I setup my Eheim eXperience 150 following the recommendations of Pondguru. I put Eheim Mech at the bottom of the canister and a coarse sponge and a filter pad in the first tray. Most of the dirt is catched by the Eheim Mech. The fine filter pad and the bio media is pretty clean. But I clean my canister every other month. I don't wait until everything is clogged

I would suggest putting the ceramic noodles first so that some of the chunkier particles get slowed down/trapped before it hits the blue filter.

Steve, Just a note on how I set up my 2217. At the bottom I use the filter media with the holes as they direct the incoming water. Then the course pad (sometimes two). Then Pinky, and BioHome filter media. All works GREAT !! Have had trouble with the clips, just bend them back and all is well.Sent you the size of the 5' pinky, it is 24" wide !!!! Way more pads. :0) Woody, Woody's Discus (FB)

I am planning to load 406 as follows, bio-foam in the bottom tray, bio-max bio rings, seachem pond matrix, poly-fil with purigen on top.. let me know your thoughts.

Great video Steve. I'm shopping for a canister filter for a smaller tank. Noise level and not leaking of course are the priorities. Which is quieter, the eheim or fx5? Also, if those side sponges on the FX get old, can you stuff polyfill in there as well instead of buying their expensive replacements?
@nyinfamous2k28 жыл бұрын
eheim's are one of, if not the, most quiet canister filters on the market. the fx5 will give you more flow and media capacity though.
@StevePolandAquatics8 жыл бұрын
+Eric K Eheim is quieter. Wouldn't worry about those side sponges too much. Would take a long time for them to go bad.

I rinse my bio media with tank water. You mentioned that you use dechlorinted water. That doesn't kill bacteria? Ive always heard that it has to be tank water.
@StevePolandAquatics8 жыл бұрын
+AGUILAR3 it's the chlorine that kills the bacteria so you just need to throw some dechlorintor in there and you'll be fine. No need to use actual tank water.

Is there something different about those ceramic rings that makes them better for mechanical than bio? I always thought ceramic rings were meant to be bio media. I know they're not the best but when I first got c530 I used the ceramic rings as my bio media
@StevePolandAquatics8 жыл бұрын
+Reid Smith they aren't porous. Most media that's designed for bio has holes or ridges to give it a larger surface area for the bacteria.

Steve, I noticed that you don't use carbon when packing your media in the 2217. Do you not use carbon at all? Also, if you did use it, where would you place it? I am currently packing my media based on eheim's recommendation, however, my water output seems to slow down drastically after about 3 weeks. I'm running two 2217's on a 125 gallon stocked with 6 fish (oscars and severum). I would greatly appreciate any advice. ,,,
@StevePolandAquatics6 жыл бұрын
I don't run carbon. It's not really necessary and you have to remove it when you medicate which I always found to be a pain. But if you do use it, you want to put it (and any other chemical media) at the end of the chain. So mechanical -> Bio -> Chemical. And I would say that two 2217s on a 125 isn't enough. If you're able, I would add at least one big filter like an FX6. Your 2217s may just be clogging due to the amount of waste.

Can you go into bio media a little? My canisters contain carbon but no such bio media. Is Bio media a replacement for carbon?
@urbansk8r2312 жыл бұрын
Hi, you don't need to use carbon. Cause carbon will remove tds ( total dissolve solids) like fertiliser for your plants and medications ect. Once carbon gets full it may leach it back into aquarium. Most people will only use carbon if they want rid tank of meds. After few days take it out. So carbon is necessary.
@craigwoodhull30287 жыл бұрын
Woody's Discus Steve great video !!! I agree with everything, but rinsing the media is not necessary ! I have too many Discus in my aquarium ( what else is new ). So daily water changes, hence perfect water parameters for my beauties. Water is a bit cloudy, fish are far and acting like true Cichlids/Discus, fronting,chasing etc.. So the water changes will change to once a week and I bet she goes back to crystal clear. Woody
