"Shut up and preach!" really encompasses it perfectly. They don't want to follow Christ, they want a stamp of approval to sin against people they think no one will want to protect.

I worked with a gent who was an Anglican minister. We talked about life a lot, and there wasn't any 'test of faith" type of conversation, but *plenty* about how his congregation tested his patience. As he put it, they wanted him to be their "cruise director", providing all the entertainment on Sunday, but they really didn't want to hear sermons or any of those Biblical deep cuts that are part of the faith. I know I wasn't the only one exhorting him to get out, and while I haven't spoken to him in years, the last I knew, he'd moved on from the pulpit and was working for a Christian school. While our spiritual paths diverged, I can't fault a guy for wanting to be what my acquaintances and I used to call an "Honest Christian", and plenty of us here wish the self-proclaimed "True Christians" would do the walk as often as they do the talk.

Close to where I live, there is a small denomination of Christians who have been among the first Christians to accept gay marriage BY DOCTRINE, and their church organises every year summer camps for the youth where their religion is NOT shoved down everyone's throat (they make one preaching at the end of camp and participating is not mandatory for any of the camp goers), and in those camps they welcome people from all classes, from all ethnicities, and from all orientation. They made dedicated gay and trans summer camps for teenagers and apparently they are a blast. In general it is important when dealing wiith animals or pre-likngujistic chlldren that they trust you.. If they trust you , you can shoe them (horse) shear them (sheep) milk them (cow, goat) inspect their teeth , load thrm up with 160lb and take them for a 30 moile walk (mule). I got baptized in 1977. About 10 or 12 years ago I got in touch with my childhood preacher, who was very very old elderly at the time. We talked every few weeks. One day, I asked him, “ Bob, would you consider our church to have been fundamentalist?” He said, “ well I certainly thought that we were, but apparently I was a screaming liberal and never knew it.” I laughed really hard, and he explained that well he hadn’t changed, similarly everyone around him had. “ fundamentalism” as he understood it, and as I was brought up to understand it, meant concentrating on the fundamentals of what Christ taught: love, compassion, forgiveness, helping. He was long retired in his 80s, but occasionally he would sit in at this or that church as a guest preacher when they needed someone to fill in. He would give the same kinds of sermons that he gave 40 or 50 years ago - sometimes exactly the same sermons, since he kept every single one he ever preached on file, and if you didn’t have time to drop a new one for his guest spot, he would pull one of the old ones - and he would take flack from people accusing him of being woke

Steve, you should’ve been a pastor! As a Christian, I was deeply moved by this. Your ‘preaching’ carries so much weight and conviction that it’s hard to you believe you are an atheist. What you said is not only relevant to our current predicament but it challenges us and calls us all to self-reflection, which is something I wish we could see more of in our churches.

The pastor should have continued on the rest of Matthew 25: “Then he (the King) will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’ “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

Fantastic as always, Steve. But remember the last part of Matthew 25, where Christ says that those who neglect or mistreat His "least of these", the poor, the sick, the homeless, the imprisoned, and the migrant will go to their ETERNAL PUNISHMENT. Not to mention that Christ said that not only are we to love God, but EQUALLY to love our neighbor as ourselves. These people, through their mindless bigotry and hate have damned themselves. And for what? Just to "own the libs"? Chimpanzees, Baboons, and Gorillas, our hominid cousins, have more sense than that.

I got dragged along to my grandparents' church this Christmas, it was an interesting experience, but it felt hollow (the service, not the people, they were very nice), the preaching focused a lot on exalting Jesus/God, the way people should act twoards them, how we are not worthy of their glory and how that means we should cherish their love and so on, giving me the impression that we are all characters in a show produced, directed, writen by and starring God in several roles It did nothing for me, I expected that of a christian service, and there was no message that was good or bad in there for me to care about as a non-believer This comedy sketch has managed to be so much more compelling and nice, I may not be a believer, but that is the kind of Christian message I can agree with, we should lift each other up
