I grab the 066 flat top because it has a ton of power and it's impossible to damage!

Good review. I have the 066 magnum flat top red light. Only with a 24" bar right now. And that saw screams. Kicks the dust out of my friends Husky. Damn good saws. I have a dual port muffler on mine and modified intake with HD Filter. Its a powerhouse for sure!!

I own quite A few Stihl saws along with lots of other Stihl products. With all the short cuts other manufacturers keep naking And all the junk out there, Stihl keeps making high quality products. I love how they jeep making A very high quality product. Most manufacturers make stuff cheetos save money. Stihl makes stuff quality, durable, And great , that outlast And give then A great reputation because they with no doubt are the best. I own A 066 early 2000 model. 28 And 36 inch bar. It's A beast. A little heavy , But will cut oak And hardly bog A bit. Great saw.

The amount of sawdust carried by the chain back to cutting is greater with the 660 because the tire prevents ejection. Everything should be the same when it comes to comparison.

One other thing to point out, youvhad a good thought sharpening the cahain each time you used a new saw, but you didn't touch the depth gauges or rakers as I call them. Every time you file your cutters you are changing the tooth height lower as compared to the rakers. A true test would show a newly completely sharpened chain every new saw.

Is it possible that both 066's are showing signs of getting tired (lifespan of piston rings getting up there) with their third cuts being slower than their first cuts as they got heated up? While the 660 shows it might still be well within the estimated 15 tank break in period by getting faster on the third? Stihl claims it takes about 15 tanks of fuel before their saws reach full power. I would honestly like to see the same test again, but instead use three identical brand new untouched chains (one for each saw), definitely identical mufflers because of the HUGE difference it makes, and a compression test on each saw. Maybe a cold comp, and then a hot comp immediately after each finishes the third cut. Hell I bet the 660 beats the other two by about 3 seconds with a ported muffler since it was that close with stock. Some say the 066 flat top (no decomp, metal flywheel) is .8hp more than the rest of them. The crankcases are identical, pistons, cylinder (except the oldest no comp version), coils.....everything. I think the older metal flywheel may be heavier than the arctic version, so it would run smoother at higher rpm than lighter flywheel, and hold Rev better through the cut. I'm thinking of swapping my flat top flywheel with my 660 flywheel to see if there is a noticeable difference. I'm assuming that may be the reason for the higher hp with the oldest flat top version.
@militarychevy7118 жыл бұрын
+Jaq Mahogoff Your 1st cut will always be the fastest because the chain is the sharpest. Also you never cut a log the exact same way you did before. But yes, as a saw heats up it will loose some compression...that's normal. Usually if they are tired you'll feel the low compression cold or hot.

a good sharp chain should pull down the motor a bit, and I seen no signs of the saw pulling the saw to the wood, so i'd say use a better made chain, like full skip tooth chisel chain, I've ran saws for years love the stihls there is not a better saw. I've stopped using files on chain just can't get it even nor sharp enough, I have starting using a bench top Oregon chain sharpener so every tooth get sharpened perfectly and that has made a very huge difference. and I've also started buying chain by the box :) wayyyy cheaper

@Verne Dimatteo I agree 100% the problem is i could not make any money working my ass off paying for permits wear and tear taxes gas oil then inflated saw part prices we compete with natural gas coal uranium etc when cutting fire wood and when cutting posts we compete with all other fencing options for me it's a side job I build houses full time and get fire wood and cedar posts to invest and try to get ahead I support America but I'm trying to get above the debt its important for people to be in debt and add debt after all debt is money and it keeps people going to work to pay Thayer mortgages etc and as they work they are making goods or doing services for society that is what gives debt money value. We have the monetary system now and fiate money it is backed by debt look it up we no longer have the gold standard 1933 the gold standard ended so did the great depression we might be headed for another depression only time will tell.
