I picked up a Stihl 090 for use in my chainsaw mill. It's quite the upgrade from my 76.5cc Stihl 046. The 090 packs 137cc and weighs 27.5lbs. This large saw is no longer in production. I picked this up from eBay so I go over it, fuel it up, and try it out.

Boy, talk about a walk down memory lane! When I was young on the farm in New-Brunswick we had a few 090s that my dad got from when they built James Bay hydro plants. Great saws; heavy as hell, but when used only for felling, it's O.K. Loved the 025 and 017 for cutting the branches. Keep making these great videos and kudos for having it made on to Wood Talk. Mike

*The Stihl 090 was introduced in 1959 as part of the Stihl Lightning Chainsaw line. I have a 1968 Stihl 08 S that is from that same line and I love this saw. I paid $210 for this saw in junk condition on ebay. After buying all of the parts to get the saw running and all of the cosmetic parts I have $570 in this saw now and I feel that every penny was well spent because this saw looks amazing and runs like a dream. It's a top handle saw around 6 horse power and has enough grunt to pull a 28" bar. You just don't get the same feeling as you do when you're holding one of these vintage stihl saws as you do with a new one.*

Love your new saw Matt, it will run your mill just fine. I ran my Alaskan mill with a 75 Stihl for several years. A friend gave me a 090 and I put a both saws on a 52" bar lots of power still lots of hard work. Lots of loggers out here in Washington saws are common. Have fun with your mill and keep the chips flying.

I've used a stihl ms880 on and off for the last few years and even though it's lighter than the 90 by a few pounds its a beast and an arm breaker to work with. My grand father told me about a 90 he had years ago and this is my first time seeing one. Great vid and I'm going to have to show this to him. He'll get a kick out of it!

Nice buy! I ended up getting all my chains by the link from baileys. I've considered getting an extra foot or two of links for each chain I have to replace individual teeth when broken. I don't have the tools needed to remove/attach new links but there's a lawn/garden repair shop a half mile away that does. That tensioning screw looks like it's going to be a PITA when you have the mill attached!

I think this saw is a pre 1978 model as evidenced by the lack of a chain break. I just got one too. Found my dad's old stihl 048 which is a 1982 model with a 36" bar. I'll have to get one of those Panther mills since I have a couple of red oak logs to deal with. If you ever have trouble starting one give just one squirt of model airplane fuel in the carb. One pull starts! Looks like you got a pretty good deal and it seems to run good. Certainly enough power for your mill.

+Matthew Cremona my 660 has a decompression button, yours looks like a beast to start. are you going to sharpen the chain you have at a 10° angle?
@mcremona
@mcremona 8 жыл бұрын
It is. It takes quite the pull to turn over. That's one of the reasons I'm so happy it starts with only a couple pulls. I would change the angle on the chain that came with it but it's been sharpened many times and after I regrind the teeth there really wouldn't be much left. I'd be lucky to get 3 or 4 sharpenings out of it.

+Matthew Cremona They used to use McCulloch's chainsaw engines and McCulloch actually made the winningest go-kart engines ever made from the late 1950's to the early 1980's. You now officially own THE chainsaw that put Stihl on the map! Up until the 1980's when McCulloch (the man and/or his family) sold the McCulloch chainsaw company to Black & Decker, McCulloch was the #1 chainsaw company in the world. Even the Black & Decker made McCulloch chainsaws were great though, but technology was changing to add anti-vibe mounts, which McCulloch had on their Super Pro series chainsaws, but not on all. Then the McCulloch brand got sold by Black & Decker to the Taiwanese company Cheng Fen and all the good McCulloch's were gone and replaced with what I personally call the "big box store junk" chainsaws. McCulloch got sold (partially) by Cheng Fen to Electrolux in the early 2000's for the European markets' rights like Poulan is here in the USA (think vacuum cleaners! Yes, that Electrolux!). Electrolux bought out the "big 3" Swedish chainsaw companies of Husqvarna, Jonsereds, and Partner-all in that order too. Later on in the 1980's they bought Poulan and then the last chainsaw company was McCulloch (again around 2003).

Also, I'm not sure what the High / Low carby adjustment screws should be at. I have not touched them since I got the saw. Plus the brass joiner to underneath the On/Off switch has become un-soldered, so it is basically not making an electrical connnection to the switch, but I checked the spark plug and the plus is still sparking. It is a brand new spark plug. Do you know waht could be wrong? Maybe it has got reeds inside the cylinder to block off and open up ports? But to me it seems to be not sucking up the fuel, and i've stripped carby, nothing blocking it.

I must ask you, what gaget you are using, that you atach on the chainsaw, when you are milling the tree for the equal thickness of the wood? Does it are custom work, or you can buy it somewhere? I will have some walnut next year and i want to make usable wood of that tree.

If you need a bigger saw I'd suggest using an old Volkswagen Beatle engine, lol.

Hey Matt, I am wondering what chainsaw you would recommend for cutting out bowl blanks for woodturning. Thanks

If power isn't an issue, an electric chainsaw will work well for that. That's what is used to use for cutting blanks. No maintenance and it's quieter.

Hi Matt. Nice find on the 090! I did notice that it appeared the governor was not installed. That engine will last forever if you reinstall the governor and keep the RPMs below 8000. Let me know if you need any info on it.Chris.

Great video I have been wanting a mill for quite some time! But the only thing stopping me is I only have 028 Stihl.

Well if you're not in a rush or are just doing small logs, your saw isn't the thing stopping you ;)

Hey Matt I love your chainsaw milling videos. Very different from the other woodworking you tube content out there, but in a good way. So keep up the great work doing what you do buddy! Anyway I am curious if you have had a chance to do any milling with that monster size 090 yet. If so, did you notice a significant difference in ease of ripping or time to mill up slabs? I have a Stihl MS461 which is pretty much the newer model of the 046 you were previously running so I am just wondering if there is a noticeable difference during milling? Hope to sera video in the future of the 090 in action. Thanks for your time Matt!!
