The rollers on the back of the missile on the F-16 you looked at are known as Rollerons which provide stability and prevent the missile from rolling. Former aircraft tech with a big appetite for aviation with a big interest in US Navy aircraft.

@@StigAviation Just a side note on those F-16 missiles, they're either an AMD telemetry pod or it was originally a live AIM-9 Sidewinder missile which the seeker head has been removed. Air to Air weapons are mainly categorised by the colored bands on the body and if they are entirely blue or have blue only bands, they are a CATM with no warhead but replicates the same mass as if a real weapon was on there for training purposes. Also a similar device known as a TACTS or ACMI pod is used to record flight manouvering data. The information is then downloaded via a cartridge and can be displayed on a screen for crews to review their tactics, lessons learned and plan future strategies. Establishments such as the US Navy Topgun school (yes it's officially one word and not two like Hollywood's version) and squadron level training units use this equipment all the time.

Hey Stig, I’m not a navy pilot, or qualified in any way, but the f-18 landing gear is shaped that way because of the descent rate that those planes land at. There’s no flare when they’re landing on the carrier, so descent rates are 2-300 short of 1000ft/min. Gotta have beefy gear for that

I'm here in Stigs channel because not only are these videos a great insight... but my late Dad was Sqdn Ldr with 50 Sqdn + 230 OCU flying Vulcans ( Scampton, Waddington UK) and I remember him saying " The ground crew keep him in the air, he only knew where to put the stick." ... He also said "The art of flying = how to hurl yourself at the ground and miss". Merry Christmas -- I hope the Aircraft and you get some time off. 👍

Hey Stig, I work for BMW North America at their production plant in SC. When I started and was going through indoctrination, err I mean orientation, they said the colors and pattern were meant to represent the Bavarian flag.

That’s very interesting because from what I’ve read in history, it represents a propeller, but then again, I might be wrong, I trust the people at BMW. I’m sure they know better than I do. But the fact still stands that BMW was manufacturing aircraft engines before they were manufacturing vehicles.

If you ever get the chance both are great visits. You can see the Air Force Museum in a day but it is hard to take it all in. From what I read on the history of that aircraft, they used it as a test bed for an experimental engine. And it might’ve been in Europe at some point as well.

Another interesting fact about the SR71 P&W JT58?? engine. It has no igniter box, igniter leads or igniter plugs!🤔 So how does it ignite the fuel and light up the afterburner? A normal jet engine ignition system won’t work because of the special fuel it uses.

To be honest with you Trevor, I don’t know, I’ve never worked that engine, and I am very ignorant when it comes to it. I would have to read and do research to find out myself.

@@StigAviation I didn’t work on either. I picked it up here on you tube. The JP8 fuel it runs on has a high flash point, this is due to the skin of the aircraft glowing cherry red at Mach 3. A shot of tetra ethyl borane burns super hot (TEB) which is enough to light up the engine and the afterburner. TEB ignites on contact with air and produces a green flame. If you have time one day, check out the videos on this remarkable 1950s aircraft.

Containing so much composite, might the B787 be more susceptible to damage by different modes of lightning strikes? I believe Boeing was recently granted FAA approval to no longer fit copper foil cladding to the center fuel tank (or wing tanks?). Boeing designed that feature into 787s to conduct lightning safely around and away from the fuel tanks, avoiding explosions. During COVID, I met a QANTAS 787 pilot redeployed to do patient screening tasks at the hospital where I work. I asked him about the 'plastic' 787-9 that he flies--he told me about a 787 he was piloting that had a lightning strike without problems. Have you seen or been alerted to lightning damage on 787s at work--is it more frequent than on metal aircraft and do the 787 fuel tanks contain nitrogen?
@StigAviation
@StigAviation 6 ай бұрын
The 787 is susceptible to lightning strikes, but it does absorb it pretty good. The problem starts happening with the damage it causes. You see metal can be repaired very easily, a few rivets here a patch there, good to go. Now a composite fuselage is very different. Damage is not as evident and it could extend out into other factors of the fuselage. So a very intense inspection as well as a very in-depth repair needs to be done. But all that stuff is very Boeing proprietary technology, I can’t really talk about it here.

@@StigAviation Thank's Stig! Statistics prove every aluminium aircraft will be lightning struck, usually about once a year or so. For Boeing to have any secrecy surrounding such a high-risk issue I feel is worrying. If damage is unseen, obscure or requires greater in-depth investigation, surely all such data should be openly shared with the industry while we are in the early stages of using and understanding the damage, wear and aging characteristics of carbon fiber pressure vessels (fuselage structures).
