I'm not a professional, just a DIY home type. My suggestions are to bevel the edges, clean off the mill scale, and use the correct size rods. 1/16" electrodes are NOT what I'd use for 3/16" stock. I'm sure you'd have a much easier time with 1/8" or even 3/32 on it. I usually use my mig for most of the non-structural welding, but I know that the stick is better for heavier work.

You are correct. I realized the same things after this.
