This is just a beautiful act of kindness and generosity. He's basically open sourcing all of his knowledge and insight. This is one of those rare videos where the techniques aren't the highlight. The meat and potatoes are the little tidbits that give insight into how he thinks about music and the instrument. Thank you, Steve.

I think Steve was being very polite to the guy who was complaining about having to play BS gigs to get by.....I would've said he should be grateful that he's not asking "Do you want fries with that?" to get by instead of playing guitar. I've been playing for ages and am always very happy to get a paying gig playing instead of some other crap job that is miserable in countless ways. Thanks to Mr. Vai for putting these videos up, I always enjoy hearing/watching him play as well as listening to his stories and advice for us non virtuoso types. Cheers to him and hopefully he'll keep these coming as they're absolute gold. \m/

1:12:15 Steve Vai - Thank you so much for your answer!!! Although it wasnt my question, I can totally relate to the person who was asking it and I have been through a lot of these negative feelings towards being a professional musician. The answer you are giving here, from my experience, totally hits the spot and it almost drove me to tears. Thank you again, for sharing this wisdom (in a video about ear training).

It’s said to be careful and not to meet your childhood heroes because of the pedestal you create in your mind about them. It’s a recipe for disappointment. I can unequivocally tell you two things about Steve Vai. 1st. Is that he is every bit as grounded, real and humble as he comes across in these videos. Truly a great presence not just a great guitar player. 2nd. If you have the opportunity to meet him, take the time and do so. You will not be disappointed. As a child Steve was my superman, and as an adult I had the chance to meet him and I found him to not just be superman he is a super man. Corny I know, but it was a great pleasure and experience to meet your childhood hero and not be let down. I am more than sure, he understands this, and it is this integral connection to people and his audience that makes him great.

A good thought, indeed 🌟 You can attach several other "life" inspiring/changing aspects, basically go beyond even music, on to the overall wellbeing for life & living - why the heck NOT! Quarantine, no Quarantine - one should develop habits, once focus is formed & blueprint is created.. Taking charge of whole life, few months & years down the line, one would be *amazeballed* where Life has reached, surprisingly creating & changing Versions of thy self 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 it's a streak to go by, and is rewarding beyond mere mind's understanding, and addicting in best form. 💫

I never realized how much Steve Vai is like the modern Jeff Beck. Liquid slithery snake like lead lines and his sense of Groove and ability to do these massive slides from one portion of the fretboard to the next with that circular vibrato and tremolo bar manipulation his remarkable. Regardless of what people may think he doesn't rely on many gimmicks going crazy with tapping but rather placing tasteful taps for a purpose, he doesn't spend his time just burning through scales based on repeating triplets quadruplets 5, 6 or 7 note groupings. He really shows a lot of restraint despite the fact that it's guitar dominant instrumental music. His Focus really is always in the melody regardless of whether he's playing slow or fast but he never shreds for longer than necessary. There is always a purpose behind his flurries and it always serves the song and the Melody. I think when he first came on the scene, the only people you had to compare him to or guys like Joe Satriani Eddie Van Halen Warren demartini Yngwie Malmsteen George Lynch etcetera and when I listened back to all the players of the 80s who are good, I think Steve was perhaps the most original and certainly the most quirky but without a doubt the most restrained and rarely resorts to look at this parlor trick I am doing. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of parlor tricks on guitar that are very challenging for any player but once you become extremely proficient at some if you practice long enough for you it's a parlor trick, some of the sweeping, Legato lines and tapping by guys unlike Van Halen who seamlessly integrated it into his style so when he did it it wasn't like watch this guitar acrobatic trick I learned during the middle of the song where it was inappropriate. But Steve Vai was never like the guitar player who I compare to a flashy actor in a kung fu movie who's doing a gymnastics routine for 5 minutes rather than simply doing the most direct thing to win the fight. unlike those Shameless show-offs people who do that aren't really showing anything Musical everything Steve Vai does has a musical purpose and if it's experimental it's never intended to be a technical trick but rather it's intended to take the melodic and harmonic content of the song to a different place. Whenever people start to believe that certain players who've been around for a while are not as relevant as they once were, that only applies to guys who are not the true innovators. People like Eddie Van Halen (RIP), Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, Larry Carlton, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robben Ford, John McLaughlin. Al Dimeola, Billy Conners to name a few continue to evolve as players and will always be considered the all-time greats regardless of where new techniques take the guitar. although certain techniques are just the way certain people play such as Stanley Jordan who has been around for 40 years, Allan Holdsworth (RIP) and Tosin Abasi. they are all remarkable players but I think that some of their approaches to the instrument will certainly inspire people to do different things, but it seems like when people get so far outside the reservation , it is really their own thing and to make it the new thing all guitar players must learn seems unrealistic given its highly personalized nature.

This is invaluable wisdom. If only I could have heard this when I was a kid. I recognise myself in so many of the things that he mentions. It's as if he's talking directly to me. Thank you mister Vai.

This is the coolest shit ever. Loved seeing his modern primitives set at STARMUS in Norway 2017. Also shook Vai’s MASSIVE hands lol

Hi Steve, This may be a strange question but very important i think: How do you eat during the day for optimal performance, sharpness, learning, creativity and practicing. So basicly what is your advice on a diet for optimal performance. This is not about not being a vegetarian. I was traditionally brought up with 3 meals a day, but I find myself not sharp, productive, creative for a long time after each meal.

I found myself wondering about the same thing... normally i during meals i try to focus on other aspects of musicality, or just listening to disks.. keep the mind engage.

Mr. A Mulder: I urge to try Intermittent Fasting with a Ketogenic Diet. You might find loads of info right here on KZbin with the most knowledgeables Dr. Jason Fung and Dr. Eric Berg.

I started playing guitar in 1981 at age 10 and I'm so glad that for the first 6 years or so, I had no idea what Tab was. I wore out tape player after tape player learning songs & solos and I developed a great ear from doing that. Later on, I started teaching guitar and I noticed that the students who learned songs mostly from Tab seemed to lack feel, touch, smoothness, and heart. I would give them homework to try to build their ear & their feel but most were just lazy and spoiled for Tab. Bottom line, It's SUPER important to build your inner ear! It's okay to learn some songs from Tab too but always learn it while playing with the track. I also suggest downloading a relative pitch app on your phone. Think about it... Weightlifters HAVE TO develop their muscles, Artist HAVE TO develop their inner eye, and musicians HAVE TO develop their inner ear. Rock On!

If something good came out of covid 19 it's the Steve Vai lessons and chats!!! Such a smooth style of playing I always had a rough style especially when not recording you're very melodic but a hint of raw energy and raspy tone. Thanks for the ear training lesson!!! -Carlos Right on;)

Thank you for Saturday, it feels like I've seen somebody really play the guitar for the first time. And the combination with the MO is just pure magic

31:40 Pretty sure I had the same book as a kid. _Since I've Been Loving You_ is the first guitar solo I learned note for note all the way through.

Without emotional connection, any piece would be similar to a computer generated music. Steve's art is an example of emotional connection at its best. Love your music. Thanks Steve.

I will sit here for hours just to listen to what you have to say Mr. Vai, the way I see it is you can never get enough information especially from a master like you. This journey I call guitar I've been on for 29 years is the one thing in my life that has always been there for me through the good times and the bad, so I want to learn as much as humanly possible to be the best player I can be.

19:04 Actually, Phrygian mode has a natural 5th. The flat 2nd is the thing. What gets played here first is a Locrian mode (flat 2nd & flat 5th) . Then on the higher parts he starts playing a natural 5th, so it becomes a Phrygian.
