Tips: You can always ask a Cambodian house if you can stay overnight with them, they'll most likely say yes; that is if you don't mind the condition of their house. And they most likely feed you, too. It's a Cambodian custom and tradition. Worst case scenario, go to any nearby temple, they will let you stay and feed you. If they deem you a good person, they will treat you like a family member.

it part of the culture. you can always ask the temple monks if you can stay with them. it’s common even for locals to stay at temples when they travel, especially outside the cities and into the more rural areas. however, in recent years, there has been some foreign tourists making it a little more difficult for temples to accept foreigners because they would take things with them that belongs to the temple. but like someone else in the comment section said, you can ask any family you meet if you can stay with them and most of the time, they will welcome you.

That’s good to know! Thanks for sharing. Sorry to head some foreigns taking things that belong to the temple.

Khmer people have always been kind and welcoming to anyone. Many centuries ago, we offered many asylum-seekers from south China, but they mistreated us and decared independence and then fought against us. But this custom is still carry-on until today to always be welcoming to strangers and be kind. We have been through a lot during our past time, but we will not stop being kind to others.
That’s sooo sweet yours too and Combodia people 🙏😻😍

The host was very kind, and the kids were incredibly smart. When visiting rural Cambodia, you’ll always be greeted with smiling faces, and the locals are often happy to help you with food or even offer you a place to stay-provided you don’t mind their humble living conditions. One thing to keep in mind, especially when interacting with the elders, is that they sometimes say things that might sound blunt or teasing, but it’s never meant to offend. In fact, it’s often a sign of affection. For example, if you’re a bit chubby, they might playfully say "Kamab mab" (កាម៉ាប់ៗ), which literally means “you are chubby.” This isn’t body shaming or bullying; it’s simply their way of adoring someone, including foreigners and children. I also heard in the video, when the mother-law suggested you should get a haircut-it’s likely because long hair on men is uncommon in rural Cambodia. Again, this isn’t criticism but rather a reflection of their honest, affectionate nature. Understanding this helps you appreciate their warmth and sincerity, even if their words come across differently at first.

Could you please answer one question for me? I am planning a trip to Cambodia next year. I don’t want to make a lot of hotel reservations as I want to keep my trip very flexible. I do plan to visit multiple cities when you applied for your visa prior to your trip did you have to have any reservations made so that your visa could be processed?

I only had one reservation, that was the first hotel I was staying in when I first arrived. I believe that’s the only thing they ask about is where you are initially staying.
