Stihl HT131 Pole Pruner Overview

I go over the Stihl HT 131 telescoping pole pruner and put it to some wood to show what it can do. Gopro video didn't turn out at all as you'll see.

That stand is to keep the trigger off the ground during starting. Same as with Stihl weed trimmers, and my trimmer rolls around in the back of the truck, like you said. Great review! I like your style.

OMG! That stand you don't like, is extremely useful! It doubles as a handle when cutting at the extents of it's reach. One hand there and one on the throttle grip, lift it over your head and you can add your height to the 12 ft length. You may want to change that in your video?

yup. exactly. i totally agree. i use that handle every day. without it you can subtract about 2 - 3 feet off your reach, plus it stablizes the unit qhen adding oil and gas. STIHL PLEASE DO NOT LISTEN TO HIM ABOUT "USELESS HANDLE", Its VERY useful.

I borrowed my neighbors today who has this model. One thing is that you need to take breaks. I felt like I did a workout. But it went through anything I needed to cut.

Ok so maybe it's not completely useless buy its definitely not built strong enough with cheap plastic and not wide enough , it should double to stable the saw while it's sitting that way , but I agree with him , it's a bad design that needs help

There's been a couple times I set the trigger at half throttle and use both hands on the power head to get maximum reach lol

i just got one and without the extended extention is about 12” long but when u get the extension out is abut 18” long it work so much work is way much easier

A.C I picked up the ht131 today, got it at ACE for $600 out the door. It’s a little on the heavy side, but the extension makes it worth the extra weight. Going to be raising the umbrella on about 30 pines down the side of a long driveway. A.C do you have any complaints about the ht131?

Which husky did you have? I'm on the fence between the Stihl ht131 and the Husqvarna 525pt5s. Husky is a couple pounds lighter and longer reach. Got nothing against the Stihl. Just want to make the right purchase. Thanks

Stihl discontinued this model but they brought it back recently. Apparently a lot of people were complaining about the new model.

I’m looking at the new 131. The 133 has been discontinued. But apparently the new 131 an 103 have some issues. 131 has a plastic sprocket in the shaft that breaks an gets replaced by the same part an continues to fail. The 103 I forget the specifics but was several complaints in the reviews on STIHL website

I have a 101, and the stand is only good when working on it for most part. Don't cut it off,,, what's the benefits? Really helpful when adjusting or just maintaining engine.

as for the foot hold being, "useless"? I have to disagree. many times I have used it as a hand hold to get max height, its good for that. Its also good for keeping the saw stable while adding gas and bar oil.

I own a Stihl pole saw 27cc and a poulan pro pole saw which is 28cc. The Stihl is more quality of build but the poulan with only a 8" bar (2" less than the stihl) feels like it has alot more high end torque. For only $199 for the poulan pro which has Husqvarna signs on the engine case and the exhaust. So it's a husky just has cheaper externals and switches. Can't beat the deal just wanted everyone to know for a gas pole saw that is reliable fires up on the second pull Everytime. Plus it is light weight and breaks down you can load it in the trunk of a sedan

They will slowly chew through anything the bar will allow. A bit pricey though and expensive to work on buying shaft components. I need several shaft bearings and they aren't cheap. But when its running good, can't beat it.

Can that blade rotate or swivel horizontally 90 degrees so you can do some topping like a long pole hedge trimmer. I do not like climbing ladders and looking for something with a swivel head.

Yep, just loosen the two torx heads that clamp the cutting attachment in place and you can rotate it however you want.

I've got the HT101, it's got 0.5 less HP (but it doesn't have the gay footpad so +1 for the 101 there). It's an awesome tool!

Every inch counts and that silly stand you do not like you are more than welcome to cut it off. Once you treat it as a handle and not a stand you might be pleasantly surprised at the extra length if affords. Arms fully extended barely reaching the trigger with my left hand I can then hold the weight and maneuver the tool gripping the handle / stand. In really sketchy long since dead cottonwoods where no boom truck can access you will appreciate every tapering inch you don't have to climb or rig.

Drive train issue somewhere. Easiest thing to do first is take the cutter attachment head off and see what condition they're in, or if the cutter head got pulled on hard, could have become disconnected altogether. If that's all good, I'd check the clutch.

I have it torn down, you should be able to turn the whole drivetrain mechanism from the sprocket on the head with a flat head screw driver or just by turning the chain. It wouldn't turn, so I took that off and found it's either in the shaft or the engine area. Is it a common issue or just something odd seized up in there?

Haven't worked on a whole bunch of them, I'd check the clutch next, pretty easy to take off the power head and check it. If that's not it, you're on your own, lol. Only took one shaft apart before, promptly took it to the dealer to fix.

OK, It's a good tool. The verbal presentation was awkward and clumsy. Don't tell the minor things you hate. Practice your presentation first. We were not told the short & long lengths of the tool, and the example of how high a 6' operator could reach. The other makers of this sort of saw have been telling these things since the tool came out in the 1990s. And it looked like you WET YOUR CHAPS!!!!
