Very good comments. I lived in Missoula for a number of years from the 70s to the 90s. When I first moved there, teepee burners would make the air quality very bad every winter, especially in December since for some reason the air is stagnant at that time. In late January it would get stormier and blow the smoke out. We didn't have so much of a problem with fire as they seem to have now, although the fire up Pattee Canyon (1800 acres) happened while I was there. The medical situation seems to have changed too. When I was there, Missoula was such a center for medical professionals that the service was far more and better than you would expect for a city that size. It's a much bigger place now, though and looks like the medical establishment isn't keeping up. I was in Missoula this past summer visiting friends and I couldn't believe it. Reserve St. is now wall-to-wall commercial. I wonder what the population is now? Missoula was a very fun place to be in the 70s, when I went to college there. I suppose it's much more businesslike and impersonal now. But still a nice place.

" teepee burners?" Really dude ?
@buzzyhardwood29494 ай бұрын
Yeah dude. That’s what they are called. Seems insane to burn a resource but smaller sawmills often did that. I saw a LOT of them in redwood country back in the 70s. Don’t know the situation now. As for Reserve Street: ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Unreal traffic jams any time I’ve gone to “Zoo” town. Reminds me of SoCal traffic. Left SoCal over 50 years ago and never looked back. Missoula grew like mad in the 90s onward from what I can tell and the city/county planners were caught completely unaware of the tidal wave that was coming. Seeing the same here in Helena where I reside now. You didn’t mention the cost of housing in Missoula😢. Cheaper for one of my family to buy a home in Polson and then commute daily to U of M than to try and rent anything near town. Buy a home for young Zoomers? Ain’t gonna happen in Missoula, or most of Montana for that matter.

I have lived in her for over 30 years and this is a very accurate review. I would add the lack of sunshine. Being a local I didn't realize this is a problem for most people. But a recent transplant keeps me informed about how many days it has been since Missoula had a sunny day. In the winter, you will be lucky to have one sunny day a week. Also consider the poor job market, high cost of living, high housing costs, high income taxes, high property taxes, lack of private school options, and very liberal public schools.

Winter was fine from Oct-June, fewer people, and traffic, but no sun most of the year (Zoloft Zone), worst air quality in the lower 48, too much sports at U of M, I still have never been to the mall, sorry to hear medical care has declined. I did gigs as a property surveyor around Hamilton in 1996. I just returned for the first time earlier this year and am still in shock & horror how bad the Bitterroot is now with traffic and crowding. I still enjoy visiting and working in Lolo, but the traffic noise off of 93 is 24-7. Sidney, Terry, and Lewistown are the cutting edge places to move to, but I don't live there. Not saying where I live, but bonus is still no cell phone area. Water quality sucks naturally for most of the state.

I’ve lived and visited many of the states in the Rocky Mountain corridor and the SW and I made assumptions about Montana based on these states and I was wrong. My brother moved there after retiring from military (Navy Seal). Note: many of those extreme military type retire there. The Hunting, skiing, fishing, isolation, wilderness, etc. and (in the past) low land and housing cost are an attraction to that population. We’d visit him often and even bought some property around Seeley Lake. But we found that visiting and living are two entirely different things. Despite the state having a Spanish name Montana = Mountains, unlike NM, CO, AZ diversity is non- existent. The summer, when we visited…gorgeous, but when we visited late September, found that summer went directly into Winter…no long lovely fall days like in Santa Fe. Luckily my brother married a local Missoulan and has military buddies. He loves it there. I would have a hard time making friends. Another factor, not mentioned, is traveling to Missoula. From ABQ, I can get to CA, AZ, and even WA within a couple of hours, direct and cheap . Flying and driving is always a challenge to Montana. People are lovely. Love my sister in law, but think twice about moving there and the type of person that you are. If you are considering moving to Alaska, try Missoula first. If it bothers you don’t even think about our 50th state. Montana is a good halfway mark experience.

Lived in MT my first 35 years, most in Missoula, moved to ND for grad school, I get harrassed on occasion when I come visit. Had somebody harrass me for the way I parked. Lol. (I have ND plates). Missoula and Montana in general is very rural, if you’re expecting conveniences that larger cities have, then yes- do not move here. Most of the problem that locals have with newbies is them trying to change the surroundings and ways to suit them personally. Imagine the ugly American scenario and you may understand it. I did live in Missoula for a short time and most people I met were from out of state but were nice people, with the exception of the occasional goober. That last comment about noisy trucks must mean you’re on Reserve Street a lot making calls😂😂😂

The reason the people out of town don’t like most of the people in Missoula is because of the college and the liberal people, or liberal ideas the colleges and professors bring. The vast majority of ranchers/farmers are very conservative people. They don’t want the government involved in their lives. Not even a little bit. The city of Missoula is not. Most of the ranchers have been on their land, or ranched / farmed for generations. They don’t want or like liberal policies being put in place because of the large voting blocks in bigger cities. Ie; Missoula.

In Missoula, there are all kind of people with different ideas and opinions. That’s the way Missoula should be. It’s been taken over by a Cult…. Missoula folks don’t want this change. Changing too much too quickly and just jamming places in everywhere they can. It was an idyllic place to grow up a place where you didn’t have to lock your door even at night.. where everyone got along didn’t know who anybody was voting for because it was private. We were all still friends. We played together and just enjoyed this town. Kids nowadays can enjoy that because it’s gone due to incoming people moving here raising the taxes on houses. We have to provide more services for more people with less funds here I hope a solution can be found. Most of us here in Missoula have nowhere else to go, but we have to sit here and take all these prize raises on apartments and houses. it’s hurtful. I’m just glad my folks aren’t around to witness all this crap. It’s very very sad.

I might add, the very best portrayal of life in Montana down to the scene, is the movie, “The Power of the Dog” which nobody seems to have seen in Montana. Haha. Take your Montana. No body wants it. Didn’t care to mention why locals are so unwelcoming and mad at transplants? How about the sudden, mass migration of exurban transplants who came in and outcompeted locals for housing and goods using the economies of the places they’re from, resulting in a quadrupling to ten-tupling house prices? How about the political colonialism, where transplants moved in mass and overran local and state politics, and helped to increase taxes and drive a cultural conversion, quickly and without the consent of locals? Locals throughout the West are incensed because of this. We didn’t want to live like the transplants, we didn’t want to live with them, and we didn’t want what they wanted. It’s intranational colonialism. Locals say NO, transplant forces a YES. 👎👎
