$80 Canadian here plus tax and shipping. For a paper map game. Sigh

It looks great. I love the theme. Stilicho is one of my favorite historical figures. Unfortunately, it seems like it’s hard to get a copy :( Hopefully it becomes available in the future

Huh... I wonder how they sold out? I thought Hollandspiele had a print on demand model?
@DoctorGarro3 жыл бұрын
@@burglekutt23 It appears like The Wars of Marcus Aurelius is also sold out, so maybe they changed their model a bit. 2020 maybe?
@BeyondSolitaire3 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure they are just out because they just had their holiday sale.

I believe the cards are printed by another supplier, and Hollandspiele is just waiting for a new delivery after the holiday sale. Maybe check back in early January.

Always wanted to try one of these cardboard square type wargames but I feel like getting someone to play one will be hard, so a solo game sounds great and I like that there's a finite turn limit as well. Seems like it's sold out but it looks like a good intro to the genre. Not 100% sold on the paper board for a game that costs $50 though

It's par for the course in terms of wargames, unfortunately. The publishers that print in China release games with mounted boards, and the ones who usually print in the USA have paper maps. This is a print on demand game, so that's another reason why there's a paper map. Most wargamers have either a plexiglass sheet or a poster frame to place the map into. I admit that it's something I had to get used to when I went to wargames from Eurogames, but oddly enough over time I began to prefer the paper maps, because wargame maps are typically so large (22x34) and the mounted boards were unwieldy and heavy. But a game like this only has a map that's 17x22, so I agree that a mounted board would be nice to have for the price. But as long as the components are produced via laser printer, you're not going to have that. I don't know the rest of the economics, but I know that most of the publishers are small. Hollandspiele itself is just two people. The pricing of the games is an ongoing argument in wargaming circles. Many of us feel that we pay too much money, But we do it anyway because it's a niche subject, and the games from most publishers can be out of print for years. So when one comes up you have to grab it. It's a situation of "it is what it is".

If you can be patient, Hollandspiele’s annual sale in late November is the time to buy. Recently it has been $5 off each game, 10% off $100+, and a freebie micro game if buying 2+ games. The price is undeniably high for the components, but Hollandspiele is a very small operation and some of their games are very, very good. Revolution Games is another small publisher that has some more conventional wargame offerings. Prices are a little lower, especially for their ziploc packaging (instead of boxed), although maps are still paper. I can recommend Battle of the Bulge: Celles; it has a chit draw system that solos very well playing both sides. Unfortunately their annual sale is also in November.

Excellent review. Excellent game. It's a smoother MarcusA. I agree, the strategy is obvious.. You have to crush one tribe fast...but the system isn't about to let you do that. It was fun out of the box.

Welcome to the world of wargames. Game looks beautiful

this game is dope, the problem is its too specific. Only a mega roman history buff would ever play it, which means you will never find someone to play it with and it will rot in your cupboard.
