Auxiliary Vacuum Buckets out of a Seven Gallon Bucket. Big hose from my Wet/Dry goes on one port, I made a smaller port, for a smaller vac hose.

Amazing those condensers were still working? Pine needle stuff!!!! That stuff also packs itself under roof shingles. My neighbor had 2 trees which had the finger long needles and they use to blow onto my roof. The neighbor on the other side had a pine tree with the short needles, same story. All those trees are now gone for years and one neighbor is dead and gone as well! I have the same roof but it is really old now, but still watertight.

My trane 1200xl kept on tripping the breaker and i spent $500 on two different opinions of a new outdoor unit and a new capacitor. After watching this video i gathered enough confidence to take it apart and clean it. I spent 3 hours and 3 cans of coil cleaner but i gotta say that the time made a difference, i can actually hear the compressor running different now, no tripping so far.

milfhunterX wel; now it can breath and condense the refrigerant like it designed to .very important to keep them clean .now you can hose it off once a year from the outside with grates on will help it stay clean

milfhunterx, can you walk me through step by step on getting the top off the Xl 1200? I have an XL 1400 looks exactly the same. I don't want to break the plastic by using to much force or not knowing which side is best to start to unclip those clips.
@kma56996 жыл бұрын
TheGhettoLobster Glad I didn't try that as mine have these little 1inch rectangular plastic covers at each angled corner of the Weatherguard top. Under the 4 covers are 4 hex screws. Had I yanks on the top as was stated I would have ruined and broken the plastic Weatherguard top. Thanks for almost ruining my AC unit. These is NO clips that hold this top on at ALL.
@kma56996 жыл бұрын
@@TheGhettoLobster Mine looks exactly the same but apparently there are several different types of weather guard tops over the years. Not sure when they first were available bit I have seen a pic of one from 1994. Mine is 2001. They look the same. The current weather guard tops are more rounded and don't have the angled corners. But to give bad advice I'd inexcusable, and then to patronize by saying get it fixed by a technician is a joke Glad I didn't listen to you're incorrect advice. I got my unit taken care of but not by your wrong advice. Think twice before giving wrong bs advice dude

Our neighbors who live about 100 yards from us have this unit and it makes a hollow humming sound that keeps me up at night. It sounds fine when we are standing next to the unit but when we walk away we can hear it sounds like a far away car horn. We can’t figure out what it is 😣

Help...please. A little bird somehow got pulled into the blades of my 2013 Trane and what is left of her is at the bottom of the unit. Mine is quite clean: just a few leaves. Is there way to get to the bottom without removing the top and all the sides? Many thanks.
@BrodyMcCain5 жыл бұрын
It sure does look a heck of a lot better, mine is done as of a few days ago. I'm checking for dirt build-up now. My unit runs but doesn't cool. No cold air, only fan air. Or at least that's what it seems. I've lowered the temperature lower to see if the cold air would come on but it didn't.
@kma56996 жыл бұрын
This XL 1200 looks just like my XL 1400. You mention the top is held on by spring clips and I was hoping the removal procedure would have been shown. Any tricks to unlatching them from the spring clips? The plastic looks rather brittle and last thing I want to do is break the plastic shroud. Is there a step by step you could provide? Thanks, love your videos!

Since this type of air conditioner *(Trane XL1200)* is the same type I have at my house, one thing I want to ask is that if I take the dark gray cover off (that is, the angled louvered grill with the nametags in each corner), would the efficiency and lifespan be the same, or would it be altered, even though removing the top cover would make it look like a modified, "makeshift" *XE1200* (with the lower profile design and straight vertical discharge)?

Steve, 1st Off - Great Videos ! I have watch just about all of your HVAC . I responsibility of maintenance of 21 Goodman Package Units 10 - 15 Ton. Today I had my Phase II Compressor Short to Ground. Are you familiar with how I would separate this compressor from my Phase I so I can keep the unit in service until I replace my larger Phase II Compressor ?
@stevenlavimoniere10 жыл бұрын
do you mean 2 stage condenser ??? single and second stage ?? its eather single phase or 3 phase
@mikenye1710 жыл бұрын
steven lavimoniere 3 phase / Maybe I am describing the Compressors incorrect / 15 Ton Unit (3) Condenser Fans - 2 Compressors in the Air Conditioning Cabinet . So it's probably 1st Stage Compressor and the Larger Compressor with the Sight Glass would be considered 2nd Stage Compressor. Could I separate at Contractor ? or Thermostat Control Bar ?

My parents have this unit (Trane XL 1200) on their house. It's about 21 years old. It just recently started freezing up, so I checked the filter, cleaned the condensing unit with plain water, and had a guy I know check the freon (I'm not a/c tech). It's pretty dang low on freon, so apparently there is a leak somewhere, which might be on the evaporator coil I guess. This guy tells me I should buy a whole new unit. I guess he means indoor and outdoor? Seems extreme to me, but it is an old unit. Any suggestions? Also, have you used this new replacement for R-22, called Ecofreeze EF-22a? It's supposed to be non-harmful to the ozone, and more efficient than normal R-22 (not to mention a hell of a lot cheaper). I was thinking about charging with that until I can figure out what I'm gonna do.
