Stihl 090av vs BIG OAK - Removing Rootball

Had to separate the rootball on a BIG old Oak. Tested out my second Stihl 090AV that I had just finished rebuilding. The bar/chain is 4ft long,.404 .063 full chisel, that's the longest bar I had at the time. The MS660 Magnum I used at the end, was newly rebuilt and I hadn't tried it on wood yet. Didn't get a chance to really test it on this tree. I did not cut the trunk lower to the ground, because I found 3 strands of Barbed wire embedded in the base. Next step... Slab the trunk.

The 660 is an extremely capable saw and I agree, it would have pulled that same chain through the oak without issue. The 090 is the better torque machine by a small margin, so clearly the better choice, but the 660 was plenty strong for that bar.

I just got done cutting up a big oak like that, no thank you ever again. Pain in the ass to cut up into 18" piece, then split it up into sizes you can put in a fireplace. The reason I cut it up was because everybody I called could not handle it, their mills would only go up to 35" and I had over 5' in some areas, so nobody had a mill big enough to cut it up into mantels or some other type of cut to make something out of.But it only takes about 3 or 4, 18" pieces to make a cord of wood.

We had a bad ice storm around here a few years ago. I look after a property with about 10 miles of trails. We had a Hemlock that was about 20inchs in diameter across a trail. It had a trail marker on it so I decided to cut the stump high--about 8 feet to save the trail marker. I cut the tree and like this oak the stump stood back up. I sectioned the stem so we could move it out of the trail. A few years later I was leading a hike in the area. As we walked by the stump one of the ladies looked at the standing stump and asked, "how did you reach that high?"

good saws 090 milled a lot of varieties of wood with one of these the most difficult was nz swamp kauri because the wood was stringy when first extracted like custom wood only wet hard on the gear but worth a fortune because of its age 20,000-40,000 years under ground and estimated 2000 years old before that was like going back in time watching these getting unearthed they were around with the dinosaurs the peat keeped them intacked unbelievable huge the stumps weighed in at 30tons

It probably was, these were known for being like tractors ,the 070 &090 only ran 7000-8000 rpm factory tuned they are long stroke big bore with alot of low and mid torque, saws now days run 12000-13500 average ,high winding little bastards but don't have the ripping torque these had, the clones of these are great for Alaskan saw milling for that reason, if you get one with a clutch that's worth a damn(good luck) they are great.

Good video, and good stats on your bar & chain. You were smart to put cribbing under the log first. When you cut off the rootball of a wind-thrown tree, don't you always expect it to flop back down in it's own hole? So someone needs to make sure the hole is empty. And if you are going to want to get rid of the stump, perhaps fill in the hole first, so all your work is above ground when the rootball flops back. What is the diameter of the log? And of the big rot hole?

It's a matter of preference, but I always start the wedges about one third through. That way the chances of binding from a hidden core split or ring shake part-way through are minimized. Oak is better than fir or cedar for this, but it can still happen. - Nice piece of wood though!
@Chris-Fennimore
@Chris-Fennimore 9 жыл бұрын
rubbishdump09 Thanks, and you are right, that was my plan... 30% in I planned to wedge it. But I could tell it wasn't going to bind. Besides, I got carried away at the ease it was cutting during its first test after the rebuild. :-)

I'm a tree lopper! We put a wedge in the top so the weight of the tree doesn't jam the the saw. then when we get close to the bottom we hit the wedge in which lifts the tree off the ground and we continue cutting. This way the saw blade never touches the ground as touching dirt will blunt your saw!
