@@pyrodactyl2 well, metal is indeed good for transfering sound but, violin needs to be "free" , adding a metal rod across the instrument is really bad since it could mute the violin since it's metal and heavy and we already have a soundpost so the problem that they want to solve is already solved, and maybe the violin with the God pillar will sounds like a cello maybe...

As a cellist, I can say from experience that different endpins sound different. Their claim that steel is brighter and tungsten is darker is spot on. The tone difference was night and day when I went from my stock steel pin to a brass Tone Acoustics pin. Endpins transfer the vibrations from the cello down to whatever the floor is, it looks like they are trying to make an equivalent thing for violins. I don't know if it would actually work or not but I can see how they got the idea.
@damshek
@damshek 3 жыл бұрын
Well sure, that would make sense in the context of bouncing the vibrations off the floor differently. Slightly less sense in the context of sticking it up an instrument that's played on the shoulder :-)

There might be a benefit from this principle for very cheap violins. Although you probably should not do this yourself and the rod does not seem to be installed in a very good manner (come on, that might just rip out!), there may be some benefits to be gained: What this basically does is to create a stiff continuation from the neck to the endpin (which does *not* touch the body of the violin otherwise (as olafs example does), which would drastically deteriorate resonance). This means that now the strings are not attached to the body of the instrument. Thereby: → If your instrument is not built well you might have a lot of resonance of the length of the instrument. This reduces the loudness of the instrument, since the string looses energy that is not picked up by the bridge. Also this can have a bad effect on the tone due to unequal dampening. A rod just like this will lead to much less resonance over the length of the instrument, thus the instrument will get a better response. → If the strings are attached to the body, they will put pressure on the sound board, thereby compessing it a bit. A good violin maker will carefully select and carve his wood for a high amount of homogenity. But if you use ill suited wood, this might affect the resonance of the wood very badly. With such a rod, the pressure will be on the neck and the rod (and importantly on the joint between neck and rod, which is just not stable enough with this thing), resulting in less lateral pressure on the soundboard. These things should not be a problem on a well built instrument, but a very cheap instrument might in fact profit from such a rod.

Notice how the video never shows actual footage of somebody playing the violin with the rod inside? The selling point is that it'll improve the sound quality but then they just show how easy to install it is as if easyness was a key point of sound quality. And I don't think that Brett and Eddy cut out sound tests from the original video, I really think that they just decided not to show the actual audible result because it sounds crappy. But even if they did film and show the sound quality, they could easily fake it: use another instrument; play the violin without the rod and claim it's inside; play poorly when it's normal and then play skillfully when the rod is allegedly installed, etc. Like, even if they'd show actual footage of someone playing, it's easily fakeable. And another observation: I'm not sure because the images of the musicians fly by so quickly but some of the guys look very similar as if they used the same people several times and edited the footage so that the images go by quickly so you can't really recknognise the faces... I'm pretty sure that the comments and installing videos are fake and/or duplicates.

To confirm Eddy and Brett's suspicion about the gender of the people in the video, me, being the nerd that I am, ran a statistical study on it. Proportion of girls in video to total: 2/29 (I think I saw two girls in the video but whatever) x=2, n=29. Since n is approx =30, we can use a one prop z int. Assuming this is representative of the whole population and that there are 9,800 people using it, independence is not violated and since 29*.4 and 29*.6 >10, conditions are not violated and we may proceed. At C=99%: (-.052, .19017) We are 99% confident that the true proportion of girls who use the godpillar is between -.052 and .1902. Since .6 is not in (and nowhere near) the interval, .6 is not a probable value for the true proportion of females who use the godpillar, which gives us some evidence that the true p of females is different for those who use the godpillar and play the violin. In other words, something's fishy about this godpillar in terms of gender....

Got to the part about the rod changing the character of the tone (steel being brighter, carbon fiber being darker). That’s actually a thing, especially with upright bass endpins. A black walnut endpin makes my upright much louder and fuller sounding than a carbon fiber, and a carbon fiber is more complex than steel. One of the tricks I learned from Chuck Traeger’s book. Now, how that translates when you skewer your violin’s guts, I have no idea. Lol
