Thanks as always for the excellent information. Haven't worked with felts much yet, but I have one or two on my Christmas list and am hopeful I'll be able to give it a try in 2023!

No argument here that our merino wools are the best for anything! Petershams are a great company!

Combed means the wool fibers- strands, were combed in one direction. Whereas, typical felt is carded into a jumbled roving. I’m a spinner getting into hat making.

Hi, Another great video with lots of information. Did I understand it correctly that the "regular wool" felt and the Merino wool are interchangeable, please? Will the texture of the felt look and feel the same between the two? Reason I'm asking is that I have a ready made hat (that's to big for me) that is almost completely smooth on the outside, and I really like the look of it. Hmm, maybe it's polished. Can you you even do that? I'll have to go back to your stiffening video though because it's gone all soft and floppy on me. I really like my hat for cold weather, but as I said it's way to big. Can you steam it up, put on a poupee head in the right size and have it shrink down as it cools? Anyway, thank you for this lesson in felts. Yours, Ann

Hi there Ilona, I am an Australian hand knitter/spinner and potentially fibre artist. I have been knitting for seven+ decades having taken instruction from my much loved but of course now so sadly deceased grandma. Over a somewhat shorter extent of time (thirty+ years) spinning. More to the point of reason for contacting you. Your wonderfully informative video on the basics of millinery was so intriguing I would like to know what wood could be used to make a wooden hat block and is there video guidance available on the making a hat block? Also, being a hand spinner, I do have some merino fleece in my stash for my spinning so how do I approach washing the raw fleece (plus the best detergent to successfully wash the wool plus successfully rinsing the merino fibre in preparation for making a wool felt western style man’s hat.) Could you and/or would you consider assisting me in sourcing instruction on making a completely hand made wool felt man’s western style hat? Thanking you in anticipation of your agreement of assistance. Warm regards from downunder. Ray K

Once stretched, would you be able to decorate the felt via felting, ie, the use of a barbed felting needle and loose roving? Or would that warp the shape?
@ByIlonaMillinery
@ByIlonaMillinery 2 жыл бұрын
Hello, this is a very interesting idea. I don't know anything about felting processes but I am always looking to learn. If you try this let me know how it goes. If this process involves wetting the felt in any way, I would recommend you keep the hat stretched and pinned on a block, otherwise it may loose its shape when drying.

Meat from other animals like minkt is not eaten by humans but can be eaten by other animals and the meat is often sold to zoos to keep animals who are endangered alive. Mink are not endangered.

Can you, Stiffen and form into a hat, fuzzy fur hats, without flattening the fur
@ByIlonaMillinery

Hello! Yes you can, you will still need a brush, but use the brush against the direction of the fur strands. This will make them stand almost upright.

Hi, Ilona! I have purchased "superthanks" for this video and left the comment, but I can not see it below for some reason...can you see that and did you get "superthanks", or this is an youtube issue?
@ByIlonaMillinery
@ByIlonaMillinery 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Kristina, I can't see your super thanks comment either. It might be a KZbin thing. Maybe check with your bank (or whatever money service you used to pay the superthanks) and see if the transaction went through. If it did go through then it is a KZbin problem and you would have to get in touch with them about it.

@@ByIlonaMillinery yes, I have a successful payment bill and information in my profile regarding purchases/membership. The comment was here, BUT it disappeared after a few minutes. I suppose the reason is that I have shared a few links for feltbodies suppliers in EU. Perhaps the comment was deleted by the system as an "advertising stuff". It's a shame because it was superthanks comment. I wrote the youtube support but to be honest I do not expect to get the fix..

Ah, yes, links don't work in my comments unless they are approved, but I don't see any links that need to be approved at my end - so I am not sure what is going on there. Maybe re-make a normal comment with the names of suppliers without links? I will pin it to the top of the comments section 😊
