I was twelve years old growing up in central west London in a huge block of Edwardian flats called Oakwood Court. The year in question would have been 1973. Good friends, a brother and sister who also lived in the same block, were children of a single parent who would fill a few empty rooms with lodgers to help make ends meet. One such was this very tall, lanky American drummer who was apparently in a band called Curved Air. Back Street Luv was on the radio (I don’t think Copeland played on that one). All I remember about him is that he was enormously charismatic, full of energy (I should say rare energy) and really nice to us kids in a big brother kind of a way. He can’t have been much more than a kid still himself but he seemed very grown up to us. There were very tall ceilings in those flats (apartments in American parlance) and he would make time to give the smaller kids piggy back rides up and down the corridor. So I met Stewart Copeland a couple of times during that era and I can say first hand, however ruthlessly ambitious he was, he was a bundle of rare energy and conducted himself with much generosity of spirit. A great musician and a gentleman.

In 1979 I helped a friends band play at CBGBs - in the back someone had put a stamp all over the place “You’ve Been Arrested by The Police”.

Love Stewart Copleland and The Police! As a drummer myself, he has always been a hero and influence to me. Had the amazing opportunity to see the police reunion in Montreal in the mid 2000's!

Does Stewart ever sit down and stop moving during an interview? Every interview I see him in, he is always in motion.

What a nice guy Mr. Copeland is. Must be pretty fit doing all that walking. Thank you for again a wonderful interview.

Stewart Copeland is one of my favorite rock drummers of all time. l can't reconcile his elegant, spare style with him pacing [counterclockwise] around his main room while doing an interview. But, drummers are different.

In 1979 I was living in Soke-on-Trent and used to go to Victoria Hall in Hanley now and then. I missed the Police gig although I had bought Can't Stand Losing You. A workmate came to work the next day and said the band had been fuming as someone had stolen their van with most of their kit in it. I presume they eventually forgave the town.
