Unbelievable awesome channel. Just foud this but by far the best chainsaw tuning channel I have seen. The best part seems to be that you make one change at time and after that you will test the saw in dyno. Never seen this kind of analytic prosess. Funny thing is that I just put after market cylinder to my MS260 and were very disapointed its weak power🙂. I wish this channel will give me some answers why. Thanks about good work. Have to continue this 026 series further now:-)

@AnttiKoivunen-im9us Thank you so much for the kind words!! I really enjoy the analytics and the attempt to understand two strokes; I'm happy that you enjoy the journey!! Being new to two strokes, I want to test each little thing. I have not built very many saws, but I do see a commonality that they all seem to produce less power when installed right out of the box; of course, as many cylinders as I tend to ruin, aftermarket is what I use. I think *most* of the 026 build is in the playlist, but there's a couple of playlists (such as muffler mods) that may have a mod or two that didn't get included into the 026 playlist; I'm also new at youtube, so I bumble along the best I can. I am sure happy that you found us and an extra-happy that you took a moment to comment; don't be a stranger!! If you don't mind to answer and if I'm not prying too much, which part of the world do you call "home"?

@@HayChaffandSawdust1 Hi, thanks about reply. My home is in Finland. I think Finland is great country to live. Pretty much the only bad thing is our eastern neighbour Putin's Russia. We have to be afraid all the time if he decides to attack here after Ukraine. My target also in chain saw parting really is to get better understanding how 2-stroke really works. Does this chainsaw tuning make sense, no. Is this tuning fun, yes🙂 Great to see those intake and exhaust porting results separately. I wish you have at some point time do the piston mode and low transfer widening results also separately. I have never seen does those changes really bring any power or not. Now the increased power may have gained just widening the lower transfers. Is there any specific reason why you have oval shaped top of the exhaust port? Just wondering because I guess the upper transfers are any way totally flat so is there reason why piston ring tolerates flat shape in tranfers but not in exhaust? I really enjoy watching this 026 saga. I noticed that you have tuning video also to MS250. Funny that I have both MS250 and MS260 saws:-)

@AnttiKoivunen-im9us Finland!! I've been close, but never THERE. I spent about 3 months in the North Atlantic, Norway, and even made it to the "North Pole"... or as close as practical on a ship; very few US Navy Sailors make it to the North Pole; there is a whole ceremony for the "Blue Nose" initiation. Beautiful place and wonderful people. Even the Russian citizens were great "normal" people. I guess people are generally assumed to be the same "type" of person as the leader; I've been in may parts of the world and the working class people are similar EVERYWHERE!! The "026 Project" playlist will have individual results for modifications to the upper transfers, lower transfers, piston mods, offsetting the cylinder, etc... The reason for the rounded exhaust shape and the straight transfer shape is the fact that the ring is stiff enough to bridge the gap of the transfers without falling INTO the transfers to the point of being a problem. The ring is flexible enough to fall into the wider exhaust opening as the piston goes down and back up; the slope of the roof and sides help "squeeze" the ring back into the ring land at it comes out of the exhaust port and back into the cylinder. There may be a couple of different 025/MS250 builds on my channel; here, the parts are very inexpensive for the MS250 series and the first gains are very easy and noticeable.

I like seeing the results of a direct bolt on of a kit like that. I imagine a lot of people just buy those and throw them on expecting better results.
@HayChaffandSawdust110 ай бұрын
@FarmlessFarmer-xs1he I know, RIGHT??!! I speculated it would not perform as well as the stock cyl, but was astonished at the dismal results. Bigger SHOULD be better. ...and it will be with a little bit of grinding (I hope). It will probably force another video; attempt replicate the stock port timing/shape and re-dyno before porting further.
@FarmlessFarmer-xs1he10 ай бұрын
I’d be very interested to see how the big bore kit performed with porting taken to the specs of the stock cylinder as closely as you could do because I dont think anyone else has a dyno video like that out there. And you’re working with a saw that most average folks could afford to get into and that makes a great first saw for people to tear into and have a go at it themselves. Guys like me who become a little obsessed with numbers would watch every video if you made a tiny change each time no matter how many videos you make.
@HayChaffandSawdust110 ай бұрын
@FarmlessFarmer-xs1he I was thinking the same thing; maybe some short(er) vids with 2 or three changes and results in the same video? The drawback, with no base gasket, I have to let the sealant cure (at least) 4 hours before I can test it and clean-up of surfaces between coats of permatex. Could turn base far enough to use a base gasket to emulate a base gasket delete, I guess.

Well, I love the fact that one can get a aftermarket cylinder set for cheap instead going to official Stihl store and getting ripped off. In my eastern European surroundings I can find a good old 026 for around 150€. Or a non running one for 50-100€. The service guys ask 200-250€ for a cylinder change. And if you are good with a Dremel, the power probably is still there, and doesn't cost you an arm and a leg. 026 is the saw I suggest to homeowners. And pretty much all parts are available.
@HayChaffandSawdust110 ай бұрын
@KrisjanisZarins Right on the money with your comment. I believe the power will still be there (plus a bunch more), but I wanted to do a base-line dyno run/test cuts with an out-of-the-box cylinder prior to putting the grinder to it. We plan to do the full build and document progress or regress on the dyno along the way. Thanks for joining-in the conversation with all of us!!

A lot of good information in this video I love my 026 I've had the saw since it was brand new in the early 90s. Still running completely stock, never changed piston bearings. Nothing .still has incredible compression and it's screams. I'm always tempted to screw with it. And put a new cylinder in piston in it. But I don't dare until it really goes South. It cuts about a cord to 2 cords of firewood every year and miscellaneous around the yard tree trimmings .

@chriss8206 This is the first 026 that I've owned and it's a nice sized saw between too small and big. Like you, I used to hate to mess with a good running saw; I've found a compromise though with the Aftermarket parts... I mess with the AM stuff and leave the stock stuff alone; by that I mean, my original cylinder, piston, etc... are still in their original condition; it can all be put right back on to put the saw back in its original config with its original parts... just like it was. If this cylinder works out well (we're up to about 4.5hp with it right now... quite a few mods tweaks done to it since this particular video... all in an 026 playlist), and I so choose, I can duplicate the stuff into the orig cyl. Thanks for joining-in!

@Archer_82 It's coming along; good to hear from you again; hope all is well with you and your loved-ones. There's been some up and downs, but sealer is setting-up as we speak for the next phase of testing. I think think this one may be fun to test EACH step along the way.

Happy New Year's. Didn't take you long you get posting this year. Not an impressive " upgrade" but I'm sure you'll remedy that.

@Kevin.L_ Happy New Year to you too, Kevin. The results were SURE disappointing, weren't they? I knew intake and squish would be bad, but didn't expect it to be THAT bad.

What does the muffler kit do for the saw.
@HayChaffandSawdust110 ай бұрын
@vincewoolley6774 On many chainsaws, the muffler is a pinch point in the system which restricts air flow capability... (sort of like putting a potato in someone's exhaust pipe to make their car not run with any power.) Modifying the muffler with an appropriate(ish) size/shape hole with allow more air into and out of the saw engine; it also promotes cooling of the engine. For a short answer.

@karlsborgwi.jewell9919 I see your comment in my notifications, but not anywhere else; I even tried fresh kerosene in the computer with no luck 🤯🤯 . The fuel I run is 88 octane non-ethanol fuel that I keep on-hand here; it also gets treated with Sta-Bil when I take delivery.
