The Lyman is a good measurer, I gave my old #55 to my brother when I was gifted a vintage RCBS DUO Measurer. The Brass Smith is running around $52 on Midway, but is much more expensive everywhere else I've checked.

Lyman stuff goes on sale there often and I did see $45 a while ago. 🤷♀️👍

I have 3 powder measures but the Lyman is the one I use the most. Very consistent drops with a variety of powders. There are some flake (700x) and extruded powders (IMR4198) that are within a .1gr variance which is to be expected. Ball powders flow like water and are on the money every time. Definitely a good choice for the money.

I bought one for the same price when it came out. They're not cheap anymore though! I sold mine after a few months. I just much prefer my 55 and uniflow measures. My main thinking was that with repeated use the well fitted steel drum would basically grind away that aluminum body casting. Probably not an issue, but there's something about cast iron measures that sets my mind at ease. They all work well regardless of the manufacturer though...even the plastic ones work just fine with certain powders at least.
@unclejim2330 Жыл бұрын
This one hasn’t had any wear at all.
@hercules1073 Жыл бұрын
@@unclejim2330 Yeah I kinda wish I'd kept it after seeing folks long term use videos on it. I love the simplicity of a simple standard drum like the uniflow (my all time favorite measure) I also like the 55 for it's features and massive throw adjustability.

There is a business that sells replacement powder hopper that are made of Pyrex instead of plastic which should by all means stop any static electricity from building up on the powder in the hopper so that powder bridging in the drop down portion should be a thing of the past. Personally I am getting one, as static electricity is a Handloader's nightmare. DRAM WORX - Pyrex Replacement Hoppers.
@unclejim2330Ай бұрын
I just wipe it with a used dryer sheet and never had a problem, but good tip. 👍
@thetexasr.a.t.2059Ай бұрын
@@unclejim2330 Many have had the powder bridge in the drop down tube and cause a squib load in one cartridge and an over charge in the next cartridge, dew to static electricity. Dangerous stuff to say the least if it is not caught. Wiping with drier sheets or washing with dish soap are remedies that do not get to the root of the problem, yet I prefer a cure. So I personally want no plastic on my loading bench what so ever. I also like quality tools that last forever as opposed to cheap stuff that will end up with issues, such as the powder etching the plastic hoppers when left in them. With this Pyrex hopper one can literally leave the powder in the hopper forever and never have any etching happen.

I'm not sure about my brass Smith powder measure yet. I'm still weighing every drop. +/-. 2 or. 3 is terrible. 1 grain separates 5.5 minimum to 6. 5 maximum with trailboss and 44-40. I'd get 6-8 in a row of 5.8gr then 3 or 4 at 5.5, 5.6, 5.7... Then I'd get 6 to 6.1 or 6.2. 80% swing of minimum to Maximum sucks.

Trail boss doesn’t throw good, that is the only problem with that powder. ( Which I use a lot)
