He's among those who never was into comics until the boom, then saw making videos as an opportunity. It's essentially a video production gig, with ads, and that's all it is. The guy knows nothing about comic books. I've noticed other channels who did this stopped making videos, but as long as the YT algo promotes him and he cashes on ad revs, he'll be there, trying to drive views, and he's not alone in this fairly new phenomenon. It runs the gamut of niches one can think of.

Collecting and speculation channels (with a few exceptions ) are not typically my lane, but occasionally these morons--Swagglehaus, Comics As Investments-- who only talk about comics like they are dealing with the stock market pop up on my feed. As do drama queens like Sticky Goose and Jerno, where every title is about how the sky is falling, worst comics shops, and being "shadow banned" from conventions. No wonder I can't stomach them. Anyway, considering how long I've followed comics, my collection is relatively small and almost every comic I own is because of the art or the nostalgia. Every comic I buy currently is because of the art. Of course, you can occasionally buy a duplicate or something that may have or accrue value. Not only is it part of the fun, but flipping one book just facilitates you buying something else you like more. That said, I can't think of a time I ever bought a comic I hated (one that had hideous art or content) solely for the purpose of making money off of it. I just can't bring myself to put comics like that in my collection even temporarily. So, of course this guy Sticky Goose is wrong and his argument is so utterly brain dead I doubt even he believes it. He's just farming views with faux controversy and sacrificing his credibility in the process.

@@andrewb-e8l Talking about prices, good deals, great scores, whatever is all just fine. I'm happy to do that too. But the channels I'm referring to barely distinguish comics from commodities--pork futures, oil prices, etc.--and not only do they not care about the artform but depending on how influential they are, they may actually affect prices of so-called "hot comics" making them pricier than they have any right to be. Remember speculation is what destroyed thousands of comics retailers in the 90's and damaged the industry in a way that it has never fully recovered since. Mostly this new wave of specs are just carpetbaggers who latched onto comics only after comic book movies made them palatable and popular.

Financial speculation has definitely increased collecting comics by multiples of what it was 50 years ago. The same can be said for the original art. Much of those interior pages aren't selling for thousands because they are outstanding works of art. It's all about the name recognition and what people are willing to pay in the future. It will be interesting to see what demand a lot of these books will have once prices start dropping on many of the post-1970's comics.

For most collectors of any kind the price/money aspect is always a factor. It keeps certain collectibles out Of reach for those who don't have enough money. Even with reprints the economic reality of scarcity, supply and demand, combined with market dynamics for better or worse creates a critical element to any collecting endeavor. Maybe when we have replicators and perfected simulated realities will a post scarcity economy be realized. As far as our current reality goes the market forces create limitations to every kind of collecting and investment. Watch the original video and see how many other points SG makes. It isn't so simplistic as is being made out here. Bring up actual points that SH makes and refute them instead of not posting in context or providing the fullness of his positions...which you pretty much agreed to in the first 2 minutes. The fact that you indicate at the 2:05 mark that value is about 50% of the importance to you kind of proves his point.

To be fair, based on your own comments, StickyGoose is 50% correct, not a 100% wrong. If, as you say, 50% of the people collect for financial reasons, then he is partially correct. I do tend to agree, that a large segment of the collector market is in it solely for turning a profit. I see them on a regular basis at shows and conventions. There is nothing necessarily wrong with that either other than it helped drive up prices for books. I usually separate the collector from the reader. One buys for the enjoyment of the book for one reason or another, the other for investment. My cousin who got me into comics 45+ years ago is strictly a reader, he buys dozens of new comics every month and is my go-to source for researching what books may be interesting to me. I am strictly more of of a completionist collector, trying to reach back in time to purchase the books of my youth and to finish runs. I typically read the digitized versions of these older books to keep me from opening and damaging them. and yes I hate slabs. I would only use a slab to preserve my golden age books but the way the grading companies are now, it's not worth my time anymore to bother.
@timreierson26Ай бұрын
You are taking Sticky Goose too seriously. He purposely stirs the pot to get people like you to react. Yes he gets a lot of views because he is intentionally controversial. But he is doing these videos tongue in cheek. He doesn’t really believe what he is saying. He knows perfectly well that collectors buy comics for other reasons than making money. But he is smart in that he knows if he makes a strong assertion that will spur a comic community reaction, he will get a lot of clicks and people will talk about him on their own channels which will drive more eyeballs to his site. Very shrewd marketing tactic.
