Stick welding tips for stainless steel. I managed to get some stainless steel pipe so I can do some walking the cup type tig welding, some mig welding, and some stainless stick welding on some flanges. But first, i need some practice so I set up a fillet weld on a 45 degree angle and stacked several beads for practice.

very good videos , you have a skill at explanation that others lack, you tell us what your going to show us first , such an important rule violated by so many, you also anticipate the errors of others and expound on the topic , you may not realize your doing it but some people have to be taught your skill of explanation , your welding skills are of the charts as well

Very informative video on SS stick welding. I have found that the Lincoln E7018AC [special rods to run on small AC welders] operate very much like the Lincoln family of stainless steel electrodes...they seem to have the same coating formulation, unlike the standard E7018's which operate very differently, in my opinion. It has long been known that the EXXX-16 SS rods run super on AC only welders; as far as arc starting and restarting, though DC+ is best.

your comments about SS stick rod start amps and heat up remind me that when I have a brand new student that is totally spooked trying to strike an arc, flinging "fire" everywhere, I give them a couple of SS rods until they "settle down" a bit. SS is hard to stick and easy to restrike compared to 6010 or 6011 for the brand new first time welder. Sometimes a couple of SS rods is all it takes to give them a little confidence and calm the nerves. This flies straight in the face of management, who seem to think that trainees ought to be only given "junk" to practice with.

hey friend i would like to point out that when welding ss you also may need to keep your electrode close to your work as ss is a 2.5 on the copper standerd chart copper is 100 so the conductive power of stainless steel is a lousy 2.5 % this is also why it gets so hot copper has a thermal conductivity of 4 and ss is only [.16 ] so the heat really lingers

thats really cool mate. I work in ship yard and do a fair bit of SS work. Its all done with stick, mainly replacement hull section stringer and rib repairs or external hull bash/drag plates and fender pipe. I normally spot (continuous stop start tacks, almost looks like a stack of dimes) all my verticals so we get one pass 6/8mm fillets with no undercut. Ive tried continuous runs but always get undercut and/or weld pool melting into drops. Ill try the J tomorrow . thanks

Thanks Jody for another nice video. Stick welding stainless is relatively simple on flat but become a lot harder out of position! If I can suggest you something, you can talk about the different between -15, -16, -17 rod. I've tried a couple of brand of stainless rod and it's not like 7018 (who almost burn the same between brand). Stainless rod are very different from one to another. Have a great day. Francis

At about the 2:30 mark, it shows the pass after the slag has come off, but there is still slag stuck on the right (top) toe of the bead. I had a very similar problem when I was running some 1/8" 308L-16 electrodes in the horizontal position doing a series of U's; the slag on the top toe was an absolute bear to get off when the vast majority of slag peeled on its own. It took quite some time pecking at it with a file trying to get it off and I still don't think I was able to get it all. Any idea as to the cause or this? Is it caused by the rod manipulation or is it just the nature of the beast when running stainless electrodes? Great videos, by the way!!

Hi Jody, I am trying to decide on a nice tig welder to buy. I've narrowed it down to either the everlast 200dx or the 210ext, but looking online i cannot see clearly what either machines get shipped with as far as a remote pedal or not. Also the 200dx says not intended for e6010 use??? Could you mabey explain if you know much about it. Also it said must have 65000 watt clean power supply?? Will i be able to run either machines out of my garage at home with standard 240 or 120? Also is the 210ext worth the extra $? Thanks for your time you put into your videos i've learned so much you are an inspiration to all.

I personally love the way stainless rods weld. I wish normal carbon steel rods welded the same, or at least I haven't found one that does. Regardless, it makes a rookie like me, produce some of the nicest looking welds you can get. I wish they weren't so expensive or I would weld with them as much as possible, when allowed that is.

It's interesting that the heat transfers up the rod so much on stainless. I know that on reinforced concrete floor slabs of high-rise buildings up north where the floor includes open air balconies, there is a problem with the balconies acting as cooling fins with the floors inside the building being very cold because heat transfers out to the balconies through the re-bar in the slab. They counteract this with the re-bar being thermally broken with a foot-long fused-in section of stainless steel rebar at the building wall between internal steel re-bar and outdoor steel re-bar. They do this because Stainless *doesnt* transfer heat as much as regular rebar. ...So,, I'm scratchin' my head here.
@ZacharyMelo
@ZacharyMelo 5 жыл бұрын
It's that it builds up, as the heat rises into the rod. With SS being such a poor conductor, it doesn't move the heat out an into the stick holder or workpiece. As the stick gets smaller, the heat has accumulated into a smaller area. Even ceramic will become hot, given enough thermal input - despite being an excellent insulator. Everything is a conductor given the right conditions.

I've welded in that position on a butt joint on a 45° angle open root with 6010 & 7018 going uphill. A combination of vertical and horizontal in which I personally call "VERTIZONTAL". I even welded a butt joint open root on a 45° angle and got that plate I had to weld the whole thing uphill with 7018 including the root, yes, THE ROOT. My first couple of plates on the root looked looked dog shit, but with practice I've gotten the hang of it. Oh, then there's the fun part, welding a butt joint on a 45° angle on the ground that's tack welded to the bottom of my work station table. Being the only female in class, I didn't complain, I would rather weld something that's fixed to where you can't move it and have to work around it, than to get comfortable welding something on a table. That's why when I weld, I stand up, I don't sit in a chair if working on a table. My first time welding on the ground was challenging but after while I've gotten the hang of it and used to it to where I don't mind doing it. I try to tell kids in class that out in the field, there's not gonna be any tables and chairs, u gotta put yourself in positions to work around whatever it is you're welding. I've had instructors that got allot of field experience and they've shared their field experiences to the class and make those into helpful advice that can be useful when my comes to go out into the field to weld and I share that advice to new kids starting out learning to weld. Lincoln electric makes good products, I like their Excaliburs, 5Ps,and 5p+ 6010s, their mig wires after good too and I like their machines.

@spoofer20

Stainless is a harder material, so engineers have to take that into consideration. Stainless will shatter before softer metals will. Also making a bridge out of stainless steel would cost 20 times of a normal bride, it wouldnt really outweigh the maintenance costs.

Castolin (previously Eutectic) 680s are touted as a special rod that welds pretty much any steel to any other steel...they weld great but i think they are very similar to 312 stainless in composition. generic 312 stainless rods are way cheaper and work darn near as well.

Thank you for your reply. I used a lot these rods (1.6 / 2.5 mm) for the manufacture of tools or re welds on frame bike. The welds are beautiful and very durable. Here in France they are very expensive, but the performance is excellent!weldingtipsandtricks
