Surveying a timber frame is a complex art form. You need to understand what makes a joint - how structural is the timber you are looking at? Is the timber original? What is causing damage and why? What will it cost to repair? What is causing movement? It is not hard to run up a bill for £100,000 on a timber frame - our job is to make sure that you are well informed when purchasing a new home, or get it right when specifying repairs to an existing house.

Pretty sad, but it's great that you are educating people to try and prevent this.

I would love to see the home after all the repairs are finished. I think it will end up looking amazing.

American here. Why would a homeowner call someone like you to take their home apart? Who actually pays for the restoration. Very interesting videos and great lessons on what not to do as I move toward building my own timber and lime home.

How difficult is it to prioritize repairs when you have so much going on in an old building? It's amazing that modern trades have used certain methods for preventing water ingress which have the exact opposite effect on a building! I really appreciate these videos. Are you planning any more mining videos?

I call it Tin Hat and Welly Boots - do the roof, sort the bottom - drains, walls etc - THEN do the rest. Yup - more mining vids on the way - just had to let things cool down for a while..

Love your videos. Any chance you have one on replacing an internal knee brace?

Interesting stuff. What would you use instead of lead?

Dont like lead anywhere near - just bed timber in breathable lime mortar, and angle the stone under it so water can run away. You'll get no rot. Lead just traps water and kills the timber.
Opening up an historic timber frame - many problems..
