Buck Brannaman makes a comparison between an abused horse and an abused child. The same would apply to an abused dog - or any animal that has regular contact with people. And the same would apply to an overly indulged horse, dog, child. And working with neuropsychology, I can testify that the methods Steve uses to help a balky or planted horse overcome apprehension - I love the video of the fell pony walking across rustling feed sacks between poles - also applies to phobias and panic attacks in people. I'm not saying horses are like people - far from it, I've been around them and ridden a lot of my life. But I love the principles that Buck Brannaman, Ray Hunt, Steve teach, because they're so universal. If only all of our lives could be lived with firmness, understanding, kindness, compassion, consistency - what a world we could have!! xx

I loved your tip about buying or taking over a horse from an excellent trainer - it was SUPER-APPROPRIATE for this case. I had wondered about Liv's ability to take over and establish herself as the LEADER to this horse. I was almost as "anxious" as LIV when it was time for her to take over at the end as I sensed her fear of being unable to master her horse. Old habits are as hard to break for the owners as they are for their animals. Your explanation of the expert horseman transfer to the novice was perfect. A horse will feel CHEATED when a novice rider is unable to provide the same protection the horse needed and was trained to EXPECT from its owner/rider. This is HUMAN PSYCHOLOGY as well as horsemanship. Consider instructor/student relationships. Whether a child in school or an adult, paying for instruction for a hobby, once an excellent instructor has taught the pupil, the next one must also be excellent or the pupil rightfully feels shortchanged and resentful. You might say, once excellence is experienced, anything lesser is not tolerated!

Way to go Steve!! I love it!! 💖 💖 Horses are so healing, and people need to remember that as well. Liv is truly appreciative I'm sure. We're all always learning whenever we work or are around horses. If you're not learning, you say you know it all. I've been working with horses for just over 50 years now, and I'm still learning!! I'd love another lifetime, retaining the knowledge I have now, to learn even more. My karate teacher once said, "You are always learning. If you aren't you're as good as living back in the caves." And that is so true. Love from Jenn, a trainer and former FEI Coach and Paramedic in Ontario, Canada. 💖 🇨🇦

Been watching your videos for a while now and one of the nicest things I notice is the change in the horses when you first start working with them. It's almost as if they are so very relieved to have someone in front of them who they understand. Their expressions show it, even if their behaviors don't. This fella really seemed to like being in the trailer. So, I wonder how many have gotten rid of the black paint on their ramps?

Loved this video. I love seeing how the horses change their attitude when they have clear leadership. It’s a good point you make about great horses going on to new homes where the owner is less experienced and reverting back to being difficult. I saw a video years ago before I’d really heard about natural horsemanship about a very well trained horse going to a new home. The horse became aggressive in the field and charged its owner and tried to bite them even outside the gate. They wondered why the horse had changed so much. I can understand now why that could have happened. Loved the dad dancing at the end - so funny. 👏👏👏👏

Steve's comment about buying from an excellent horseman or trying your horse with that person can backfire confirmed my concerns. I will have someone else train my horse ONLY IF I am training with him. As a recreational rider, I am nowhere near Steve's level of expertise. So I would insist I learn with the trainer and my horse. Love this video. So happy for horse and owner now on the right path together.

I agree with the person below. That's such a good piece of advice and one coincidentally the same thing my "mentor" and I were talking about on our trail ride today. Every one needs to be aware of the risks of buying a horse from someone much more experienced than they are. Thank you, as always for another wonderful video.

Another excellent learning experience for me!! Keep up the good work! So much gratitude for both and and Tanya!🤲✨💗 Ps. Your point was so important about a novice rider purchasing a horse from an experienced rider who had a horse that responded well to them due to their experience and connection and that that isn’t necessarily transferable. After all horses are sentient beings and it’s so much about our energy exchange. Not just about the mechanics.

Bravo, Steve! You are just amazing and I so enjoy watching how you work and I do love to listen to your voice. The thing that you do that reminds me of how I trained many ponies in my younger years is the light touch. Just the smooth down small rub on the neck or the muzzle. I always found that to be so soothing for the pony and for me. Never knew about dropping the head or the side give for the halter, the flex. But I know now and, given the chance, I'd use that in my sessions. You are wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing. 🥰

My unpopular opinion is: there are some horses that are simply difficult. They haven't necessarily been abused or badly trained (although they may have been). Regardless, some horses are born with difficult, combative temperaments. I say this as someone who has dealt with many different horses, although not as many as Steve here, but I'm sure if you asked any horse trainer of experience they would agree there are those minority of horses who really, really test you, and some you just can't help, or who are just too dangerous to be worth helping. This guy is not one of the ones to give up on, but people have to realise there are some very difficult horses out there

I agree as with dogs as well. I have seen dogs be great happy dogs then in one second, turn and bite. like their brain misfires. A neighbor was laying on her bed watching TV with her dog. while laying there she touched him upon her repositioning herself and then he turned and bit her face. She said he did that ALOT. no reason just turns and bites. he was healthy and everything. After the bed incident..she took him to vet to be put to sleep. she couldn't risk that again. the face was the last straw. she cried over it cause she loved that dog...but something in him was misfiring. with that said..all of our dogs are rescues so you never know what you will get. I am a firm/assertive dog owner so they dont get away with much with me. I have one that got into a fight with one of my other dogs..(didn't see that coming). After that i have watched her like a hawk, every move, every look, every trigger...and discovered she goes nuts when she is excited. Barking at someone or a squirrel running by..she goes out of her mind and snaps at everything around her. Her excitement can be dangerous. BUT since then....no fights cause she is rarely out of my site and i dont allow her to be around my other dog alone. They get along but its her excitement. She's been with me now 8 yrs and no other fights have occured. I was just missing all the signs I guess in the beginning but not anymore. I am not a trainer at all. I use to help a trainer and got some tips from him..but not on this issue. Andd like Steve says....even if she's great now..if someone else got her, she would most likely fall right back into that old pattern. I think if another person is going to take the horse or dog thats had past issues , needs to know how to handle that animal in the future. And NOT sell a horse to someone that doesnt have the leadership of being in control. That person would need to be trained as well. Makes me think...selling a car with no brakes. what does that say about the seller...?!
