Stevie Van Zandt is the ultimate underboss. His first big break came in the mid-70s as Bruce Springsteen’s right-hand man, guitarist, and occasional co-producer in the E Street Band. Later he seamlessly made the jump to acting as one of Tony Soprano’s key consiglieres, Sil, on "The Sopranos."
Van Zandt recently released his memoir, "Unrequited Infatuations," which details his career over the past 50 years. On today’s episode Bruce Headlam talks to Van Zandt about the budding New Jersey rock n’ roll scene in the ‘60s, and what it was like recording with legendary R&B singers like Ronnie Spector and Darlene Love. He also reminisces about first meeting Springsteen-who Van Zandt says he saw go from a shy kid who was too timid to speak, to one of the greatest entertainers of our time.

Fabulous interview with a very talented musician, songwriter and producer. The interviewer sadly neglected to address one significant part of Steven’s career as an artist, the period he was the lead guitarist, lyricist, producer and de facto manager for the very underrated and stylistically unique R&B/Rock band Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes.

5:26 "You didn't see four or five guys playing and singing. It didn't exist." Grant Mr. Van Zandt poetic license, as I am pretty sure he saw the Beach Boys, who were a huge band before the Beatles hit it big in America.

I can't figure that comment out, and I've heard it before from other people. So, if Steve "didn't see four or five guys playing and singing" who did kids dance to at high school dances or the local youth center, or wherever? Because Memphis and Chicago alone had probably hundreds of bands. There were certainly bands in South Jersey in the early sixties playing the resort towns all along the Jersey shore where he lived. And who was playing the Peppermint Lounge in NYC at the time? The Beatles and the British Invasion was great, but he gives them WAY to much credit. If he thinks rock and roll started when the Beatles arrived on the Ed Sullivan show, he knows way less about the music than he's given credit for.

I love Stevie he's such a awesome guy.I am a die hard Bruce fan and I've always thought that "Darkness on the Edge of Town" put him on the Map and laid the bricks for the Greatest Entertainer he is today..and what a badass FAST guitar player which a lot of fans don't realize.
