Thank you for this video -- very helpful and informative! I sometimes use Minwax Polycrylic "varnish" as a stiffener when a well-fulled felt isn't quite firm enough. I use a foam brush to spread a thin layer of the Polycrylic over the surface of the felt and work the product into the felt surface. Shape as desired and let dry for 12 hours or more. The Polycrylic does a good job of stiffening felt without changing the visual appearance, but it does change the hand (the feel) of the felt. I put the Polycrylic on the surface that won't be handled as much, so the piece stays as natural feeling as possible.

I've used spray starch on a hat I made recently with steam from the iron, while still damp. Still feels soft. I live in the UK and there was only one brand in the store I went to. I have also used it for the inside of my vessels and it does make a difference.

when and where are your online classes? do you ever show how to make a cowboy hat?
@TieDyeQueen5 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! I am thinking about trying Odicoat on the inside of a hat, once I'm sure I get it fulled enough. I think it would be great on the soles of house slippers too! I'm also very excited about the starch! I am so happy that you mentioned the odors of all the things too; I also have those issues.
@LivingFelt5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! If you check out Odicoat...definitely try on a sample before a hat. The fiber does NOT feel soft any more, this would be uncomfortable next to the skin. The fiber becomes rigid and what was once soft is now 'not". Starch may be all you need.

Really enjoyed your presentation on stiffening felt. I made a ceramic lamp and the bulb inside gets the whole piece very hot. What bulb do you recommend for a felted piece???
@LivingFelt5 жыл бұрын
Hi Terry, thank you for your note! These days, we use LED everywhere we can. They are now readily available in the bulb section, and you can get blue light or warmer tones. They put out a LOT less heat. We LED flood lights throughout our new building light fixtures, and use them in all of our lamps. Great light output with less energy consumption and less heat.

I saturated a crocheted doily I made over 10 years ago, in Aileen's Fabric Stiffener, It is still reasonably stiff despite being packed in boxes off and on over the years,m and still has NOT yellowed at all. ( I've only used Modge Podge as glue on a paper collage and it's a bit yellowed, though I probably applied to much to begin with and it's wrinkled and hiding in my closet. where it will stay *L*

Would PaverPol be the equivalent to Aileene's? As in 50:50 mix for the same hand? Would it still be bendable at 1:3 dilution? ...Is there a reason PaverPol wasn't included?
@LivingFelt5 жыл бұрын
There was a reason Paverpol was not included = it has proven to have very sporadic availability in the USA, and we DO think Aileene's is comparable for this purpose, while also being far less expensive.

Never thought I could stiffen felt! What did you use under the hat to iron on? Was that a metal coffee can, or some sort of head form? Ironing on a coffee can...would put an unwanted ridge around the top of the hat?

The hat was stiffened on a hat block. The autumn leaf vessel was shaped over a kitchen storage container...we put a quilting square on it to prevent the iron from touching the plastic :)

I was excited to see that you were testing different products to stiffing fabric, but I was sadly disappointed to see that plaster was not tested. Woodland Scenics has a product called Shaper Sheet. It is essentially felt on a very hard aluminum that can be molded into any shape. You can leave it as is and paint it, or you use their Shaper Sheet plaster to harden it. What I want to try is using my own extra strength aluminum, attach my own felt and then plaster it. But, I was hoping to find a video where someone has already experimented with this technique. That being said, your techniques are very intriguing and I am sure I can find another project where I can use them.

The gelatin recipe I use is as follows: Recipe for Gelatin Stiffener 2.5 tsp. powdered beef gelatin (or Knox unflavored gelatin) 1/2 cup + 2 Tbsp. of warm/hot (not boiling) water Mix 2 Tbsp. hot water with powdered gelatin till dissolved, then add remaining 1/2 cup hot water. To apply, put mixture into a spray bottle and spray to the INSIDE of the vessel (as the gelatin can leave a bit of unwanted sheen; can use toothbrush to brush off sheen a bit once dry). Less is more. So apply one light coat while vessel is still wet/damp (in the drying stage). If you want more stiffness, you can apply another coat when dry.

Hey, thanks for the video! I do have a tiny criticism. I was directed here from the "bowl" felting video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/foDNp4iwasdlebc&ab_channel=LivingFelt The technique you show there is for needle felting, but you used all those products in this video on wet felted items (except the butterfly, but that is "only" 2D). I wish you would have shown the effect on a 3D needle felted item as well to show the effect it has there. Keep up the great work. I appreciate you! (and one day I will find out what I am doing wrong in regards to wet felting...)
