Wow, Steve has a great voice too. The first time I encountered Steve Vai’s name was in a guitar notation book of Frank Zappa’s music my brother brought from Germany back in probably 1980. I’m a drummer but I remember thinking “who can figure out this complicated stuff?”. There were some very unusual groupings, odd meters such as 9/8, 32nds etc. I was in another part of the world where we didn’t have access to all the recent recordings. I had heard Zappa’s “Joe’s Garage” in the radio once. Anyways, a few years later I found out Steve Vai is also a guitar virtuoso. For me and my generation of East Europeans the undisputed “guitar god” was Ritchie Blackmore. However, if you ask me to name my favorite guitar instrumental I would list Steve’s “Tender Surrender” and Blackmore’s “Maybe Next Time” as equals at the top. Thank you, Steve.
@lucindairis80854 жыл бұрын
Tender surrender a class act on it own. High standard of excellent for that song. It’s like the first time I heard. Wow! I can’t play guitar to that song many times. All I want to do is listen to it. Many Thanks. I like Ritchie Blackmore. Thousand and probably trillions have tried to cover Smoke under water and Black Night . Nothing better than the original thanks. Other great songs too. Highway Star. Cheers

Hey Steve, Just like to say that if it wasn't for you I don't think I ever would have crawled out of my basement and gone to University. You inspired me to play the guitar and not just to play but to really understand everything I could about music. I was never confident with my intelligence as a teen and thought I was pretty stupid, to be frank. Though when I picked up that guitar I became truly obsessed, all my confidence issues went out the window and all that mattered was what I could do to that fretboard. I would constantly use your work ethic and music as a source of inspiration. When I got to a certain point in music theory, specifically really understanding the modes, I realised that if I could teach myself all these abstract concepts regarding music theory then I could probably do the same regarding scientific abstraction, it's all the same at the end of the day. 6 years later and I just finished my Masters in Advanced Chemical Engineering and thinking about going to medical school. Thank you for inspiring me to be the best person I can be and thank you for making me understand that it doesn't matter who you are, if you have the drive and commitment then you really can do anything. There's so much more but I'll leave it at that. One more thing, there's one thing I've noticed regarding improvisation and the process of writing music. For me, the process has always been somewhat religious. In the sense that I think of nothing when I write music, it's a natural process more akin to the immune response or breathing than it is an active activity. I'm not thinking about chords, scales, time signatures or even melody in some cases. The main theme is I don't even feel like I write my own music but rather the music already exists in some unknown realm we've yet to measure and I'm a conduit between the two worlds unknowingly translating this ephemeral current. I really don't mean to sound arrogant but this is the best way I can describe it. It is a meditative process and the closest thing I'll ever come to a religious experience (I'm agnostic). I simply and honestly don't understand the process and yet it's something I take part in. How do you feel about this and is it something you also experience? Chris

These videos are great and the detail is something I never thought I'd see when I pored over the liner notes of "Passion and Warfare" In college. Since then we've crossed paths here and there. An email I had the honor of getting years ago. Saying hi to Thomas Nordegg before your Video Games Live performance. Then a short conversation at NAMM. I bought a Jem90HAM in 98 or so. Loved it but sold it. Big mistake, but these things happen. Then I got a 77VBK and had Herc Fede swirl it green to be like a 77GMC. It's called Jade and is my pride and joy. Then I got the Jemini. And now, until I practice enough guitar and release an album to earn an AxeFX 3, I use BiasFX2. I absolutely love it. Using it with some lydian magic gives me a sound very similar to yours for brief moments, if I may humbly say so. Greatly looking forward to more insight into your world, Steve. Safe and healthy wishes to you and your family! -Alex

« Visual sound theories » in your extraordinary live with philharmonics, I thought it was relative to images linked with sounds. It’s the title of the live, but maybe there’s a part of it ? Because I think that your sounds deliver the expressions of emotions, feelings, and it’s possible to visualize positive feelings with images linked to your sounds. I do. Added to this, for me, your guitar sounds have something soothing. You are really an extraordinary musician. Thanks. 🙏🏼 The power of a music, sounds, of a song, a musician, a singer mustn’t be underestimated, never.
