After spending most of yesterday cleaning our laundryroom, when my husband was putting his clothes in the laundry baskets in the laundryroom last night, I called out "Did you notice the laundryroom?" Cheerfully, he replied "Yes, I did!" I asked "Did you make the appropriate oohs & ahhs ?" (LOL) He said "Yes, I did !" Gotta love it. There was too much on the floor. I found things that could be pitched, given away, things I didn't know where they were & things I'd forgotten about. Now the room has more floor space, less stuff, is a whole lot cleaner & that makes me feel better !

My easiest place was the linen closet. I had been keeping the fresh load of towels on the dining room table because the linen closet was packed. Secondary benefit after I minimized the linens, when I felt discouraged or overwhelmed, I'd open the linen closet door and see how great it is to be able to access everything and see everything so easily.

sssooo true, my parenta would often go for vacations that lasted weeks at a time (my dad's a teacher), and I would always go to their house, pick a room and make it perfect, they always loved it and raved on about how well I had done, and they had never praised me for anything in my life, ever,I have to say, it felt good, which is why I kept doing it, I suppose, but my own home is a mess, go figure!, I know what to do, I just can't seemto gather the energy to do it for myself, so I really, really need a buddy!

OMG, thank you for breaking down the steps to becoming a minimalist. I truly feel energized and not overwhelmed! What captured my attention was the idea of conquering one small area at a time before moving on to the more challenging areas in the house. I would always start with the biggest mess first and become overwhelmed. To some, a small area to conquer might mean to clean and declutter the bedroom dresser, the bedroom chair, the exercise equipment that's being used to hold clothing, etc. Nonetheless, and as you have suggested, start small, enjoy the repercussions, and keep it moving! Baby steps first which leads to giant steps later! I love it! Today, I pledge to start decluttering my bedroom and I will not give up! Thank you for inspiring us out here. Please keep those videos coming!!! -Allie

It feels amazing to unload possessions that I no longer want or need. It's a long, long and difficult story, but I am so thankful that I found your channel. It is so timely.....I can hardly believe it. AND, what's so funny or so sad, is that I bought your book months before the pandemic, never read it, and now I can't even find it but I know it is in here somewhere......under all the clutter. Since the divorce, my Mom's death(she was living with me at the time), and the car accident in which I was badly hurt, I may have to really sell my home for financial reasons; it forced me into retirement and my award won't come in time. When I got your book, wanted to just clear the clutter. But now, don't know if I should try to fix it up as much as possible, or, as a realtor friend says, just sell it as is!!! Ugh! It's not in shape and neither am I. Don't have help, or money.....if I could just refinance......would fix it up but then might not want to sell at all....but, I still might not be able to afford to live here. May have just answered my own question.

I totally agree. The very first time I heard/saw that *tidying* up one's house was the main part of the Konmari method I knew it wasn't for me. It didn't get to the heart of the problem. I'm sure intentions are good and for some people it has helped make a difference. But in the end, it doesn't matter what you do with 'too much stuff', it's still too much stuff. You can tidy all you want, clutter is clutter. You can't organize clutter, you can *only* Get Rid Of It.

Where do you start? I liked this video, also. So, from a new perspective, where can you start in any decluttering journey after you have set your goals? I suggest you start where God started. Start from the ground (Gen. 2:7) and work your way up. Since decluttering is all about you and improving the quality of your life, the ground in this case is your feet. And you might work your way upwards from there. So here is a simple list of things you need starting from the ground and working your way up. 1. Socks 2. Pair of shoes 3. Underwear 4. Pants or trousers 5. Belt 6. Shirt 7. Hat (if you're spending time outdoors and under the sun) And thanks for your videos and showing us how to keep things simple.

Get on the No Call list and the No Mail list for your area. It will greatly reduce the number of solicitations you get. Look on every piece of junk mail for the number to unsubscribe. Unsubscribe from every catalog, and mailing list that sells clutter, stores you don't go to, services you don't use or need. Stop magazine subscriptions for a while. They are at least half advertisements. Avoid watching commercials. Buy You Tube Red to stop commercials. The content creators still get paid. Avoid shopping. Avoid shopping entirely while you are decluttering. Plan ahead and don't make any unnecessary trips to the store. Get online banking and automatic bill pay for your bills. Negotiate with your debt holders to get out of debt. Try to have zero installment payments of any kind. Pay cash for things. Even big things. Especially big things. Like vehicles, education, houses, land.

The Becker Method is quite similar to what I did, the only difference is that I did it by category rather than by room. I like that you emphasize finishing the entire house. Although some people prefer a slower approach, such as The Minimalist game of 1 item on the 1st of the month, 2 on the 2nd and so on until the end of the month, I think this method of doing it all in one go is more efficient and it takes a lesser toll on your will power.

My sixth point would be to think MORE than twice about what you buy in the future. Don't buy on impulse, and go through the third degree with yourself when you are in the store. For example, most kitchen gadgets are entirely unnecessary, and you can cook all the same dishes with what you already have. I say this because it's in the kitchen where I could really go on a mad spending spree. For me now, a new piece of kitchen equipment would really have to earn its keep in terms of the space it takes up and the washing-up it creates.
@SpeakTruthBeKind4 ай бұрын
When it comes to a new purchase of kitchen equipment I recently heard someone say that they look at the cost of the item, think as to if they own another item that would do the job and if not consider how many times they would use it and apply the value of $1.00 per use…if the item costs say $100.00 would they use it 100 times? That helps me some with decisions. 😉❤

I didn't know I was being minimalist when I started 2 years ago. Now I'm doing everything more intentionally. I still feel sometimes that "the house will eat me", I just fell so small in the middle of everything. Now I'm starting over again. The worse part is the toys and kid's clothes that I keep because I have one baby that will use everything again and I maybe will have one more in about 2 years. I'm a little bit lost with those kids things. Another thing is that I discovered that I don't love most of my things, so I'm changing them, buying new and really good stuff and replacing the old and not so good ones.

I need advice. At Christmas and birthdays i get given too much stuff but i dont want to seem rude. I sound ungrateful but i hate it i dont need stuff but family and friends dont listen. Do i hv to feel so guilty when i send it all to charity without touching any of it

You absolutely don't have to feel bad about donating unwanted stuff. I buy anything that I definitely need or want - because I have a tiny house - and life is too short to spend surrounded by dozens of scented candles, soaps and bric a brac. Also, I have allergies that make it impossible for me to use any highly-scented items! Many of these unnecessary gifts are the result of givers' guilt in that some people feel an obligation to provide a present - no matter how random! I call this the 'supermarket dash' method of giving. The result is that the givers' sense of obligation is passed directly on to you. You can only release yourself by donating it to a good cause that'll find someone who is actually going to need or like it. A total win-win situation! I had a good talk with my family last year -and the agreement is that we are happy with nothing at all , but if they insist on gifting, we'll only accept items that we can eat or drink - because they'll only be temporary 'residents' and can be shared with visitors. You must never feel obliged to hold on to things that you didn't ask for - because time with family and friends is far more precious than 'stuff'.😉 If you explain your position and still get overwhelmed with unwanted items- then you have done your best . If people still want to waste their money - it is not your responsibility.😇

I’ve had two seemingly competing urges - to both collect and practice minimalism: ying/yang, do each with a bang?

Greg Gonzales, I've been watching reruns of Hoarders & I'm hoping it will convince me to collect less & declutter more. But first I have to check out an auction thats on in a couple of weeks. They might have something I need. Take care & stay safe.

Hi Joshua I have a question for you If you have a decluttered messy home that it's got more stuff for an army and you're overwhelmed because your health won't let you do but very little at a time What do you suggest

I became a minimalist in 2017 and got rid of about 80 percent of our stuff. I cleared out our 3 bedroom house, 2 floors and full basement. My husband commented on how his thoughts are clearer and he is less anxious. My problem now is my husband is refusing to tackle his books. He has 6 FULL bookshelves that are cluttering my thoughts when I walk by them. Thankfully they are in the basement, but they take up a full length wall and a bit. I have threatened, shamed, reminded him that when he dies I will be throwing them all out so he might as well help me now, but nothing works. I can almost see the empty wall and how beautiful this would be, but alas he has to do this one. Thanks for all your videos. I actually just found your teachings 2 days ago and had never heard of you before. I look forward to the day that my husband finally realizes that if he tackles this stronghold in his life, he will be much freer. Thanks again.

I’ll have more time to play with my five year old. She always says mommy you never have time to play. My response is I have to clean and it never ends!

Thank you Joshua. So clear, and insightful. I just have to apply it now.. wish me luck. Im fighting myself over whether " to get rid of" or "keep". This indecision freezes me, and prevents me from tackling the more difficult rooms. It sorta takes a " practise" to learn this new way. Does that make sense?🇦🇺😏❓

I struggled like u. Instead of figuring out what to get rid of, I take out my favorites first. The stuff I love. Now what’s left over is what I decide to get rid of or donate. If I’m stuck I put it in a box and place in basement for 30 days. If I don’t need it they go to a donation store.

I have a hard time getting rid of things so I mainly just move it out of my living space to experience the benefits. Also I am poor so I "shop" from my own stuff... If I think I need something I go through what I have to find something I can use.

Get rid of the obvious stuff first. Then as you revisit the area in a month, you'll find more things you don't need. As time goes by, you'll find it easier to say goodbye to things.
