Thanks for this. I am self taught, and when I started, StewMac was THE resource for information and tools outside of very few subject matter books. I couldn't afford all the tools I wish I had, so they were also the resource from which I could determine what I could use that I already owned. I am close to 30 years in, and have a pretty decent collection of SM tools now. Can't say I have a single tool that I regret buying from them.

Stewmac tools are cheaper in the long run. A simple contact with them, when a tool breaks or wears out, and a new one is on the way. I learned the hard way that buying the cheaper versions ends up being more expensive in the long run. I get tired of the negative comments about Stewmac as well.

I only wish I had a rollaway full of StewMac tools. From my personal experience, I got a set of Golden Age tuners for a 12 string acoustic-a really nice Martin. They are the best thing that ever happened to that guitar. Even the G strings don’t bump up above the desired pitch when tuning. Even better, they were only available for slot head guitars at that time. I emailed them, and after almost no time, I had another 12 string Golden Age set for a solid peghead. They also happen to have Waverly tuners, which are THE KING in so many ways. Their guarantee is as good as the old Sears & Roebuck, only with high end tools, not that iffy quality from back in the day. Too bad not all US companies aren’t up to the Stew-Mac standard. As has been verified by a number of the undergraduates here on campus, THEY ROCK!

I do my own guitar work and have built a handful of guitars, refretted a couple, etc. I have some StewMac tools, some Crimson Guitar tools, and some other brands and some generic tools. It just depends on the tool for me. Some tools are no brainers and are just worth the cost for StewMac. Crimson makes some unique tools that I just liked better. And in some cases there are tools that I've used once and may or may never use again. Those make more sense to go generic for me. But if you are building guitars everyday, or even semi-professionally you'd be insane to cheap out on the tools of your craft. EDIT: There are some things that I will say I would never purchase from StewMac though. You can get better non-specialty wood working tools(chisels, planes) , soldiering irons, spray guns, etc elsewhere.

I always try to get Stew Mac and thankfully I'm now in the position that money isn't an issue, but no money me still pops up and rears his ugly head every once in a while. So I just bought a pair of fret nippers off of Amazon thinking I could save some money, well guess what? They sucked so bad I ended up spraining my wrist trying to cut the frets! I immediately ordered the Stew Mac version and it was like cutting through butter. Adam Savage has always said if you hardly ever use a tool, the cheaper version will usually do just fine, and at least in this instance, that's not the case.

@@TexasToastGuitars completely agree. I myself sometimes use inferior solutions because of cost, time or straight laziness. I feel that it can be acceptable for me. Still if there is a way to do it better, then it is better, whether I decide to use it or not. I can honestly acknowledge that your procedures are better than mine and still do it my way. Stewmac is geared for professionals, who are willing to pay what Stewmac charges. For the pros, the Stewmac tools save them time and money and reduce aggravation. I do wonder about StewMac products that are priced twice as much as competing products. I bought a Hosco Japanese-made fret saw that looks identical to Stewmac's $80 Japanese -made fret saw. It cost me less than $30. I acknowledge that just because the saws look very similar in photos doesn't mean they are identical. If the Hosco saw wears out more quickly, it may not make a difference to me. I'm an amateur builder and it's unlikely that I'll cut enough fret slots to wear out the saw.
