I was guarding the USAF's weapon storage area in New Mexico when this came out. And I would smuggle my 8-track player into the restricted area on Manzano Mountain Complex and sit on the hood of our truck overlooking the lights of Albuquerque listening to this all night on the midnight shift.

I bought this as a 20 year old Stevie fanatic when this came out expecting to hear classic Stevie. I listened to it once and put it away. Recently pulled out the vinyl as a 64 year old music fanatic and found it far more interesting. Like the best jazz musicians, Stevie never stopped moving forward.

I had an extended gig at a resort in Death Valley when The Secret Life of Plants came out. It became the soundtrack of a crazy, spectacular season of my life. For those who may remember, Stevie's records were as eagerly awaited in the 70's as the Beatles were in the 60's. But most people were expecting another Songs in the Key of Life, which was praised as his magnum opus. Plants was a commercial disappointment and I found dozens of copies in record resale shops. For me, however, as a fan of Tomita and other synth-based music, as well as classical and theater, this was pure genius.

This album marked a significant deviation from his previous works. Given the well-established and continuing format of popular music at the time, Stevie had to have received guidance that such arrangements would not fare favorably in sales. Send One Your Love is pretty cool, though 😎

@@small_ed I agree. And as he was producing Plants, Stevie was writing other, more accessible songs that appeared on Hotter than July, which came out not long after.

I was lucky enough to find and buy this Stevie Wonder album at a church rummage sale in near mint condition for only a dollar or two at the most, but that was over a decade ago and I had not actually listened to the record at all, so I need to rectify that and give the album its proper due. :)

As luck would have it, I found Stevie Wonder's 'Journey Through The Secret Life of Plants' LP record album about 15 or more years ago at my local Salvation Army Thrift Store and bought it for only two dollars. If you enjoy this music, I recommend seeing the film. This music is the soundtrack. Stevie is in a row boat, without his shades, handling the oars all by himself. Also, if you're interested in Dogon cosmology, you will be amazed by their knowledge of the star they call "Potolo" (?) which orbits around the Sirus star every fifty years, at which time they celebrate the orbital pattern through dance. The Dogon acquired their knowledge of this galactic activity eons ago without the aid of a telescope.

When it was first released I hated it. I thought it was garbage but over the years and now I'm mature, I understand it so much better. Still not his best project (not even close) but it's not as bad as I thought it was as a teenager.
@kurtfelix1412

It's really up there among his best. It's like a classical music suite: it tells a story based on various musical and lyrical themes and movements having to do with the documentary it accompanied. What's amazing about it is he used synths and modern instrumentation as opposed to classical instrumentation. The process is even more impressive, considering Stevie was visually impaired: "Wonder created the film score by having Michael Braun, the film's producer, describe each visual image in detail, while the sound engineer, Gary Olazabal, specified the length of a passage. This information was processed to a four-track tape (with the film's sound on one of the tracks), leaving Wonder space to add his own musical accompaniment. Wonder attempted to translate the complex information of the book and film into song lyrics (Wikipedia)". No it's not what you're used to regarding Stevie and his album of hit songs, but it remains one of his most impressive feats and the music is really beautiful.
