I just finished restoring my 021, today. It has been a three month endeavor. I had to replace crank, bearings, seal, cylinder, rings, oil pump, all hoses, carb an finally the cases, themselves. Some idiot had smoked the cases by leaving the chain break on at high throttle settings. They burned up the area around the oil pump and it pumped oil into the sprocket area instead of the bar. It is working fine, now and is a nice little 40 cc saw.

What a filthy saw. Pressure was it, first.

I have never understood why folks do not clean their saws. The sprocket cover is one of the easiest things to clean. Put some Dawn on it and clean it up in the kitchen sink. Petit dry and put it back on the saw. Flywheel sides are a little harder but I clean them the same way. Starters I clean the same way. Soap and water or a spray bottle of Super Clean work wonders on a dirty saw. You can use soapy water on just about any part of a saw, just don’t let it get in the cylinder or exhaust port. When I pressure was a filthy saw, I put a piece of paper towel in the intake boot and exhaust port. Of course, I pull the carb, first. I then let it drain the sun for a day or so before putting it back together. Compressed air also increases drying. You saw is a candidate for pressure washing.

An 021 is just a smaller version of the MS 250 and the Stihl 025, both of which I have.😊

You have to pull that muffler the same way you pull the muffler off an Ms 180 - straight and level, because it has long muffler bolts. Take the spark arrestor off, first.
