I like the Inazuma Noh Ken but I honestly cannot say it is a better knife than the Hissatsu folder with the Auto-Lawks feature. But I do like it! I'm a sucker for any James Williams design.

Right on. You know me, I am a Flavio Ikoma Deadbolt Fan. That's the reason why I decided to get one. :-) I need to do a follow up on mine, though... Bad news, it had a badly ground blade and I had to return it to www.WhiteMountsinKnives.com. And, I must say how impressed I am with the way they are handling the return. I bought a Seismic. It was already on clearance sale. I'm not having any problems with the pivot getting loose. I'm thinking of de-assisting my Inazuma No Ken.

Have you seen his penetration points video? He used a Hissatsu folder. He took the knife in a reverse grip and stabbed it on a piece of plywood all the way to the thumb disc. Very impressive.

Thanks for the tip. I used Loc-tite on my pivot. Blue though, not red. I hope this does the trick. I may have tightened it too much because the blade no longer drops when I press the button of the deadbolt lock. At least I can fidget one-handed with it. Among my James Williams knives, this has the best edge. Anyway, I hope it holds. Thanks again for the tip.

Right on! I absolutely luv this blade. But, the pivot comes loose on mine, just like the other assisted models I have with the Deadbolt-Lock. CRKT is coming up with some great designs for their Deadbolt-Lock Folders. But, they need to figure out their Pivots. And, figure out how to make them in a way that they won't come loose so easily... Hello again. I just bought a Clever Girl folder. I've been testing the action. Seems like the pivot screw comes loose after a while. I'll fidget with it again and if still comes loose, I'm going to Loc-Tite it. You're right. The Deadbolt is arguably the safest type of lock especially for a self-defense folding knife. Feels like you're going to destroy the blade first before the lock goes.

Yes, I totally agree. And, yes, Red Loctite the Pivot Screw to the Liner. And then, be sure to let it dry all the way for a couple of days before you use it. Note: I have found that the Deadbolt is not the best choice for Fidgeters. Because, the Pivot will always work itself loose. Especially, in the Assisted Models. Also, the Deadbolt is not the best at self adjustment. So, you might develop slight Up and Down Blade Play, due to the Deadbolt wearing and not self adjusting. The good thing is though, it's stoll a safe Folder. Even when the Deadbolt starts to wear. Enjoy! :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)

I also like flipper tabs. I mean there are a couple of very strong and reliable liner lock knives without flipper tab that I fully trust. Axis locks can also fail sometimes. Also springs do break sometimes.

Had to sub you brother. Im getting mine tomorrow hopefully. I had the otinashi noh ken and I retured it my I loved the design and feel of that long blade theres something to be said about the advantages of reach but I think I can deploy the inszuma alot quicker. Im going to carry mine in the waist band kinda as a backup. Hows it holding up for you? Do you still like it? Oh I just got my Cold Steel Black Bear Classic in the mail today I've been spending the evening reprofiling the edge and polishing it up Its a beautiful blade great quality Ive got to get use to the feel of it. It's an awesome Blade. The only thing that could use improvement is the Pivot. Deadbolt Pivots come loose easily. And, with the Assisted Deadbolts, they still come loose, even when you Red Loctite them. So, you'll need to learn how to keep the Pivot right. I absolutely luv this Model and the M16-04DB. These are great Folders. But, I would like to see Flavio Ikoma redesign the Pivots, so they don't come loose so easily. Oh, and these carry real nicely. I carry mine in my front right pocket. That pocket I only use to carry my Folder. :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)

Keep telling it like it is Stiletto, you know. I used to have the old Hissatsu liner lock with double safety but got rid of it. James Williams always struck me as a sensible dude. Only thing I go back and forth on is his no handle guard policy. However, I also firmly believe that the best real world info about edge weapons and their uses comes from prisons and prison shanks. Those dont have guards either.

Guardless Fixed Blades in Prison are due to the need to make Knives from what's ever available, not really preference... :-) And, they also need to be concealed and hidden from their fellow Convicts and Inmates and Correctional Staff. When they're most often used, it's not in a Knife Fight. But, in a Surprise Knife Attack or Assassination. Myself, I prefer to have hand protection in all grips. Protection from sliding down on the Blade. But, I totally respect James Williams Style or choice of Knife types. The only way I, personally, would use one of his Guardless Knives for Stabbing is with my thumb firmly covering the Pommel or Butt End of the Handle. That is a safe way to use a Guardless Knife for Stabbing. I much prefer a Knife with good Finger and Hand Protection over one without it. But, I respect everyone's styles and preferences. And, I absolutely luv to Collect them all. Note: Throughout the History of Fighting Knives, most Combat Fixed Blade Knives and Swords have had Guards that protect the hands from sliding down onto the Blade or an opposing Blade from hitting your Blade and sliding down on your hand... Prison Shivs and Shanks aren't the ideal, in my opinion; they're just the bare necessities for Convicts and Inmates made from what's ever available in Prison. To me, they're proof that we, as Humans, will always find a way to give ourselves a way to have an advantage over our Enemies in Combat... :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)

True a lot of it probably comes down to constraints and not preference. Still I think a lot can be learned from looking at that environment. Even very crude stabbing implements seeming prove to be very effective.

Absolutely. There's always something to be learned from other's experiences. Always remember, just about any pointed object can be used to stab with. Or, any material like Plastic or Dining Utensils like Forks can easily be made into Weapons and be deadly and lethal if you learn how to strike the Arteries in the Body; it doesn't take much... I agree. A shaperned screw driver is a serious weapon. Even an unsharpened one. Just to touch on a earlier point: for millennia I would say a vast majority of bladed weapons have had hand guards. Its foolish to think there isnt a good reason for this. However I dont think in ancient times people were fighting each other on the battlefield with many 3.5 inch blades either. Just saying. Is a guard absolutely needed on a smaller 3.5 - 4 inch knife? Dont know, not sure. My guess is probably not as long as the user remembers they dont have a guard when using it; and also other features like how grippy is the handle, etc. Still it is something that might bite you in the rear in some cases I think.

On small Folders and Fixed Blades, I would agree that you don't need a conventional Guard or Hilt like you see on big Combat Blades or Swords. But, myself, I still prefer a grip with a very good Finger Groove made into the Handle that would assist in preventing my hand from sliding onto the blade's sharp edge, in a Self-Defense situation. You may not want to use a reverse grip, where you can place your thumb over Pommel or Butt of your Knife. It's very possible you may end up Stabbing in a forward grip in a dire Self-Defense situation. In that case, it would be easy for you to hurt yourself if you slide onto your knife's edge, if there isn'tanything to stop you. If you look at the majority of Knives that I like to carry as Self-Defense Tools, you'll notice they have forward finger grooves or big flappers that aide in protecting you from sliding onto the blade, in a dire situation. Also, I require that they have strong lock types, if they're Folders. And, that if the lock fails, you still have a degree of hand and digit safety. Prison Shanks and Shivs, usually aren't sharp like a Knife you would carry as a Civilian. They usually are only have sharp points for stabbing. In that case, it doesn't matter if your hand slides onto the blade. Myself, I am an ordinary person. With ordinary Knife skills. I haven't been formally trained on any one certain Knife Self-Defense Fighting Discipline or Technique. So, I would use my Self-Defense Tools as best as I can, anyway I can. I don't want to limit myself to using my Tools in one way or discipline or technique. And, I don't want to injure myself with my own Tools. So, I always pay attention to how safe I think a Self-Defense Tool is to use... That's the biggest reason I like Cold Steel Tri-Ad Folders; I believe they are the safest Folders. And, all of the one's I like the most were collaborations between Andrew Demko and Lynn C. Thompson. There are other's I like, too. The Flavio Ikoma Deadbolt, Hogue X5, S.O.G. XR SEAL, Spyderco Manix 2 Ball Bearing Lock and Sliverax and Amalgam Compression-Lock and Power-Lock Folders, and the new Cold Steel Atlas-Lock and the Demko Knives Shark-Lock Folders, just to name a few. But, I would say beware, there are many expensive and famous Knives that are held in high review, as Combat Folders, that I do not feel are safe to use in a dire Self-Defense situation; personal safety is a must, for me and is one of the main things I promote on my Channel. Why? I have been hurt by a very high-end Folder that was claimed to be a great Self-Defense Folder. One real world test that I always do, is to see if a Blade will cut you if the lock fails... To do this, I unlock the Blade and see if it folds in, while your in it's intended grip, and would cut me. To me, that's very important to know. That's why I always like Knives with weaker and unproven lock types to either have nice big forward Finger Choils or big Flippers that protect you if the Blade's lock gives out and the Blade folds in on your digits... Just something to to think about... :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)

Stiletto have you ever had any issues with a deadbolt folder? I had a clever girl and it seemed like maybe a piece of the lock sheared off and it had a lot of blade play that couldn't be fixed

Yes. The pivots come loose. And, if you fidget with them too much, the deadbolt will wear and cause some up and down play. But, it's still a safe Folder. The only way to correct that is to get in contact with CRKT and send it in for repair or replacement. It happened to me with my first Clever Girl. See my original Clever Girl Videos. I constantly played with it and I wore down the deadbolt. The deadbolt is a softer steel than the blade. So, constant forgetting will cause it to wear. I don't recommend Deadbolt Folders for fidgeting. They are Self-Defense Folders. If you want a great Folder that can handle a lot of safe one handed fidgeting, get a Demko AD20.5 Shark-Lock or a CIVIVI Plunge-Lock or a SOG XR-Lock or a Crossbar-Lock (Axis, Able, and Re-Coil-Locks) or a Spyderco Compression-Lock or a Spyderco Ball Bearing-Lock; these are the one's that have been able to handle my constant fidgeting. :-) All of these can handle a lot of fidgeting and are the one's I would recommend for those of us that like to fidget; that's my personal experience with those lock types. Not all lock types can handle a lot of fidgeting... :-) When the Deadbolt wears, it doesn't self-adjust, well. Notice if you push on the Deadbolt, with your fingers, the blade will tighten up and the up and down play will disappear. Personally, I think the issue might be able to be solved with a stronger Deadbolt Spring... :-) Or, CRKT needs to make replacement Deadbolts available to their Deadbolt Customers... My Inazuma Noh Ken's pivot and Deadbolt lock fell apart shortly after I got it. I opened it and closed it around a dozen times and the lock/pivot fell apart. I put it back together but it was very loose. I sent it back to CRKT and they sent me a new one which has functioned perfectly since I received it.

Yes, the screws come loose. You have keep tightening them up. I loctite everything on them and use red loctite on the flat tip pivot screw. That's what works on the manual deadbolt folders. But, for some reason, the red loctite I have won't keep the flat tip pivot screw tight on my assisted deadbolt folders. That's the only issue that I haven't been able to solve on mine. So, I just don't fidget with them and they stay tight longer. I carry my Deadbolt Folders in the same fashion as I do my Tri-Ad Folders; I carry them when I want to carry a super strong and reliable Self-Defense Tool... :-) the only great fidgeter, I have found, with a strong lock type, is the AD20 Series of Folders. :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)

ok here is what I don't understand... when I tighten the pivot screw (on the deadbolt button), it just turns forever and ever. is it actually getting tighter??? or do I have to completely open up the knife to get to something? when i first got the Inazuma, the deadbolt button + spring literally popped out of the knife after a bunch of opening/closing. I sent it back to CRKT and have not had that problem since. however it does have some blade play even though they completely replaced the knife with a new one (I could tell from the grind). no matter how much I torque the pivot screw, it never stops spinning and never seems to really get much tighter.

Did you remove the Button, Spring, and Deadbolt? And then tighten down the Flat Tip Pivot Screw? Remember, only tighten finger tight. The Pivot Screw, screws into the Button Side SS Liner. There isn't a lot of threads to screw into. If you are turning the Screw and it doesn't get tight, maybe it's stripped out. On all Folding Knives, you should never torque down any Screws on them. If you do so, you risk stripping out it out. If you have problems with the Screws coming loose, use Blue or Red Loctite on them. But, never torque them down or over tighten the Screws on any Folding Knife. To get to the Pivot Screw, on the Deadbolt Knives, you must remove the Button Assembly and the Deadbolt. The Screw for the Deadbolt is under the Deadbolt. Deadbolt Folders, especially the Assisted Models, have Pivot Screws that always come loose. So, they require more maintenance. Especially, if you fidget with them. If you have any other questions, I would be happy to help. I have a lot of experience with Deadbolt Folders. And, one thing I've learned, is they are not good Knives for People that like to Fidget or for those that don't like to pull maintenance on their Knives... Why? The Pivot Screw comes loose too easily. :-( Peace, Stiletto :-)

Like you said it sounds like I need to remove the button, which I assume is easy. Is it easy to remove the deadbolt/anything I should know for that? I will try later today probably

Yes, it's easy to do. The parts only fit one way. But, after doing so, just be aware that if you are like me and like to fidget a lot, it will come loose again. That's why I stopped carrying mine, especially, the Assisted one's. Those come loose the fastest. Even when you totally take them apart and Red Loctite the Pivot Screw to the Liner it screws into. I found this to be a flaw in the Deadbolt-Lock design. Also, the Deadbolt-Lock Bar doesn't self adjust as it wears. And, eventually, it will develop up and down Blade Play, due to the Deadbolt wearing down; it's a softer Steel than the blade, so it wears down after a lot of fidgeting. So, these aren't the one's you want to get if you like to Fidget. But, if you don't Fidget with them, they're a super strong lock type that will last a long time. Hmmm... Personally, I like the American Tanto CRKT M16-04DB by Master Sargent Kit Carson and Flavio Ikoma, and Ken Onion. It's just more my style. And, my first CRKT was an M16. So, they have a special place in my personal Knife History. :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)
