I have the MS 340. Basically the same saw but Canada only from my research. It's a beast. Cut dozens of cord with it.

I watched a couple of videos of a MS 340, and see it stalls the chain as soon as the rpm's drop off in a harder cut, just like the 034. The porting is supposed to be a bit different, and is 59cc,s compared to the 034,s 57cc's. Used in the right circumstances both can do a good job. My McCulloch pro mac 610 has cut over a thousand chords, and has never been rebuilt. The Stihl's won't be able to match the that, as they run too fast, and just wear out.

I can absolutely understand how that you could really “Love!”…. Your little 340 and yes it’s definitely extremely similar in everything where as I’m going to assume that it’s because of the fact that you are just simply a couple decades “newer model” then me and Ol’ Mr “Crusty’s” … sum’ Vintage Boys, Maybe… But dang sure not, Obsolescent….Yet! LMFFAO! See the Stihl saw’s in general will really be allowed to spin up into the “stratosphere” in our “older fella’s minds” and then they will have a tiny bit of torque but it’s an extremely high rpm (13,500) is their recommended max (no-load) and that translates into a super fast chain speed… it’s just imperative that it’s operator either has their chain “saw shop sharpen” or that whoever is in charge of “maintaining or sharpening their chain” is very focused on those “rakes” or the chain raker’s or depth gauges right in front of the cutter tooth’s cutter face edge…. They are recommended at the depth of.025 thou deep for the hardwood and .035 soft… a Stihl’s or all Stihl Saw’s including more modern O-Series saw’s… have a very low level of actual “Chain pulling torque and they were totally designed to be run at or a stitch above 13,500 top rpm range and they require that “Hardwood” type chain setup where those little depth gauges or those “rake’s, or raker’s” only be .025 deep or be extremely accurate and extremely even in their allowance of that 025 deep cutter’s taking that smaller size chip so that it’s not possible it will be drug down out of it’s “power band range” and then be a seemingly horrible performance saw for what we’ve become usta knowing and using…. They are just a big fat dog when they get compared side by side to some different manufacturers similar cubic inches of displacement engine saw’s…. You’ll see Obsolescence’s….(My Ass!) using the old Pioneer P-40/45/50/55/65 type saw’s that have a much smaller total amount of actual engine displacement but they have a little reed valve underneath their carburetor so they can use more air and fuel blend…. Or fuel charge per rpm so they will have a huge amount more torque and they will not need to spin up super fast to spin the chain super fast taking only tiny bites from each actual cutter tooth… so they don’t spin 13,500 without a load and drop down to 9400 when the chain touches the wood…, They can be setup very rich and be only able to spin 11,500-11,800 out of the wood and then you’ll drop it down into the cut and it’s spinning 10,700 with deeper rakes so it’s spitting bigger chips and it’s not really dropping way down out of the working range because it’s basic engine design results in so much more actual power output per CC’s…. There’s lots that go into the total equation but basically the Stihl saw’s have a high exhaust port window roof and a lower exhaust duration number so it’s just not really having it’s piston’s being able to make power while moving down until the exhaust port window opens up and it’s starting to make it’s exchange of spent fuel charge and it’s sucking up and blowing the next power blast into your topend or cylinder’s combustion chamber! Most Stihl are barely in the 98-100 range from the factory so they spin up into that stratospheric range… Husqvarna is 105… only can get up spinning into that 12.500 rpm’s or revolution’s per minute…. Piston’s going up and down the cylinder bore 12,500 times per minute!!! ( What!!!???) LMFFAO! Why is older guy’s scream about our 32:1 or more oil in that fuel charge on there cause those little suckers zip up and down so fast it actually usta scare me coming from the Diesel Engine building and maintenance world where I consider a piston going 1750 RPM’s or 2000 is moving plenty fast enough for my loaded F-250 to pull the trailer with the Bobcat up a pretty good little hill and it’s just cruising along…. I personally run really “rich” so most of my saw’s are usually never allowed to spin up over 11,800 or 12,000 rpm’s… unless it’s really hurting them…. My older saw’s cutting my firewood as a kid up through where spinning 8000-9000 rpm’s totally but one only spinning 8-8,500K was a 404 chain so a much bigger bite into the wood each time and then it doesn’t really need to spin at a frighteningly high rpm speed to take a whole bunch of tiny bites… it can grow along relatively slowly because it’s ripping off a massive chunk of wood per each bite of the chain…. Just kinda two different schools of thought in their design and they require totally different chain and it’s take depths and how much bar length you can actually use…. A 034-340 with a 18” .325 or a 16” 3/8’s setup will blast up and zip down through anything you drop it down on dang near need to catch it as it’s dropping down through!!! But you put a long bar combo or make a aggressive at all chain sharpened type deal and it’ll barely be able to spin your chain around and when it’s getting a chip loaded cut groove or a pinch or you hit a knot in the wood and it’s damn chain will stop and old guy’s want to hit it with the hammer!!!! LMFFAO! Took me several years to really understand the difference between the different manufacturers of saw’s thinking and I’m not really interested in running a Stihl saw to cut any real work or not taking them out to work,,, I definitely rebuild the one’s I find that need a rebuild and I port up and rebuild and collect them.,. But it’s a Husqvarna or a P45-50-55 type powerhead and a 18 or 20” setup on it…. I build the little Husqvarna 350’s into a 353 type version and use a 18” bar setup usually… my little 45mm bore over 32? Or a 50cc size engine displacement (50.89…vs… 53.18 in the 034???? And a hyper active 350-353 will destroy the 034 in pulling a chain because they have a little bit more length of that piston’s traveling down their cylinder bore and it finally gets to the exhaust port window top edge and “the first ray of light’ “ old Harvey’s line!”… it’s actually about the width of a regular business card unless there’s a tuned pipe exhaust on the engine…. It’s just a damn shame that a German invented nikasil bore lining material and process while at (mahle)… and made the Declaration!!! Only his fellow German folks or Stihl Corp would be allowed to use his technology!!! So those really incredible fellas who really designed and built some incredible models… saw the “the end was near and the professional guy’s all going away” or them never going to be able to nearly complete in their performance and they folded up their businesses!!! The modern fuel injection 500i Stihl would be very funny if you had a modern “Poulan or Pioneer” nikasil cylinder lining with a carbon fiber three pedals reed valve block and the old high and low jet “operator capability to control it’s ultimate engine performance and it’s power output, fuel usage and top “no load” rpm’s…. The Stihl Corporation would be out of business next year!!! If a professional cutter could get “hands on” with a “modern version” of the P-Series Saw’s in that P-40 or 35 up into the 80cc size P-65 type powerhead’s no other models would ever get purchased again unless that fella buying just was unfortunately unaware of his options and those other models potential ownership ability…. You get the opportunity in your own lifetime to get yourself next to a good old fella with some good running well maintained older reed saw’s… a P-50-55…. You will just be ruined for any and all Stihl of anything else really… because it’s kinda like having a 50-60 CC’s size package in your grip but that little sucker is ripping like a 066/660-395 type deal and it’s just too small and lighter weight to be possible…like! Those “Damn!” Older Classic’s have ruined my whole life at this point! I’d collected 50 or 60 saw’s ( modern models) because I love saw’s and then I realize that there’s a whole different universe!!!! I’d yet to discover so now I’m on my way to 50 “Vintage!” Is a nice word for our description….LMFFAO! Because I’m getting pretty Vintage myself these days! Ahahaaa!!!

Hey old (mr. Cheesy) (Crusty I’d say!) 😂😂😂. If you want me to toss a 036 topend into a box to help that little pig actually even cut!!! LMFFAO I’ve got a free extra parts and pieces package for you anytime you want it.,. I’m doing a 034 to 036 today and the other 036 cylinder is beautiful inside also so it’s available and ready to go whenever you want it.,, I use the Farmertec stuff and order the two new carburetor studs and I press out the two short ones and replace them with the bigger longer most modern so I can run the cheap new bigger air filters and everything else…it’s not $15 bucks in total for them 7-8 parts from China!!! A $20 spot gets the bigger back plastic filter cover too!!!! LMFFAO

For me, I like the medium speed (9 to 10 grand) cutting speed saws with some torque and a sharp chain to do my work. The high speed, no torque saws are for everyone else ! I have several of the larger Pioneer saws with the reed valves, and they are excellent all around performers. I have a P50 in several of my older videos. I made the mistake of getting some of the high speed no torque saws in the past, but they all wore out quickly and I went back to using my old saws, some with over 40 years of service with no major repairs. Vintage is best for me !

I found an old 034 from 1985. Same chassis as the 036. Same era as the 064. Since my 034 was blown up I put an 036 piston and cylinder on it. I’ve got an 18” and a 25” bar for it and it pulls a 25” reasonable. Not like my 064 but it does alright. Has a small spline on it so it takes the same rim as a stihl 026. And not all 036 saws had decomps on them, the 036 saws I’ve seen didn’t have them but the 036 pros did

The last of the 034's, the 034 Super had a decomp valve and 61.5 cc's displacement. It was a much better saw than the standard 034. I have not ever had or run an 036, so I don't know much about them.

It would be interesting to run an 036 to see if they upgraded the saw so it would have some torque to go along with the hp. Good overview of some really nice vintage saws. I've never run an 034, so I'm paying close attention to what you have to say. Interesting that it's a tweener type saw. I do like the "0" series saws from Stihl, some of their best. That 051 you have, I love that saw! The vintage McCulloch and Homelite saws, I don't think you can go wrong with any of them, solid runners.

Having a nice collection of chainsaws has been a fun and interesting, as well as useful hobby. It is interesting to see the good, bad and stupid designs that have been foisted on the public over the years. Each saw has it's challenges and rewards. My McCulloch's have been the saws with the most rewards and least challenges for me. Some of the Homelite, Pioneer and Lombard saws have been a close second. Vintage is best !

People don’t ever lube the sprocket bearing. I usually just replace clutch, sprocket and bearings on a used saw. They are pretty cheap off EBay. The worst problem taking these parts off is the E clip holding the sprocket and bearing on. I keep an assortment of these E clips, because if they fly off the chance of finding them is about 50%. I have spent hours looking for them and they cost about a buck from my local Stihl dealer. I use either white lithium grease (what Stihl uses) or high temp wheel bearing grease, but any good grease will work. I lube mine about once a year based upon the use of the saw. More, then at a higher frequency and at least any time that I remove the 9:17 sprocket. If the sprocket wobbles on the bearing, I replace the bearing. What I want is a good snug fit between the sprocket, bearing and crank.

I service the clutch bearings once a year on my saws, which is adequate. On some of my old Homelites, the bearings and clutch drums were really worn out, so I bought some aftermarket parts. They were so crappy, I threw them away, and found some NOS parts to fix them. There is a lot of junk out there.

I must be spoiled, as all my midsize saws from 51 to 60cc's are all much easier to pull through and start than my 034. Stihl finally figured it out and put a decompression valve on the 034 super. The 034 would have been a much better saw with a purge valve for the fuel system and a decompression valve.

I would compare the 034 to Husqvara 55. Nice running saws (with an 18" bar) . I was able to fix the hard start issue on an 034 by backing off the choke return spring a bit . It wasn't allowing the choke to close fully. You could probably upgrade an 034 to an 036 top end ( maybe) for more torque . Mr. Obs , I will try to send you a link to a short video of the one I fixed cutting some red pine. Vintagesawyer

Anybody that tries to fleece me does not get my business. I would have paid $.09 a piece just to keep from having to buy from Ace. I usually buy my seeds from Ace because they are usually reasonable but not this year. It is 46 outside, right now and I will leave them covered until I plant them in the garden.
