Great video, thank you. I picked one of these up at an estate sale and am thrilled to hear how simple they are to work on. I am new to chainsaws and your video has me very excited to get it tuned up and back to work!

I've got an early 90's PM605 that was bought for me by a girlfriend at the time. It was my first chainsaw and its stayed with me for some unknown reason throughout all my trials and tribulations of years gone by. I had a love hate relationship with the saw over the years. It was always very hard starting and you were half worn out by the time you got cutting with it. After it was warmed up however it would start on first pull and had good power. Its always been a last resort for me for that reason and grab my Stihl MS271 instead. About every 5 years or so I grab the old girl (the chainsaw, the girl friends long gone) and try and to give her a little love. I think the last time I polished her up I replaced the oil pump and got her starting up pretty good cold and told myself well it's a spare if I absolutely need a chainsaw in a pinch. Well its her time again and that's why I'm watching videos to see what up out there in the McCulloch world. Thanks for the video. I see the 610 has a warm spot in your heart also. Strange isn't it?

You have found one of the reasons to keep a Mac 600 series saw, and that it always starts, runs and cuts. I use them for all my major wood cutting for that reason, plus they never wear out and require minimum maintenence or repairs. Every saw can have their quirks, but all my 600 Macs have always been easy starters. I have purchased newer more modern saws over time, but they all wore out rather quickly, and the Macs were waiting in the background to get back to work. So no new saws for me anymore.

@@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 Do you have any info you can pass along on initial carb setting? Thanks
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 2 күн бұрын
Turn both jets from a closed position to 1 full turn out. The saw will run with these settings, but not well. The idle jet usually runs from 3/4 to 1 1/4 turns open. The main jet usually is set 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 turns. Let the saw warm up to do the final adjustments. Adjust idle screw till you get the highest idle speed. Most Mac 600 series saws have a built in governor in the carb on the high speed jet circuit, so with no load the speed will go up and down slightly. To get the final adjustment, the saw needs to be cutting wood. You will need to run the saw in the wood, stop and let it idle, then adjust the main jet slightly richer or leaner till you get the best cutting speed in the wood.

Wait a second... so what you are saying is this thing Burns 50 octane white gas but does not produce carbon monoxide? That pretty much runs contrary to everything I was ever taught. How sure are you about what the actual controversy you mentioned refers to? I mean it must have some basis in reality as you spoke about a heater drum that they make for the thing but like you said, these things are from the 60s... no one gave a shit about that back then, right? Unless they went to, and actually completed Junior High, that is. Well, one thing I won't question is that the American propensity to shrug off dangers and environmental hazards to themselves and others may be the real product review here. Sorry about your wife. No offense intended on the comments here. Good luck... fellow camper.
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 4 күн бұрын
In the past, Coleman said you could use a lantern or stove in an enclosed area as long as there was some ventilation. Today they say the exact opposite. The former is true if using white gas with no additives, not so if using regular gasoline. Gas for cars has lots of additives, which can be harmful if breathing the fumes. I have seen tests where they were operating camp lantern and stoves in enclosed areas, and no noticeable carbon monoxide was present using white gas. It is best to have some ventilation though, as the oxygen can be depleted and there is an odor from burning the fuel. Today's Coleman gas stoves and lanterns are called dual fuel, meaning they can burn gasoline and white gas. Earlier stoves and lanterns were designed for white gas only. Best to always some ventilation. In the cold weather, I use a Coleman catalytic heater in my small shop and use my lanterns in the shop and house when the power is out, and I always have some ventilation. Works fine for me.

I own a Timberbear and love it…don’t get me wrong, I have had to work on it, screw coming loose has been main problem, clean carb occasionally, I recently bought a second off eBay….i hope previous owner did not run it with regular gas…you got me worried about it I guess it will be seized hard to pull??? What is symptoms???
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 6 күн бұрын
The Mac Timber Bears are a great general purpose saw. I have used mine for many years. It is important to tighten all the screws on these saws every once in a while, as they do come loose. The problem with using gas with alcohol in it doesn't affect the mechanical parts of the saw so much, but ruins the fuel lines and carb gaskets and seals. Since I have been using non alcohol fuel in all my power equipment, the amount of fuel system related repairs has dropped dramaticly. I have never had any of my Mac 600 series saws become hard to pull over or seized from sitting, even when they had been using the bad gas before storage.

I don't camp much, but still use my stoves and lanterns quite often for other purposes. Along with using them, I like to collect them and find the history behind them fascinating too, plus they run on gas and kerosene, some of my favorite liquids.

Ryobi chainsaws are made in Hong Kong from what info I could find out. Johnson outboard motor company made small 4 cycle engines called Iron Horse from about 1937. Right before WW-2, they started designing a 2 cycle engine to replace the 4 cycle engine, but was not put into production till right after the war. Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC) which owned Johnson and Evinrude outboard motor companies bought out RPM manufacturing, who made rotary lawn mowers, and who had been purchasing the Iron Horse 2 cycle engine to power them. RPM was renamed Lawn Boy and with the Iron Horse engine being a major selling point.

It would be interesting to try different Stihl saws and do comparisons of them, but I only have 5 Stihls in the collection. My 025 and 031 are close in displacement, and in stock form the 025 was a real turd. The 031 is a nice performer, and once I modded the 025, it works fine. The other 3 Stihls are not close in displacement, so I don't have anything to compare them with. I would recommend watching some of my older videos to see my Stihls in operation, and what I did on the smaller saws to get them to perform well. Thanks for watching and commenting.
