In this video we start our stickhandling drill progression with a soft touch drill. This stickhandling drill is one of the most important drills a player can do because it trains the hands to be fast and soft. This is the basis of almost every other move.

The tip you gave about rolling the puck off the back of your blade is by far the best stick handling tip for any hockey player. I'd advise everyone to work on that technique and you'll see immediate results.

Thanks, I have to give credit where it's due. I first heard that from BelfryHockey It made instant sense and I found it was a great way to get the point across while coaching and instructing.

Great tip about the top hand doing most of the work. I see a lot of the kids I train having a bottom dominate hand when stick handling. Hard to get them to understand the concept, but once they do it makes a world of difference.

Cannot put into words how grateful I am for you guys doing all these awesome videos. I'm 23 years old and in grad school, but I LOVE HOCKEY. Since obviously there aren't many opportunities as a 23 year old beginner to join any teams or get coaching time, I ended up joining an adult development league. Your videos have helped me drastically and I always train at home or whenever Im on the ice. Unfortunately I'm from New York, and not the area with too many outdoor hockey rinks, so Im really confined strictly to the indoor ice rink. However, with your help I have drastically improved my overall gameplay. Thank you guys very much. You guys are really doing an awesome job.

Must have been minus 20 when this was filmed. A true sense of the real Outdoor Classic. Good introduction to stickhandling and lessons to learn. As always, a clear specific example of what can be taken to the ice for practice, practice and more practice. The Kane reference puts the importance of the soft touch into perspective.

What tips can you give a younger adult who's just getting into the sport about feeling discouraged? I went to a stick and puck today at a local arena and the place was full of kids who've obviously been playing since before they could walk and i felt like i couldn't do a thing so I got off the ice after 15 minutes. Any suggestions? I also didn't know the local schools were on break this week; so that probably played into this

Depends if your goal is to play hockey casually or if you are in it to push yourself and see how much you can improve I guess. If just casual, then just go out there and have a good time. People aren't actually judging you as much as you might think they are. First things first for improvement tips, how good are you at skating?

Hey, I normally use my right hand for writing e.t.c but i use a right stick for 5 years. i was never aware of what each hand was supposed to do before your videos and sadly, i realized that i use my bottom hand for twisting the stick what do you suggest? Teach my top hand(which is left ) to do the right thing or get used to a left stick ? i think getting used to a left stick would be really challenging. By the way. Thanks your videos help a lot.
@CoachJeremy
@CoachJeremy 9 жыл бұрын
Yeah stick with what you're doing, but focus on the top hand controlling the stick. You can put a toilet paper tube on the shaft and hold it with your bottom hand (or PVC pipe) so you can't grip the stick too tight.
@Jurvay
@Jurvay 9 жыл бұрын
Personally I would say to practice with a left stick. It'll be like starting all over again so it might take a while, but ultimately it would probably be worth it in the end. The use of your dominant hand is so important to nearly every aspect of hockey. As a right-handed guy who shoots left, I can't imagine myself being as good at stick-handling, shooting, or passing if I were to learn how to shoot right from the beginning, simply because I'm a righty. Try it out for a bit, practice with a lefty stick for a few hours or days or whatnot and see if anything starts to feel more natural. Happy clappin

I'm 10 months late to the question, but maybe someone else will find this useful. I was once in the same boat, discovering way late that right-handed doesn't automatically (or even usually) mean right shooter. In my case, it so happened that I found this out during a 9 yr. hiatus from playing hockey, so I played 5 years as a righty, had the break, and when I started playing again, thought maybe it would be a perfect time to try lefty since it had been so long anyway. My experiment lasted maybe 5-6 games (including pick-up). Maybe lefty would have been better if starting from scratch (or if I was naturally ambidextrous), but with 5 yrs experience and muscle memory as a righty, the drop-off in my skill trying to switch was too big to stick with it. I still wonder how much the "wrong" hand on top hurts my game, but trying to switch after 5 years of doing it that way felt even more wronger.

how did you get so good and what age did you start
@CoachJeremy
@CoachJeremy 9 жыл бұрын
I started when I was 4 or 5 years old. I got a lot better in my teens when I became more curious about hockey, which then lead to my improvement, and later my desire to teach others. In order to improve you need to play a lot of hockey and have focused practice time working on specific skills. The more time you play and practice, the better you will get. Knowing what to practice helps make your practice time more effective.

Isn't your top hand awful close to your hip in some of those clips?
@CoachJeremy
@CoachJeremy 9 жыл бұрын
It can be close to the hip, we just don't want the habit of it being glued to the hip, or beside the body. During a game the position will change depending on the situation. For example when I'm dangling the line of pucks I end up going faster than my hands, so to compensate I bring the stick in a bit closer to my body so I can dangle the last few pucks.
