You got to start small. Then, as you progress, add more. Practice stick handling stationary. Look at the puck a few minutes, then lift head. Start stick handling with dominant hand 5 minutes. Then your other hand 5 minutes. Then, use both hands. Keep bottom hand very loose. You can set up a pattern with cones or objects in a tick tack toe pattern. Start doing basic stickhandling pattern 5 minutes each hand. Then 5 minutes together. Once you develop Start walking and stick handle. Then, after a while, start running while stick handling. There's stick handling drills you can watch. Also, exercise videos to watch for hockey for constioning.

These videos are incredibly great - for all ages & skill levels too. I get a lot out of them and I’m an adult playing since age 7. But I have one question for the creators of this vid. Looks like ur in Toronto. Is that the Bellwoods rink? Christie Pitts, maybe? I thought I recognized it. Or maybe Dufferin Grove? Just curious, eh, lol. BTW these outdoor rinks that pepper the Toronto city landscape are literally THEE best place to visit if you want to play free shinny - age 16 and over in the evening/15 and under earlier. There’s always al least a few really good kids playing among the group- the rest are generally all decent and competent. If your low skill level it’s a great way to pick up your game because all are welcome. AND, they’re also fantastic places to try out some of the drills and techniques that these iTrain videos show you. Many rinks have an additional pad next to the hockey pad that’s for skating only, if you want to work that, or just pleasure skate. It’s serious practice for many of these kids who are all playing on competitive teams, trying to grow in their skills, but nonetheless, one can never separate the fun out of it. No ones mean or anything. Lots of laughs, lots of camaraderie, great sportsmanship, and of course, the magic that seems to consistently permeate from of the flow of this amazing sport. Good times. Great memories! And thanks again for this iTrain videos.

I started doing stick-handling exercises about one year ago, from a very low base. It is obvious that repetition is the key to ingraining these motor patterns into one's memory. I would guesstimate that it takes about 3-5,000 times per exercise, including on-ice, and off-ice to be reasonably proficient at doing the movements in an amateur game level. As an aside, shooting 25,000 pucks makes one quite good at doing wrist shots from a low skill base. Repetition, repetition, repetition.

You’re absolutely right… countless hours.. countless.. on rollers with a green biscuit at the tennis court.. and a dozen skates at the ice rink (both open practice and pick up) and wrist shots are only just starting to click. Lmao. Not to mention the endless education via youtube coaches. As an adult hockey has an insane learning curve. Very challenging but also rewarding if you have the time/ access to rinks. Wish I had started as a kid but better late than never. Stuck in kuwait for a couple more months before I can get back home and get more ice time

5% of the population is left handed, but 20% of hockey players play left handed. Grab a couple of cheap sticks, one of each, and decide whether you like your right hand at the top (left handed stick), or your left hand at the top (right handed stick). There's no correct answer, it's all about what feels comfortable to you. Good luck!

@rh71
@rh71 2 жыл бұрын
The game in large part is muscle memory so you have to practice at the speed you want to play at. A lot of moves can be done without even looking at the puck, just to prove the point. The best players constantly push themselves to do things at faster speed to improve where they're at. You must do the puck handling repetition at game speed.

I have a few questions if anyone can help me out. I'm a decent skater but my progress is limited because I can't properly crossover without my ankles kinda bending. I can can also stop on my strong side, what can I do to to strengthen my left side?
@Tandem22
@Tandem22 7 жыл бұрын
Just practice man. Exaggerate your knee bend. Next time you play pickup, make it a point to stop on your weak side 10 times, then 15 times, etc... then it will just become natural. I remember first starting and had to do that until eventually I was surprising myself when I would stop on my off side without even thinking about it. Your cross overs, again, exaggerate that knee bend, your ankles are bending because your knees probably aren't bent enough. It may feel like they are, but have someone record you, you will probably be standing nearly straight up.
