I totally agree with Mr. Hays. I’ve all ways been a shotgun guy but since I’ve been watching your channel I’ve become obsessed with getting some rifles. I do have a ruger m77 7mm mag I that I bought in 82 that is as new. I like the steyers and Sakos, but I’m fascinated by the single shot rifles as well. Do you hunt with those? Thanks for your work.

Here in Scotland don’t see .222 very often these days. Last one I had was a French made Gevarm which I sadly sold about 6 years ago. It had open sights on a heavy weight almost varmint weight 22” barrel Leupold scope fitted and was extremely accurate. I also had a Mauser 66 with open sights in 7x64 Sharpe and Hart with scope fitted and foolishly also parted with it. Of course here in U.K. we’re somewhat limited to the amount of firearms one is permitted to hold.

Does Scotland have a limit to firearms you can own? I haven't heard of any limits here in NI as long as you've a reason for ownership. Target shooting being a good enough reason. Wait times are a pain in the arse though.

A ranch near our old place in Montana had two Mannlicher 6.5mm rifles with set triggers and butter knife bold handles hanging in some old deer antlers in the mudroom off the kitchen. I was so fascinated with them when I was a boy. Wood out to the end of the barrels and that overall sleek design. I imprinted on that look and still think it's just a wonderful look for a deer rifle.

Everything about this rifle is interesting, the grooves receiver that doubles as a single mount base, fluted barrel and quite a large “pot belly” stock. Very beautiful rifle and the engineering and design is something that intrigues. Coupled with a fantastic optic, this setup makes my wallet weep.
@AntonGudenus
@AntonGudenus Жыл бұрын
For quickly transitioning optics between guns, I'd advise looking into "Dentler" mounting plates. They are really well built and designed. And using their "vario" base mount model, you can even switch optics between rifles without re-zeroing (because the base itself can be zeroed).

I,m always looking forward to your videos. Great rifle and great caliber. I own two rifles in .222cal, a Krighoff and a Husqvarna/Krico mod. 600 and both are very accurate rifles. In fact the .222 is a better hunting cartridge than the 223. because of it,s better accuracy. Cheers!

Hi Tbj - You're ahead of the curve - no need for most of the heavy hardware for scopes - unless one is routinely rolling down hills etc... which is fine. I like the one ring solution - and no scope binding.

A very nice and interesting rifle. I seldom see anything chambered in .222 anymore. I used a similar single ring to mount an Aimpoint 9000L (7.9 inches long) on a rifle. While not as long as your scope, it still looked unconventional compared to a 2-ring mounting system, but it was certainly more than adequate for my needs.

In my opinion the Steyr-Mannlicher receiver is the most stylish one. The very first version differs in some points to the actual one. It has six locking lugs, which locks in the REAR bridge and has a circular polycarbonate magazine with a 5-cartridge capacity. The stock was a lot broader to take this magazine type, which was chosen in honor of the former Mannlicher fixed rotary magazine. The locking system has some flaws, which originated from the rear position placement and the individual small size of the 6 lugs. With heavier cartridges the bolt tends to block after the shot and so Steyr changed the system to the current more traditional position. Regardless this alterations it is a beautiful system with smooth design lines. But I still regret, that all european manufacturers went the way to short barrels, which is a dead end road in favour to cartridge development. Many greetings from Germany!

Hi Mike, I think I figured it out. This rifle is basically a wood stock version of the Scout. The ultralight, scout and Elite share a manual on the Steyr website. And I looked at disassembly videos of the scout and it has the same wedding band fluted barrel. The scout also has a huge long aluminium receiver that goes over the barrel, just with extra parts and a different shape. There’s one in 243W for sale near me and I’m debating whether to buy it. It’s nearly twice the price of a scout rifle.

Hello Mike! I picked up a 1959 MCA Steyr-Mannlicher Schoenauer- Daimler Puch (still room on the barrel for a couple more company names lol) in .243 that is a terrific rifle. That said, my thirst is not yet sated without a Steyr Mannlicher with the hammer faceted "twist" barrel. I found a beautiful Model L with what the seller refers to as a rare "sliver stock". It is a sporter stock original to the rifle that has a narrow, streamlined fore-end (not Mannlicher full stock) with a wedge-shaped rosewood cap. Viewed in profile, the fore-end tapers from full height to a point at the tip like a wedge. It has a rosewood tip and white spacer and the corners are rounded over slightly. I haven't found any references to this style stock anywhere and wonder how rare or unusual guns with that style stock are and how it affects the value.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns Thanks Mike! I uploaded a short vid of some pics of the "sliver stock" (as the seller calls it) Steyr Mannlicher Model L and sent an invite link to you. I know you're a busy guy but if you have the time, it's really an interesting rifle and a very sleek looking stock. However, it almost appears that the stock was refinished as the checkering is quite shallow as if sanded by someone who didn't know better. I guess it could be flat, European-style checkering but to my eyes, even the panel borders look a bit vague as if sanded. By comparison, my 1956 MCA has sharp, pointed checkering. You know much more than I do about these guns so any input is appreciated as I am seriously thinking of purchasing it especially since it is in .243 (same as my MCA) which is my preferred caliber. Also, keep the great videos coming. Love those European rifles and your commentary.
