In the late 1960’s, my best friend and I went to Hamilton, Montana (just south of Stevensville) to spend a week visiting her aunt Helen Carruthers who was the Ravalli County Clerk. I have to say, that the Bitterroot Valley is absolutely beautiful and one of my favorite places! Aunt Helen took us to Stevensville to see the first Jesuit mission in Montana. I believe it was built in 1840. Then, she explained that the first vaccine to Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever was developed there. The researchers would drag a white sheet through the woods to collect ticks (the cause of the disease). Evidently, ticks can’t resist the color white and would jump on the sheet. They used these collected ticks to make the vaccine. I’ve never worn white in the woods since!

That's a great story. And also, a bit of good advice on how to dress that I'll keep in mind when I go out walking in the countryside.....NO WHITE!
