I work at a company that is a dealer for Stihl. If you have time and keep your eye on the inventory in a store, sometimes they have a unit that has been on the shelf for a year or more like I had a 462 and we have very little walk in business because our main line is heavy equipment , parts and service. Stihl increases prices often and the 462 was in my inventory for almost a year and a half and a guy really liked it so in order to move it I gave him a 2 year old price vs the current price which is quite a bit of savings, you just have to ask if they can do better on price. My cost was low enough so the company still makes a profit and the customer saves about 200 bucks depending on the model. Just thought I'd throw it out there. Great video and good safe saw work 👍

Heads up from a Stihl mechanic. We are having very few problems with the 500, but are seeing problems with chains causing vibration & stalling engines. Your chain grind is to aggressive. This machine has not got the torque of a 661 and has to have a smother chain grind. They have light weight clutch, sprocket and bearings.
@em4703 Жыл бұрын
It can handle the same grind as he uses on his 462 just fine, the torque is between that saw and 661 based on dyno tests. The fact that its ported changes everything for the better too.

@@DMSparky A "Stihl mechanic" isn't really a real mechanic or qualified position, mr "trust-the-fancy-name". You can get that job and follow Stihl guides with zero knowledge just a week of training and ta-da, you're now a Stihl mechanic too. I repair and port saws as a side hobby for 15 years and did hundreds, I'm also a automotive mechanical engineer with a master in material science, if qualifications matter so much to you. I'm pretty sure I know more than you or him about the limits of these small engines as I've tried pretty much anything on them, not just cookie cutter servicing. An "aggressive" grind like Jake uses is a nothing burger, a blunt chain puts more load than any aggressive sharp chain you'll ever be able to produce. That's what the "stihl mechanic" saw, damage by dull chains not aggressive grinds. If a grind is too aggressive you'll know it quick, the saw keeps stalling, a blunt chain won't stall your saw and that's when you'll overheat it

The only real issue i have with the 500i is how the air filter has to be modified so dust doesn't get in, hopefully stilh might have rectified that, and also quite a few loggers have had to modify the spring dampers, as there a bit on the soft side. With the 462 its perfect straight from the shop. Ive got an aussie 500i (i was told they make more power than US versions by a saw builder) i run 98 octane fuel only in mine, i have all Gordys accessories. The barbox and intake stack (i felt) made it into a complete animal even without porting. I recently had a 42' bar on, with a full comp chain (not jking) and cross cut a 40' Aussie iron bark (its like concrete) stump. And it tore through it! A few American guys said it was too big a bar and no way full comp chain. I did it as an experiment. And im telling you i was amazed. Then i saw gordy run a 42' bar on instagram and people were freaking out in the comments. I havent bothered porting it and i never get my 066 out anymore. I run 30:1 and 98octane. I really think the 98 makes a massive difference (plus the exhaust and intake), ive watched so many videos of american ported 500s running 36' bars and guys are blown away and honestly the times are the same or similar to my unported 500. I did notice once i added the accessories that the idle changed a lot, sounded deeper and way more aggressive. Sean griggs (saw builder) reckons they are really restricted stock but if you let them breathe the computer has potential to make BIG power
@josephdignam123 Жыл бұрын
Most importantly the timber in Australia is 20 times harder than most of the US timber…!! I think the 500i can retard and advance the ignition timing depending on the fuel (and fuel/oil mix)… I only mention this because 98RON is in no way more potent than 95 or 91. The RON rating is the fuels resistance to early ignition or “knock”. 98 is specified only by OEMs for high performance, high compression engines that will experience detonation (knock or Pinging) with a lower rated fuel. The 500i - even if the base gasket was deleted, still wouldn’t have enough compression to pre-ignite 91 or 95RON fuels! In fact the Stihl manual states the requirement of 90RON. Point is, there is likely very little factual or 0 measurable benefit in running 98. Most of it is fuel company marketing bullshit and the important science behind it all gets forgotten. I hope I can save you a few dollars in fuel costs

Figured in 40 years I can fix a carb, fuel injection parts may not exist. (I'm running into this with my 30 year old trucks, can find parts but they're junk right out of the box 75% of the time). As much as I'll need it, my kids will be tuning it up when I'm gone. My Dad's Stihl 029 is still going 30 years later, and never an issue.

We've been running the 500i saws for about 2 years almost every day. No problems except the oil leak when stored, and we see that with all of our saws, old and new, regardless of brand. Seems to be a rule with chainsaws. All saws must leak oil if you let them sit for more than a couple hours. It's just the law of the land. Otherwise, the 500 is commonly everything for us in between a top handle and a 880. The other saws have been reduced to pinch recovery and quick sharp tooth when the 500s are dull backups.

I like them and I don’t like them lol. Have three fallers I work with that have switched over to them and they seem to run well. Power to weight is a plus. They all seem to have had to upgrade the clutch cover, the one it comes with seems pretty flimsy. They’re loud as hell with the stock muffler, obnoxious with a bark box. To the point it’s hard to hear your radio unless you have in ear pro coms. If I wasn’t already invested as far as I am in my 372’s, 365’s and 066 I’d likely own one. I like the full warp on the Husky’s over the Stihl’s as well, it’s a lot of little things that keep me from buying a 500i but the seem like a good saw nonetheless.

I hope that the ECHO 620 w/27 inch bar that I ordered ends up being the perfect saw for me...because the 500i was only $500-600 more here. I don't have big trees to work but I want to buck logs without bending and killing my back.
@dp1381 Жыл бұрын
I love my 620. I run a 28” Tsumura bar with full comp chain and it does well in soft woods but I have to baby it in hardwoods with that bar and chain otherwise it will bog down. I’ve kept the saw stock but I hear they do really well with a muffler mod and/or porting. Echos are awesome value for the money as long as you’re not using them 10 hours/day every day.
@smorgdonkey Жыл бұрын
@@dp1381 I got mine mid week and it wasn't fun to start but after it was going...I really enjoyed it. I am not used to that kind of power as I normally run a 45 cc saw. Cutting with it was akin to using a light saber for me the way that it tore through the wood. I used it again today and I didn't fight it as much to start it. The power is so nice, and not having to bend to buck is great. I think I may have to adjust the high jet though as it often stumbles momentarily in the cut...not bogging down but an odd sputter sound then back to normal. I am guessing it needs a bit of a fatter mix on the high. I will probably put off the adjustment a bit to see how it breaks in. Only 1 tank of fuel through it so far.

I personally don't enjoy running it with over a 25in bar.. any bigger I use 661. Fun fact.. it beats an 25in on an 881 in the cut. And if you leave the suspension loose it's as smooth as butter at 25in

Glad to see you cut a leaning tree. I mainly cut storm cleanup around farms which can be really dangerous depending on what has happened. I have had several leaning trees that were partially pushed over by another tree. Needless to say there is quite a bit of unusual loads on these trees as a result of them being tangled and pushing on each other. I have used grade 70 transport chain to wrap trunks of trees to prevent barber chair and also used the plunge / strap type cut to keep the tree from splitting. Never thought of cutting the strap lower than the rest of the cut? Not sure I understand why you did this.....
@jayfrost1178 Жыл бұрын
The reason for the low back cut is to keep the bar from getting grabbed and ripping the saw out of your hands. If you try to match up with your bore cut the tension wood could pop before you are all the way through, leaving your bar caught in a kerf that's going with the tree as it leaves. Cutting below that means that even if it pops early, everything that's leaving is above your bar. Hope that makes sense.
@briananderson1781 Жыл бұрын
Thanks Jay that makes sense.

If it’s older and or a lot of run time it could be warn out. Like excessive scuffing on the cylinder wall… I also had a hard starting saw before, come to find out the crank seals were hardened and not sealing when cold…..once I got it started it ran fine and would start all day long with no issues…..once completely cooled down it wouldn’t start good.

Affordability is a matter of volume. If you are working often, it pays for itself pretty quickly. If you're working less often, maybe a good 362 would be more cost efficient.

I’ve had my 500i for about 1,5 years of full time commercial logging putting over 40+ hours on it a week. One thing that I find incredibly annoying is the chain tensioner which simply isn’t built to last. I find myself replacing it probably every 3 weeks or so because it’s either been bent or the threads have been stripped. If you compare the built quality or even the design of the chain tensioner, the huskyies are by far superior with beefier threads and a more simple and reliable design. Other than that it is a damn nice saw to be fair.
