Being a musician myself (keyboards/guitar) and having been in at least a dozen bands from 1971-1992, I left the biz in my early 30's for a more lucrative and steady/career after dealing with petulant, narcissistic, moody, back-stabbing, and flakey types. There was a commonality I observed that the drummers were always the logical, introspective, self-aware, cerebral and most leveled-headed among all of the instrumentalists. In fact, of all the bands I was in, the drummers have been the ones I've remained friends with after all these years. That said, everyone of these gentlemen here were considered true legends if not "Gods" among the musicians I played with. ToP, Santana, Azteca, RTF, Sly, Herbie...and these cats were KEY components to their sound and success. Their contribution to the music world is incalculable. BTW, I heard that Shrieve was recently hospitalized and underwent surgery. I hope he's doing ok.

Wow these stories are amazing. The famed “Philly Joe lick” from the Riley book is due to Philly pawing the drums! The truth is stranger than fiction. Love to hear it tho this is an amazing pod for drum nerds. Musicians don’t tell the truth enough this is great!

once I was rehearsing in brooklyn and my snare was miising a lug so the trumpet player, Calvin said, I know a drummer in the building, I'll be right back. It was Grady tate's snare drum!!!!!!!!! I ran up the stairs when I got home & told my dad I played Grady Tates snare drum!!!! Loving these

Not sure if it's wisdom earned with age, or something thats always been there, I'm in awe of the sense of community, lack of ego, and openness these gentlemen illustrate. Every craft, art, discipline can learn from this. Legends!

Dennis’s story about the rap artists hating each other and the brawls on the tourbus reminds me of something I recently heard about Duke Ellington’s arguably greatest band with Ben Webster etc., and that those guys despised each other, yet had to basically live together days, nights… Sounds miserable. And yet, they came up with some of the greatest music. And hip-hop artists, it’s not my thing, but they are doing something artistically valid and powerful and meaningful, just the whole scene is filled with rivalries and macho energy.

Love this, and thank you for your amazing contributions to all of us people of the drum! My son is a RAP-Hip hop artist, and says he is a poet who expresses his art through Rap and Hip Hop (Now some cross over to new pop). When I think of the Beat Generation, those New York and Chicago clubs featured the spoken word and a guy on the bongos hitting the poetry hard. The definition of RAP is "Rythm and Poetry"

Went ,to a clinic one time .In a High School of all places ,must have been late 90's.Well ,it was Lenny White ........and Louie 'Bellson' -Ya. The ,real effect and uniqueness of it . They spent the whole time on Stage -"Talking" .Did not play for 5 minutes. This is what Drummers Need the most . Forget about Chops , dbl . bass ass dribble, and chocolate chip spashes.Learn from listening .Was ,the best Clnic if that what it was ,that I can recall.Peace.

The worst is the robot music where basically non-musicians rely on a complete tune made by algorhythmic software presets with no human talent, skill, inventiveness or creativity. I call it Fake Music !!!
