Flettner rotor is built from thin 150g/sqm woven glassfiber composite.
The composite is wrapped on circular high density foam discs that are glued on the central axel that rotate about the loadbearing stationary vertical axel. The whole rotor is driven by a brushless direct current motor (BLDC) via belt. It is all mounted on a small catamaran hull.
The same rotor technology is used by Norse Power, that makes the Norse Rotor Sail. This is mounted on several large freight ships and passenger ships

M/W Copenhaven owned by Scandlines www.scandlines...
The M/W Copenhagen is now called a 'hybrid ferry', but in fact the accumulated emission savings are 4-5% and up to 20% in optimal wind conditions (which is probably not both ways across the route same day) [source: shipandbunker....]

It would be interesting to compare performance using the same power applied to a conventional propeller.
@stigantonnielsen
@stigantonnielsen 3 жыл бұрын
This is comparable to motor assisted sailing / sail assisted motoring, so the rotor sail is just converting the wind energy like a sail. Therefore a 'conventional propeller' would not stand a chance energy-wise to this rotor. But sure, still it would be interesting to get a better idea of the efficiency of the rotor and have a factor of gain, but that would highly depend on the wind energy in the system. Normally one would say 20% goes to driving the rotor (where 100% is the forward acceleration of the boat), so a factor 5 maybe ?

@@stigantonnielsen How abt comparing the same electric power to a fan propeller like those on airboats?
@ezrarichardson279

With the same motor with a properly sized propeller it would hardly move at all. It just wouldn’t have enough power to push it. All the motor has to do in the case in this video is to overcome the (some what low) inertia of the flettner rotor which doesn’t require much power at all. The boat is then pushed forward by the lift generated at a 90 degree angle from the wind. So in short, if there’s wind, a rotor sail would require a lot less power to move the boat than a propeller.

Would t The effect would be the same if it was a rigid cylindical structure, with just the skin of the cylinder rotating. With this design, it seems as if the motor bearings are taking a considerable load, as they have to bear the full weight of the structure, plus any wind loading. You could have, say, four rigid cylindrical structures, one at each of the four corners of the catamaran, connected together at the top, to increase structural rigidity. The skin could be made of fabric and would be rotated around the rigid cylindrical structure, perhaps by having toothed belts sown at specific intervals on the inside of the skin so the skin could be driven round cylinder by motor-driven cogs.

I was curious about that, too. Also, does rotor speed vary with wind speed or direction? How close to the wind will it sail? If you had 2 rotors, driven individually, you could use them for steering.

Mm.., at first I thought it was an electric generator. And if it is a ship's propulsion device, I think regular boat sails are still better. We only need to replace the forming material to make it easier to carry and more efficient. 😊

Hi. I'm looking for an answer. the force arising from rotation tends to overturn the sail, just as it happens with a conventional sail, or is it directed strictly horizontally?

Why does he keep using the paddle to turn. Are the tillers not sufficient.
@stigantonnielsen
@stigantonnielsen 3 жыл бұрын
The hull is rather long and its all very light weight, so inertia is not sufficient to turn with the bow towards the wind. It was possible through to turn with the stern to the wind, bow downwind, without using the paddle. Tillers / rudder worked well for adjusting heading relative to the wind while sailing.
