@davec1835 Total agreement from me!! Sometimes, in my testing, I try to isolate an idea; in this case, I have two 455s and have muff modded the other one and other external mods (videos have not been released yet) and documented the gains for each; I wanted to try this intake block on a stock saw, then I will try it on a muff modded saw and see if it works better in one situation that the other. I hope, on a muffler modded saw and *ONLY* changing the intake block, I get even more gains than over a stock saw. On some saws, I try to isolate a few different techniques throughout the build; it takes a few more time apart/together, but that's how I learn. Thanks for riding along, for the muffler suggestion, and for taking time to comment!!

Thank you for opening my mind to what those strato ports do. Thank back to the 70's when the car manufacturers were trying to meet the new EPA regulations they added a air pump to the exhaust to dilute the gass to exceptional levels. Same here a fresh air charge ahead of the fuel mixture to push the exhaust gass out and bring down the emissions. Rattle those marbles around in your head for a minute and see if that makes any sense. Just a thought from a knucklehead. Now how to get around it! 0:00

@stephenoney2206 You're quite welcome; I hope it helped the understanding some; all of my words may not hold up in court, but the premise is correct, I think. The EGR and "smog pumps" were an attempt; in my opinion, the smog pumps worked GREAT for aerating a big pond if it was frozen for too long OR, and MORE FUN, was using the smog pump to supercharge a Lawn Boy two stroke mower!! I think getting around the stratos, like I showed in the video directly before and directly after this video is a pretty fair step in the right direction. If nothing else, it opens the door for more port-timing possibilities without disrupting the delicate balance between fresh air and fuel-charged air. Thanks for stopping-in and joining-in!!

Well I've not gotten back on my 455 with the transfer spacers yet, but have been busy with a stihl 261 cm. Got it running great with all new version 3 coil, carburetor, and harness. Then picked up what i thought was another non cm 261. Well turned out it's a 271 wood boss. Cleaning it up found the piston smeared. Ordered a 291 topend and started looking at it and all the cm parts will fit right in place. Hopefully I'll have a 291 cm here before long.😂@HayChaffandSawdust1

100% on that squish band, there’s a reason the high end guys have 2 different angles on the piston crown and squish band so that when it compresses it compresses towards the combustion chamber. And gas porting makes a surprising difference, I’ve done gas ported rings and lateral gas porting on the piston for a while and it’s a little trick that just gives me that tiny bit more compression and helps re seal a super thin ring. I find all three of those combine when making super high compression builds like my 46 to help keep all the compression when using a super thin in all dimensions single ring pistons.

Id say maybe make a sacrificial cover for testing with the back sawed off, iv run saws with no cover to try out bike carbs and other nonse nonsense and they seem to get hot quick. Neat video as usual. Have you tried or have thought s on knife edging and boutailing the cranks counter weights on a non strato saw? How about shaping the leading edge more like a wedge to direct charge up the transfers?
@HayChaffandSawdust1
@HayChaffandSawdust1 4 күн бұрын
@obbyjep7597 I like the idea of a sacrificial cover; on this particular saw, it will still be a firewood saw when I get done (I'm guessing 🤷); if I spend a little more time on the carb linkage, the top cover will work fine... even with a velocity stock... if we go that route. I sure have considered working on the crankshaft lobes, but have not got to it yet. I usually trench the cyl to get my flow around the lobes, but sure see the benefit and drawbacks of reshaping the lobes. On one hand, there IS flow; on the other hand, there's an increase in case capacity (lower case compression) and lower rotating mass. Currently, I like the thought of a BUNCH of rotating mass for the kind of work I tend to do. Have you tried it with any success or failure? I'm curious to hear results. I do know one other that's removed a big portion of the lobes; he does a LOT of limbing/small wood and likes it for that. I've always thought of knife edging the leading edge also, but it's already past the point of the xfers by the time the piston reaches BDC and is already blocking part of the lower xfers by the time the uppers open. I don't say that to be arguing with you, but to just verbalize some of my thoughts on something I have not attempted yet!! I do consider that it will work great for certain characteristic-goals! Good stuff!!!

@@HayChaffandSawdust1 I'm very open to ideas of how to do these saws, I am by no means a expert and can only test my mods by cutting so there is a lot of room for kinda 'by guess by golly ' that's part of why I enjoy watching and talking to guys like yourself. Some of the saws I use like my 346,s are primarily used as climbing saws so quick revs and somewhat higher rpm are really nice, such as cutting off a barberchairing top before it can and just that quick response for limbing. I usually smooth and polish the underside of piston and skirt also lightning it and have on a couple done knife edging, lightning on the crank along with port timing and compression increase and the saw seemed really snappy quick to rev, almost light a v8 withlight flywheel and stuff. it can be hard to say what did what sometimes without back to bac dyno testing. I could see how on bigger saws or ones mostly for bucking, falling bigger stuff having weight and momentum in the rotating stuff would be benifital. I know in the 2 stroke dirt bike word they tend to use crankcase stuffers and stuff to decrease the volume usually for mid range, porting and increase volume for top range... Also having the advantage of tuned pipes that we normally don't

@@obbyjep7597 I'm not sure (one way or the other) that running two carbs will help any; follow me here... you're looking for a fuel/air ratio about 4x more than regular fuel (for argument's sake). With two carbs, you are actually supplying twice the fuel but also twice the air; I don't believe that the fuel/air ratio can be accomplished with two carbs; I would be more apt to try a carb that will flow enough fuel and actually sleeve the venturi to restrict the air. Nitro doesn't need as much "air"... it carries its own chemical form of air with it. Good stuff!! Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not talking from hands-on experience and am only talking stuff I learned from science, the innertube, and mentors. Hope that thought/opinion doesn't derail or divert you from pursuing the endeavor. I'm very interested in how it turns out!!

I think I have the SHAPE of the linkage ok, but it's swiveling in the little plastic doodad that reacts against the trigger; I'll have to get back at that pretty soon. Top cover must be on a saw that’s run for more than a few minutes. On saws that I port or work on and I leave the top cover off while I just do short test runs on I can tell an immediate difference in how hot the cyl gets. Id love to now how to take a external impulse and learn were to drill to make it internal!!
@HayChaffandSawdust1
@HayChaffandSawdust1 5 күн бұрын
@alltherpm Not sure if you are considering going from external to internal *OR* internal to external. Either way, it's fairly easy; on non-external impulse carbs, there is usually a little raised "boss" on the carb cover; it's right over the biggest volume of the fuel pump diaphragm. Bear in-mind that there are usually passages that will connect the "outside" of the impulse area on the diaphragm to the "inside" impulse channel; it must be blocked; it can be blocked with the gasket on the face of the carb. If going from outside impulse to inside pulse, a hole will have to be drilled into the mounting face of the carb that connects with the passage to the "outside" of the diaphragm; of course, the external pulse tube will need blocked. When blocking an external impulse port, don't use a long piece of hose or something with too much volume as the volume will dampen the pulse. Clear as mud??
@alltherpm
@alltherpm 5 күн бұрын
@HayChaffandSawdust1 id like to try a 372 carb on my homelite and that carb is external impulse, I'll look under the top cover were impulse would go through see if I can drill it to match my homelites internal deal?
@HayChaffandSawdust1
@HayChaffandSawdust1 4 күн бұрын
@alltherpm Ahhh Ok, I only gave you part of the info; I was thinking along the lines of an MS440 carb where the impulse is on the removeable fuel pump cover; I had not considered a 372 carb that goes in thru the side; you can match the gasket hole to the location and intersect the channel of the side impulse; remove the nipple from the 372 carb and block it off. ANOTHER thought: if it runs impulse through the face of the carb (like a MS250) but runs a hose from the a nipple on the cylinder to a nipple on the intake manifold, just use a longer hose that goes from the engine to the carb. Hope that makes sense.

@andrewgrubb8947 I tend to agree with you; I was worried that the carb block had warped and allowed an air leak during the heat run; that's why, after recording the dyno results, I tore the saw down and showed the piston/cyl. When I recorded the dyno results, I just wasn't confident; I feel better about it now!! Thanks for always being a positive force here!

This is great. I’ve been following this project. Question, was the first dyno run Dave’s 455 build? Then the second run after the top end modifications and 357 carb?
@HayChaffandSawdust1
@HayChaffandSawdust1 5 күн бұрын
@IndianaDoug Good questions; I continually forget to give the "back story". First, I am modding two different 455s at the same time and I was just using the cyl of the OTHER 455 as a prop/illustration. Second, just to clarify and keeps Dave's good name in-tact, that was a non-running stock saw that Dave donated to me for the postage; he didn't build it; it had a gummy ring from bad fuel. The first run was the same saw with no mods after I cleaned the piston/ring ... not even a muffler mod; the second run was with the carb block. At the risk of sounding redundant, the only difference between the first and second run was the carb mod on an otherwise stock saw. The top-end mod of adjusting the top end's squich/compression is going to be shown on the other saw. Doug, I'm sure happy that you took a moment to comment down here; I'm just as bad as a lot of other "creators"... inasmuch as I know the importance of comments, I'm bad about not commenting sometimes myself. Like your channel!! Thanks Doug!

@wrstew1272 The angle cut would solve a few issues and cause a few. In an aluminum block, I could just drill in ~1/2" deep square to the face of the carb and thread it; on the delrin, I would have to drill all the way though; an angled thru-hole will breach the other holes and cause issues. At the time of recording the "results" part, I hadn't taken the saw apart yet... I was disgusted and thought that I may have warped the block and sucked air; the last clip was after I got the nerve to take it apart; I was ready to see carnage, but seen none!! I'm even more confident it was all about the top cover.

I don’t agree that using an offset increases blowdown. I believe that moving the offset forward simply delays all the phases-by about +1 after each dead center-while the spacing between phases stays the same: ExOpen 100 becomes ExOpenOffset 101, IntakeOpen 124 becomes IntakeOpenOffset 125. Maybe I’m misunderstanding something, so I’ll think it over and rewatch the video. Have you thought about tilting the cylinder base or the crankcase? I think that with the 1.5 mm 0.060'' offset you made, it’s shifted forward by about 2 degrees, but I’d need to draw it with the correct measurements first, since I’m missing the length of the connecting rod. I really appreciate your videos!

@alessioG7176 I appreciate your respectful disagreement; that's what drives learning for each of us! If I were a good youtuber, I would NEVER direct you away from my channel... I'm NOT a good one; I like learning more than a view or two!! There is a very good video about the offset engine as it applies to 4 stroke engines... but the movement change is the same. The computer animation is GREAT!! There are a couple of errors in the video, but not large enough to make it invalid. I would recommend to watch the whole video, but @7 minutes begins the mechanical disruption that changes the relationship that would cause the degrees-of-separation to change (between ex and xfer ports etc) from the down stroke to the up stroke. kzbin.info/www/bejne/najXi55-pLuAqdE Now, bear in mind that the video GREATLY exaggerated the offset to better show the changes. Yes, I have considered changing the offset by tilting the base and moving the wrist pin in the piston. None of these are new ideas to the auto world. Echo does use the offset piston pin to great success in some models. There are many ways to offset the engine and so little room; I would actually LOVE to "stack" the offsets by moving forward, tilting backward, and finding a piston that works with a specific saw. So many saws... so little time. I think, with my current abilities, I *CAN* move forward AND tilt backward and get even more gains than just moving forward. Thanks for the good conversation; I was trying to type a response earlier and thought about that video that I had seen a long time ago.. erased all that I had written (that I couldn't even make sense to ME!!) and linked the video. I hope you find it helpful. Let me know please!!! @@HayChaffandSawdust1 Thank you so much for that video, it really cleared up a lot for me. Yes, I underestimated some aspects like the BDC not being at 180°, the shift at 90°, and the fact that Vespa had pistons with an offset-though some, like Malossi, had a rearward offset. I also have an Echo 620 that I should take a look at. In your opinion, what’s the limit in degrees before the rod exits the exhaust port? If you’re looking for a simple idea for a video, you could test different oil mixtures-2%, 3%, 4%-and compare the temperatures they reach and the horsepower output. Maybe you’ve already done something like this, though. Thanks again!

Excellent info ! If ya think in terms of what’s really going on here inside the motor then machining the cylinder (or cases) for a tighter squish isn’t going to give the desired results vs a conventional single port fed saw. Ya might even be going backwards unless you adjust ALL the transfers in sync It’s kinda difficult to wrap your head around but if ya “get it, ya get it” … The visual aid was more than adequate and required no special animation / effects to drive the point home. Be interested to see the results on the Dyno - might make a few know-it-alls out there stop and think 🤔 a bit
@HayChaffandSawdust1
@HayChaffandSawdust1 7 күн бұрын
@fabzacres-blackcat I've considered machining the squish... it's a clamshell and I like the challenge. When considering machining the squish, I contemplated that it's also actually the safest way to increase intake duration (if it is even needed) as the whole cylinder's ports will drop in unison. I can see that merely lowering the "intake" could upset the apple cart pretty bad... as could doing any grinding on the piston's skirt or transfer port; also any monkey business with the lower part of the upper transfers, sans understanding, would be verboten! The strato saws are 3d Chess to a "regular" saw's regular chess... there's a whole other level about which to consider! 🤔🤯
@fabzacres-blackcat
@fabzacres-blackcat 7 күн бұрын
@@HayChaffandSawdust1 yes , 3D chess is an accurate analogy - on the stratos I’ve found that even using a thinner gasket (which drops EVERYTHING in unison) to tighten the squish doesn’t appear to work as well as doing same to the “old fashioned” conventional single port intake , dual or quad transfers saws and in fact may even cause one to go backwards in performance! Of course one could argue that you simply Raise everything back up but THAT can quickly turn into a game of whack-a-mole! It’s almost as if the engineers said “ha ha” try and raise the compression on THESE SAWS by doing machine work - I dare ya !

Could repurposing the strato port to carry part of the fuel charge cause an issue with oiling the bottom end? I'm not 100% on the timing of the piston port, but if you deliver a given amount of fuel (which contains the oil) to run the saw, then if some of it doesn't pass through the crankcase due to you modifying the strato ports to carry some of that amount of fuel, instead going directly to the transfers and then the combustion chamber, would all the bearings see less oil? Maybe it wouldn't be enough to matter - just a random thought.
@HayChaffandSawdust1
@HayChaffandSawdust1 7 күн бұрын
@JohnSheerin For "just a random thought", that was awfully insightful; I had not considered the implications!! Thank you for pointing that out!! I believe the fuel/air going in the lower case is actually a RICH mixture that gets thinned to the proper mixture with the leftover clean air that remains in the cylinder. For argument's sake, lets say that I'm right. After I mod the transfers to accept fuel/air from both ends; I'm actually feeding both ports with the proper mixture instead of rich on the bottom and lean on top. Conversely, fueling both sides should still give the same case compression and oil saturation in the bottom end... only a leaner fuel/air than before? *IF* (for argument's sake) the bottom end is ran with 20% less fuel than that which is ran through the Strato carb, would 20% more oil in my ratio take care of that... going from 50:1 to 40:1? Thanks for your thoughts so far; do you have any more... you sure have some good ones!!
@JohnSheerin
@JohnSheerin 7 күн бұрын
@@HayChaffandSawdust1 Yeah, I think upping the oil in the fuel would keep the same amount of oil in the bottom end (if it works how I'm thinking). The trouble would be: 1 - how do you figure out what percentage of the fuel is going through the strato ports and thus not oiling the bottom end and thus how much more oil to add? 2 - the extra oil is also in the fuel going through the strato ports into the combustion chamber which would get burned (probably bad for breathing, good for keeping away the mosquitos) and I think I heard you (or maybe someone else) point out more oil makes the saw run leaner? But again maybe it's not enough to worry about. I don't know. Or you just run at 40:1 and call it a day. I'm interested to see what you do with this though.
@HayChaffandSawdust1
@HayChaffandSawdust1 7 күн бұрын
@JohnSheerin I'm actually playing monkey-shines with two different strato saws right now; I've been using ~42:1 Amsoil Sabre and still find a nice film of oil in the only one that's ran (the other is still in the "I'm still thinking" mode... it's no where close to being together). Come to think of it, I started running Amsoil since about Mid November and I haven't seen a mosquito since!!! 🤔😂😂 I've heard that running a saw with more oil makes it run leaner; I'm not necessarily saying that isn't true (because I don't actually know), but I consider that the more oil DOES make the gas/oil mix more viscous; being more viscous and having higher surface tension, would require more "room" in the jets to flow the same amount of fuel/oil. I guess I'm trying to say that one may need to run their jet farther out JUST to allow the same amount of a more-viscous fluid to pass through? I don't know if that idea holds water or not, but I think it is a valid point to ponder. Please don't think I'm arguing with you; I hope we're just exchanging ideas; I'm glad that you pointed it out and I'm just thinking and typing as I go. Thanks so much for the insight!

@alltherpm 😉😉 I got off in the weeds a little with the video's comments... there was another that read our (my) comment and I think I derailed him for a minute; I tried to hit on it during this video, but I sure flubbed it too... I "promised" to only use psig, but ended up switching between PSIG, PSIA, and PSID without even realizing it until I went to edit the video. I tend to think about all three and I forgot; I hope it wasn't too confusing "to the masses". 🤔🤔
@HayChaffandSawdust1
@HayChaffandSawdust1 8 күн бұрын
@@alltherpm Lets consider THIS... it's not necessarily gravity; it's differential pressure (PSID) that does the work. (Let me also say that it doesn't really matter so long as we can picture the flow) Picture a air compressor filling a portable air tank; there's 120PSI in one tank and 0 PSI in the other (let's claim that both tanks are the same size) ; air flows very rapidly from the full tank to the empty tank; when the big tank hits 90PSI and the small tank hits 30, the flow is still fast, but not nearly so. When the big tank hit 55 and the small tank hits 45, the air has slowed even more. When it's 51/49 flow has slowed to a trickle. It's the PSID that REALLY causes movement. To me, It doesn't truly matter which way our minds wish to picture it... whether it me atmospheric pressure (14.7 psiA/ 0.0 psiG) or at vacuum (0.0 psiA / -14.7G) Either way, it's 14.7psiD(ifferential). I wouldn't necessarily try to change the way that you have always thought about it. Some people like to think about it in one manner and some people understand it better in the other... and then there are the third type that will jump all over you no matter what you say in an attempt to make themselves look smarter (you've seen the type!!). The safe word is "pressure differential" 😉😉 Good stuff!!!
