Thanks Steve, you've inspired me to sow carrots and broad beans in containers and red onion sets. We've been trying to tame our laurel hedge so my veg growing is being neglected.

I have always hated cooked cabbage - coleslaw -ok but not cooked. When we were last in the UK we dined in York where I was served red cabbage and it was delicious - I asked the chef how he had prepared it and he had cooked it lightly and then added balsamic vinegar and demerara sugar and cooked it for a further few minutes. Brown sugar works just as well for me!

Hi Steve, thanks for that great video. I just wanted to ask your advice. I planted lots of Asian greens in the polytunnel once the tomatoes and cucumbers finished and I covered them with netting straight away as the outside Asian greens always get eaten by what I thought was flea beetle. However, these Asian greens are full of the usual holes and I’ve secured the netting very well so could you tell me What I’m doing wrong and What you think might be happening? Yours are always look so perfect and I’m frustrated x

There are 4 things to consider. Flea beetle already under the nets or already in your modules, tiny slugs, tiny caterpillars and the way you transitioned. I always keep my seedlings up high, completely clear my tunnel and scrub it down, leaving it free of anything living for a few days before replanting, apply sterile compost before planting to cover the soil. I have flea beetle too in September, but not so much in October : All the best - Steve

Hi Steve, loving your content, could you tell me what grow lights you have? I’m a Newby to inside growing, could you give me some tips? Am enjoying your winter gardening. Going to have a go at growing winter carrots. Many thanks.

Hi Michelle, the best thing to do is have a read (and watch the videos) of my chapter on growing with lights, it's in the basics section of my ebook, and you can read it for free here: steverichards.notion.site/Growing-with-lights-1b69ebde72a345ab890f2cdc1fced4e3?pvs=4 there's links to recommended lights there too : All the best - Steve

That’s the thing, I don’t have space to plant them out in winter, I need every inch for winter harvests, I only have space in spring

Steve, your knowledge of growing is amazing. I so value your advice and growing guidance. I had some absolutely stunning calabrese plants comig on. I planted them out and within a week the whole bed was destroyed- assume slugs as they were netted against the pigeons and cabbage white. I did sprinkle the bed with a few pellets before planting, but it has been so wet. Anyway, after much rambling on. what i would like to ask is if it would be ok to sow another lot of modules with calabrese marathon now? Thank you so much. Happy gardening 😃
@SteveRichards
@SteveRichards 9 ай бұрын
Calabrese could be sown now under grow lights for about 6 weeks, it you’d have to very carefully harden it off and move it to a tunnel/greenhouse and then plant in March. You’d not get it much earlier than if you started it in February though : all the best - Steve

Can I sow carrots in a raised bed now? With no coverage? I am new to this.
@SteveRichards
@SteveRichards 9 ай бұрын
not in my experience no, you will need to wait until March and even then they will benefit from fleece to provide warmth and protection from carrot root fly, also watch out for slugs and snails under the fleece, they can eat a whole bed in a night : All the best - Steve

This probably sounds like a silly question but do you think I would have success starting Purple sprouting broccoli / Rioja F1 under grow lights now?
@SteveRichards
@SteveRichards 9 ай бұрын
I don’t unfortunately, Rioja flowers in early spring and I just don’t think you could get big healthy plants in time, even with grow lights. PSB is really best grown in early summer for a spring harvest although there are varieties that flower earlier, they aren’t to prolific or consistent

Hi Steve, Do you overwinter any lettuce? Do you do it in 40 cell trays or pot on to larger pots? I have lettuce i sowed and pricked out end of september. Now in 40 cell trays and about 4 weeks old.
@SteveRichards
@SteveRichards 9 ай бұрын
I sow into 40 cell trays and plant at a month old, so all of my over-wintered lettuce is in the ground, I find it gets off to a much faster start that way in February. In the past I’ve had it in modules though, provided it’s well ventilated it’s ok in a 40 cell tray

Thanks Steve, I will have a bed coming free in my Polytunnel in about 2 weeks time. Would it be of any advantage to plant them out then?@@SteveRichards
