Folks in small towns and in industries like logging are amongst the hardest working folks you will ever meet. And they HELP each other!!

Leave it to the media to help destroy an industry and then bemoan the fact that these people are poor.

I logged, thinned and planted trees all through that country. Some mighty rough ground to work up above Green Peter Reservoir.

I joined the Navy in 1991 after graduating from Sweet Home High school because you couldn't buy a job in the timber industry. 20 years later, you still couldn't get a job so I moved to the Bakken and work in the oil industry.

As we move forward and evolve our building practices, timber will become less necessary as we will hopefully utilize other materials like hemp. You will still need wood to build the frames but hemp will fill in the rest until they figure out how to make it strong enough to handle the weight of the home. Growing, harvesting, transporting, and manufacturing of hemp can/will employ more people than the logging industry. We can leave more trees to filter the air and provide clean water that we all need. Plus, the animal populations will benefit drastically with more trees making it to "old growth" status, like elk and deer who thrive in that type of environment. We need to accept the future where logging is minimal and we focus on environmentally friendly industries that won't negatively affect us living.

Hemp also filters the air and to make construction lumber out of hemp will take more harmful chemicals to manufacturer the lumber...oh and by the way ...clear cuts provide low laying feed for deer and elk increasing wildlife... people do not recognize the good that comes out of logging but those are beauty scares that heal over and become stronger by harvesting what God intended us to harvest ...not make chemicals and glue

It sucks, but take note that it's a choice between job creation vs destroying your local environment. Even if there weren't any environmental regulations, what are you going to do when all the trees have been cut?

It's a forty year crop rotation. It's like asking what are we going to do when we harvest all the corn? Except in this case the crop is trees. The most environmental savvy people I have ever met are loggers, because that is their livelihood. Loggers replant, manage tree diseases, and make sure that the timber and land remain healthy. Compare that with an environmental activist group that goes out somewhere, pickets for a few days and then leaves all of their discarded garbage (plastic disposable bottles, wrappers, and various other assortments of trash left behind).

Your comment is 8 years old the trees planted 8 years ago are now about 16 feet tall ...in another 30 years those trees will be ready to harvest right on schedule...nope we will never run out of trees
