Favorite performer favorite song he does. This was written for Stevie's friend Charley Wirz who was a mentor and helped Stevie in how he designed his guitars and who died of a heart attack. He changed guitars in the middle because it was the guitar they worked on together. This white guitar was named Charlie after his friend. The beat up guitar is Number One. In the fall of 1985, Stevie went into rehab at the same time as his best friend bassist Tommy Shannon. He was clean and sober almost 4 years. He helped many people into sobriety including Bonnie Raitt another great blues guitarist and singer. Stevie is my favorite but I love him even more as the very humble man he became and very giving and gentle which was so opposite his fierce stage presence. Tommy Shannon always wanted that known.

Eric Clapton was the one who reached out to Stevie and got him into rehab. He also got his brother Jimmy clean and sober. Jimmy credits Stevie with saving his life.

This song was written for a dear friend of SRV named Charley Wirz. Charley was the guy who built the white Stratocaster (which really isn't a Strat, but a strat style guitar made from a bunch of pieces that Wirz had lying around his music shop) that this song was played on during live performance; he also plays tin pan alley on this guitar quite often. The fact that he wrote such a beautiful piece for his departed friend is a testament to how heartfelt the loss was to Stevie.

all kinds of things happen while he's playing and he still pulls off what is imo his and THE best performance of any musician, the lyrics, the message, the emotion, the play, the presence..he practically levitates, he's captivating, you just know you're witnessing lightning in a bottle, like a guy who played with him as a kid once said when stevie was in the studio at 13, he made everyone feel special just by witnessing what he was doing, whole studio full of grown men in awe of a kid, of all the reaction videos I've seen here I haven't seen anyone get their minds blown the way SRV does it, seeing him is like seeing something that shouldn't exist

I was 15 and at this concert at the capitol theater, if my mom knew where I was I would still be grounded. Of all the songs he did that night this one has stuck with me for 37 years! I lived on Long Island New York so I was way outside the area I was allowed LOL. The message he gave that night needs to be repeated and repeated often!

This reaction touches my heart. SRV was my late husbands favorite artist, we had seen him LIVE almost a dozen times in our 36 years together, before SRV passed. Late last year I went to move my husbands truck to drain the rainwater and inadvertently switched the audio from FM to his CD player and this song came on, I felt him near me. Stevie always played and spoke that big, beautiful soul of his! A wise and loving man was taken from us WAY too soon. The back story on this particular song was that he wrote it for a friend of his named Charley Wirz, owner of Charley's Guitar Shop in Dallas. Charley was another of Stevie's father figures -- along with the likes of Albert and B.B. King. Charley died of a heart attack in 1985. He had made Stevie Ray Vaughan the white Strat-style Danelectro guitar with lipstick tube pickups and presented it to him in 1983 with the inscription on it that said "More in '84." Charley's death was a huge blow to Stevie, hence, the song "Life Without You."

Saw him do this live at River fest. 1985 or 86. Summer night on bank of Mississippi river. Saint Paul MN. SEVEN DOLLAR TICKET PRICE. SEVEN DOLLARS. SEVEN!. He was wasted and threatened at end to jump down and smack some hooligans in the crowd. He nearly died of drug toxicity shortly after the show. But his brilliance on that night could not be suppressed, contained, or even adequately described to anyone not there. I stupidly passed on chance to see his last show ( had no car) but consider myself blessed to have seen him close a show with this number on a beautiful summer night. Thanks for taking me back..

Story has it that his brother Jimmy found Stevie's squash blossom necklace at the crash sight. Heartbreaking. Must be one of Jimmy's most prized possessions 🥺 I'm only about 30 miles away from Alpine, so the tears come easy thinking back. Beautiful message he had this performance. @CuzKatieSaysSo It was Stevie's beautiful Coptic cross that was found at the crash site & given to Jimmy the next morning, just as they were leaving. Stevie had worn it nearly every day, from right after rehab to his death. You see it in almost every video of him during those last 4 years. And Jimmy displays it in the Official video for "Tick Tock" that he made after Stevie's passing. It's so beautiful & unique, just like Stevie himself.💙☮

Hard to believe the cross was found and not the squash blossom, which, because of its size, would have been so much easier to come off. Wonder what became of it. We couldn't make those concerts, had spent too much money on Grateful Dead shows during the summer, but my brother was there, he said it was an awesome show. Good to know the correction, but I will always wonder about the squash blossom necklace.

I had the great fortune to see SRV 5 times and was always blown away. Early on he would drink so much and still play with such fire, then the last few shows he was sober and even better. I cried hard when he died because his music and message touched me deep. I still tear up when I see some of his shows, like this one, when you can see he is just channeling the spirits and his Higher Power.

Wish you could have seen him live, Jamel. The guy permanently changed how my ears work, so I know you'd still be feeling it. I remember at 24 hearing the news that he died, just a month or so after seeing him for the 2nd time. Even at 56 I still can't get over it. I hadn't seen this one before, but it's now my second fave performance of his, only behind Tightrope on Austin City Limits. He made that guitar grow HAIR in front of the camera.
