Grandfather worked with mules in the army in North Africa during WW2 - absolutely adored them. Always told me that while horses want a leader, mules expect a partner.

So, the mare I ride identifies as a mule. ^^' She won't do anything for you if she doesn't know you or if you're too rude: she will stuck in each corner of the training area, won't turn when you ask, turn when you don't want to, refuse to go ahead, lowering her head and maybe kicking (lazy kick though, not rodeo mode) when you ask her for cantering. She's an handful, one of the most stubborn horses I have ever met. She''s smart enough to know how to do whatever she wants with the less effort possible; she doesn't try to make her rider fall, because she knows she doesn't even need to do that. But, if you treat her with respect and are more stubborn than her, she's incredibely nice; still lazy, but nice. She's perfect on trail: she fears absolutely nothing. For the first time in my life, I can ride without a coach; so, for the first time in my life, I'm trying to teach something to a horse, meaning I'm not an experienced horse teacher... It took us one hour, but I managed to teach her how to stop (from walk) without reins, and how to walk on the slightlest pressure. I was mesmerized that, a few days later when I came back (I can only ride her twice a week), she didn't forget!

A friend of mine owned a really nice, bright chestnut Quarter horse mule a few years back. She made me smile one day when she said " What we call 'stubborn' ? The mule sees as 'self preservation' !" LOL

I think Zeb is great, such a character and very bright. I noticed that he went better at a trot in the school when the owner was using less leg so perhaps rewarding for going forward with less leg pressure works for him? Looks like he is trusting his owner more and gaining more confidence. A great result again

Mules are much different than horses in temperament! You have to understand and work WITH them. They are very intelligent and can be wonderful companions and work-mates. Great job with Zeb. I understand why she would want to keep him, even if he couldn't be ridden. Now she knows that she CAN ride him. Well done!

I totally agree. Mules have a lot of self preservation which they get from the donkey. That's where what people call stubbornness comes from. They are intelligent and can quickly figure things out. Once you have their trust and if they are treated right, you will have the most loving faithful friend forever. Or that's how it was with my mule. I trusted him more than any horse I ever rode, especially on trails.

You need to bond with him and he will do anything for you. Yes! They want a partner, not a dictator. Have had mules for years and the one i bought at 18 months is now 23 and goes wherever I point him.

But in the beginning, he had an attitude and I had to lay him down three times and have a talk with him. Laying him down got his attention. No pain or cruelty whatsoever,

I have a 23 year old too and hes finally acting like a grown up!! Makes me think he's gonna live to be 50. I have a young one I started and I just love them both. I stare at them and smile and they think I'm weird.

In the early 1970's, Dad went hunting with mules in Idaho. They were packed with all of their equipment for the week. On the first day, the guide told everyone while hiking up hill to grab the mule's tail to help you get up the incline. My dad's mule kicked and broke his arm. Dad set the break and continued for the week! His pain tolerance always amazed me. You could say he was stubborn as a mule. He wasn't going to let a mule ruin his hunting trip.

Did you see it? Often, when the mule got to the point of doing what you wanted, that tail would slow down. A few times the tail would completely relax for an instant.

The tail swishing seems self regulatory. Like children who rock themselves back and forth, or people who bounce their leg. Maybe he's just understimulated/bored, and once he's actually given a problem to solve he calms down.

Try honey on the bit for a few bridlings then stop. It worked for me. Then randomly I would put a bit on and it was a surprize to him. I ended up with a horse that would drop his head and take the bit so softly. It became a positive experience for him. Loved him dearly...

What a lovely owner to stick with him. She needs a different saddle though. Please consult mule riding experts on a saddle that fits. When she mounted, her backside was on top of the cantle. That pressure point on that area must be tremendous. Also, as she is tall, she might need to ride with longer stirrups. Zeb's a good mule! Thank you for helping him!

You read my mind..❤. Due to their conformation, Mules are usually tacked with a crupper, breast collar & a belly band to keep the saddle from slipping. Make no mistake...if your tack begins to roll or slip your mount will not be shy to let you know he is not happy. Mules are very smart & extremely opinionated. Think like a mule....:)

I’ve ridden a mule a bit and ground worked with donkeys. Not sure stubborn is the right word. They plant when they’re scared. Seems counter intuitive but that’s the natural reaction. So it’s confidence and, unlike horses in a way, they look for your kindness and courage. Horses look more for leadership. I loved these two. What an interesting partnership and both of them very sweet. Great patience as always from Steve.

OMG, thank YOU!I'm 72 years old, and back when I was about 16, maybe 17, I had a very wonderful, yet very stubborn horse that I was training, my "heart" horse., Comanche. One day I was riding him, and backing him up, around a fenced arena, and up toward the barn, when a friend came along and asked me what in the world I was doing to him! I told her that he had begun balking at the water trough he had draunk from many times, even daily, suddenly not wanting to go up to it. He wasn't afraid of it, just was being stubborn, so I said if he wanted to back up, fine, i'd make him back up until he was tired of it and would give up . She told me it would never work, and was the wrong thing to do. He had balked 3 times at the trough, and this was the 3rd time I had backed him up. This time when we got to the trough, he walked up to it, and I could feel him begin shifting his weight backward. He picked up one front foot, and then thought about it, and put it back down and stood there like the gentleman he should be. It was magical. I always had a way of thinking like a horse, and although I sometimes was criticized for being too gentle, or taking too much time, accused of spoiling my horse, I became a person some came to for advice because they could see the results I was having. Sorry for this long comment. I just wanted to let you know, Steve, that this video did my old heart so much good, reminding me of the incident with Comanche. I've never seen another trainer back up a horse (or mule), as I had done. So, thank YOU.

What a great video on teaching people how to stick with it! No matter the problem, no matter the age, no matter the fitness level, it can be done! While I do think she might work on being quiet in the saddle, especially at the walk, as her leg does go quiet at trot, she does an excellent job at taking instruction & letting go of the past & being in the present. The bike in the sunroom. Love it! My hubby was brought up on bikes/motorcrossing. His Dad bought this same bike all apart(we call them basket cases here in 🇺🇸)& he put it together. My hubby took it for a ride & was doing loops on gravel & he dumped the bike. He couldn’t find a scratch, dent, scuff, nothing on it. Later his dad said you fell on my bike, didn’t you? My hubby who was 12 said no. Of course Dad knew. He told my hubby the rear light wasn’t working😂Beautiful bike. Enjoy! The mule was adorable. I’m happy to hear it’s getting better for them

Gotta add this cuz I've learned and I'm excited to see u work with a mule....if you hold steady pressure when they resist something.....they click into the donkey side and will stay forever!! I've learned to add a slight wiggle or side to side with my lead line to stop them from locking down and napping. Ha. It works!! Then once they know you won't just hold...then they learn to come along . The donkey side is in there when they want to trick you. Ha

Being a horse girl and a motorcycle girl, I LOVE that bike!! I've been riding my own for 10 years now, didn't start until I was 62 years old. I got tired of looking at the back of the hubby's helmet for the past 44 years when we rode and wanted to see the open road in front, so I cashed in my life insurance policy from work (hubby said, "Wait a minute, I might need that policy with you driving a motorcycle!" LOL.) and bought a 2008 Honda Shadow Aero 750 as a retirement gift for myself. I took the safety class on Mother's Day weekend, so the family celebrated Mother's Day without me, and the rest is history, as they say! Enjoy your "new" 65 year old bike! What a find, especially with your connection with that brand, year and model! How absolutely COOL!!

Good lesson. My young mare was also terrified of cracks in concrete or crossing lines, it was genuine fear for her life, by acknowledging her fear and supporting her and gently encouraging her, she was able to find the courage to go across then lots of love. Same on the road with white lines, there's a round 30 mph sign about 3 or 4' across, with gentle support, she could then go straight through the middle. That was a great job with Zeb, & Steve recognised his fear & need to be shown & supported.

❤ This vid (Steve obvs) and ❤ Celia and Zeb too... Steve is doing people-psychology as much as horse training. Also fantastic that when Celia asked what they wanted on arrival and Steve replied 'we'd like a cup of tea please' Celia took that to mean making home made cake and shortbread... I'd wager a few local charity sales have made a 'couple of bob' of her great baked goods... That loaf cake and shortbread! IMO as with equines, the simple with quality ingredients all put together in the right order at the right time, esp with experience = BEST! *SO happy Steve helped Celia - husband died, gained grief weight and lost it 🎉 (super hard) rescued a mule.... and then needed help to 'take up the reins' of life again.

My friend had a donkey that had a little stud mule. She did not have the stallion. Since they cannot breed, she put him in with one of her mares that she didn't want to breed that particular year. Sure enough! He got her pregnant! Talk about being surprised! So it's not normal but it CAN happen!!!

I have always wanted a mule but could never find one that was tall enough for my long legs, but i do follow lots of youtube mule riders and game packers in America of course,one of my favs is bronks and donks.I have looked for one in U.K but the nearest i came to one was a Irish Mammoth donkey that was 16.2hh gelding, so i couldn't even breed one,lots of people have also said that they would like a mule or a hinny so they are becoming more popular.You did good Steve and Tanya, well done for giving that lovely lady Zebs owner some homework, i know she will succeed and make him a lot more biddable, bless her. 🐎🦓⭐

I've learnt so much from you and I love you stories of why you do certain things and are very specific about how to behave and what you'll do around horses. So I'm going to tell you a story that has made me very careful about my face being near a horses face and particularly over their nose. My dad always stopped my sister and me from putting our faces near the faces of the horses we rode or any horse we said hello to... unless we had a hand on their nose. The reason being he had a Hanovarian called Boris when he first met my mum. He went to kiss and cuddle Boris and Boris swung his head up and hit my dad in the face breaking his nose. Just as it was healing a few weeks later he did the same thing again and re-broke his nose. Seeing you kiss the mule whilst standing at the mounting block when the owner went to get her hat I was screaming at the phone "put your hand on his nose first". Maybe it's generational horse injury trauma 😅 but that's one bit of advice that has stuck with me. Maybe after reading the story you will start putting a hand on the horse (or mules) nose first. Well done being stubborn. My husband says I am too 😂 I say only when it's needed 😌 ❤

Mule thought patterns , hmmm … I kept looking at Zeb’s ears for clues while ignoring the tail swishes. He understands your corrections and reward system, Steve. He seems to be high energy and wow those kicks were lightening-fast! I’m glad Celia doesn’t have grooming or tacking problems (and knows how to block and correct the occasional nip). She has riding skills and persistence, that’s great! I didn’t see Zeb buck, but I’m concerned about hard surfaces, riding alone for Celia. I hope she finds a riding buddy! Btw, Celia, congratulations on the continued weight loss - and you already looked wonderful!! 👍🌟 I’ll bet Zeb wonders why his work is getting easier and easier, lol! Tania. Oppositional is the word that comes to mind with this mule. I'm wondering how much comes down to individual personality & like people, some animals just refuse anything asked of them. I'm wondering also in looking at the poor rider who only wants to enjoy riding, is it even worth the constant battle with an oppositional animal? Like you mention, that tail never stops twitching his unhappiness. Horses are an expensive pursuit in both time, emotion & money. At what point should you call it a day & just look for a more willing creature? I'd like to know your take on it Steve. Thanks for all you do & show us!

@@GalaBrissy I didn’t know about training championships in the USA before. Apparently they assign an unbroken mustang (or mule) to each contestant and so many days later the competition/skills showing begins. Korey was a Champion mule trainer multiple times plus mustangs too.

Absolutely brilliant! You’re such a blessing to horses and their owners/handlers. It’s a great feeling … inspirational in fact … watching your VLOGs when time and time again you’ve proven your methodology beyond a reasonable doubt, in helping horses/owners to move forward! That was very interesting about the mule! It seemed to me that he wasn't that well trained & lacked experience and maybe had some bad handling in the past. So nice to see the great progress he made!!

Oh my gosh I've been waiting for this. Haaa. I'm a mule girl. I have 2 amazing johns whove taught me to be a better human. I have horses too but I got mule fever long ago . They are not for the hurried or for the ego . But once they connect to your soul they will do it ALL. I shoot mounted archery off of them. They love an interesting job!! Looking forward to this one.

Hey, I wish she’d give up this idea of riding that mule, if he was solid and bomb proof, but she’s getting up in age, and I’m 70 myself. I’ve ridden all my life and would ride green horses for people when I was young, I’d ride anything with hair. I just worry that he’s gonna dump her. Good luck with him ❤!
