Just being Informative Hope this Helps Somebody That may want to know more before they weld Stainless steel is a metal alloy that has elements added to steel which make it rust and corrosion resistant. These alloys also influence the ability to weld, cut, grind, drill and perform other machining and assembly work to it. Stainless steels are similar but have different properties. Stainless steels with similar characteristics are grouped together. In general, stainless steels are harder and more corrosion resistant than carbon steel. Stainless Steel Adding chromium and nickel to carbon steel is what makes steel stainless. These elements inhibit corrosion and rust. Manufactures also add elements such as molybdenum, manganese, vanadium, carbon and silicon. This mix of components makes up the three digit numbering system that identifies stainless steel. 200-Series Stainless Steel This series of stainless steel has 17-percent chromium, 4-percent nickel and 7-percent manganese added to steel. The 200-series steels have an austenitic structure. This refers to the crystal structure of the material. Austenitic stainless steels have a higher chromium and nickel content. Austenitic stainless steels weld easier than other stainless steels. This metal is magnetic after heating. 300-Series Stainless Steel The 300 series has 18-percent chromium and 8-percent nickel added to the steel. Stainless steel with this mix uses 18-8 as its name as well as the 300-series number. These steels aren’t attracted to magnets. This is an austenitic stainless steel, so it is easier to weld than some other stainless steels. It can be made magnetic. The 304 grade is the most commonly used stainless steel, and the 316 grade is the second most common. Both have the same general characteristics of the 300 series. Tableware, cooking utensils, food processing equipment, food preparation and mild chemical applications use this stainless steel. 400-Series Stainless Steel This group of stainless steels has an addition of 11 percent chromium and 1-percent manganese. The 400 series is susceptible to rust and corrosion under some conditions. Heat-treating will harden the 400 series. The 400 series of stainless steels have a martensitic crystalline structure that has higher carbon content. This provides high strength and high wear resistance. The welds will deteriorate as the carbon content increases. Martensitic stainless steels aren’t as corrosion resistant as the austenitic types. 600-Series Stainless Steel These grades are approximately 17-percent chrome and approximately 4- to 7-percent nickel. Manufacturers make the 600 series of stainless steel in both martensitic and austenitic. The 601 through 619 versions are martensitic, while 630 through 635 are both semiaustenitic and martensitic. The 650 through 665 versions are austenitic. These steels are strong; the aircraft industry uses some grades of the 600 series. Both D2 tool steel and stainless are steel alloys that have some common properties. They are similar metals, but each has a different alloy composition and they have different uses. D2 Tool Steel D2 tool steel is semi-stainless because it has a high chromium content. D2 also has high carbon content that makes it hard. D2 doesn’t abrade and scratch easily, and wears well. It is used to make tools. D2 tool steel is used to make dies that requires close tolerances, cutting properties and long life. Stainless Steel To qualify as stainless steel, the chromium content must be at least 10 percent. Stainless steel commonly has nickel and other elements added for other characteristics. This alloy has low carbon content. Stainless steel classifications have several different grades, depending on the alloy composition. The major uses for stainless steel are those that require corrosion-resistant material. D2 vs. Stainless The main difference between the two materials is the higher amount of carbon in D2, which increases brittleness. Because stainless steel has nickel in its composition, it will resist corrosion better than D2 tool steel. Steel is generally referred to as "carbon" steel, because it is a combination of iron atoms interspersed with carbon atoms. The overall structure of steel is a crystalline lattice comprising both elements, which provides steel with a combination of strength and ductility. Adding other alloys such as chromium and aluminum gives steel more properties such as protection against rust and lighter weight and durability.

Hi! Just watched this video for the first time. Good video. The adjustable tool you were using is known as a podger. This tool has a long tapered round end which can be used to insert into 2 holes on separate plates to line them up before inserting a bolt. The tapered end suits most general hole diameters. I used a podger mostly to line up holes on two flanged steel beams when I was involved in structural steel fabrication.

After you weld stainless steel, it WILL rust, get some passivation acid citric acid from a welding supply or a supplier of stainless steel sheet metal. It will rust because of the iron on the surface, once you PASSIVATE the stainless steel, that burns off the surface iron, , wash it, dry it, then let it sit in the air for 24 hrs so the protective oxide layer will reform from the air. Then it should be ready 😃😃😃 GREAT VIDEO. Thanks William Orange County California.

2:55 ...so what do you think of this comment by Abrasive Guy: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eHize6eKgNKAgq8&lc=UgwqIvNVdB2ezV6Ky8R4AaABAg in particular, "Using diamond on metal, you get carbon transfer. You increase the carbon content of whatever you are cutting = bad bad bad!" and " Lastly on this point, do not use it on stainless steel. Heat distortion and cross-contamination will break the chrome bond that makes stainless steel and cause rust. Big no-no!" (but maybe read the whole comment for context).
@BrandonLund3 жыл бұрын
Im guessing "Abrasive Guy" is a fan of abrasive wheels vs diamond wheels. We can all be convinced our way is best if that's the product we are selling or rooting for but unless your doing critical work, cut it using whatever tool you have on hand or prefer, diamond wheel, bandsaw or abrasive. It really doesn't matter either way. There is a ton of information online that encourages cutting stainless with diamond. It's not something I created or made up. As far as increasing carbon content being a "big no no". You won't increase the carbon content anywhere near the carbon content of cast iron and I've proven cast iron can easily be welded with standard mig wire which is almost as strong as unbroken cast iron. Most will tell you that's a big no no too. That's the difference between practical and real world. Cut the stainless with whatever you have. It will be fine.

Can I do this if I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express?

You can but it's not advisable. Your going to want to get a permit first LOL 😁🤣

Whats the difference between stick and mig welding and what are the benefits of one over the other? Some say its good outside but so is gasless flux core mig wire.

Stick in my opinion is great all around because its simple and basic. A power supply and an electrode. It can be used inside, outside and has great penetration and great for welding thin to very thick steel. Flux core has moving parts and consumables to replace but its fast. Pull the trigger and go until your machine hits its duty cycle or you run out of wire, which ever comes first.
